Abstract

This research aimed to determine the correlation between students’ reading interest on short story and students’ translation ability. This is quantitative research using the correlation method. Data were collected from online questionnaires and test. This research uses bivariate correlation analysis as a research design. Respondents in this research were 8th grade students of SMPIT Al-Ibrah of the 2020/2021 academic year in Gresik, East Java, Indonesia. This study found that students’ reading interest on short story had a positive and significant correlation to students’ translation ability with a rxy value of 0.969>0.349 (rtable value) at the level of significance 0.05.

Abstract

High Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) and Autonomy should be an integral part of the teaching and learning process, particularly at the university level to foster students’ critical thinking, creative thinking, and learning autonomy to form a habit as lifelong learners. This is a habit that should be designed not only for assessment purposes, but also for the implementation during classroom teaching process. The purpose of this study is analysed students’ HOTS and learning autonomy for English department students in EFL class to design lesson plan by the implementation of Project Based Learning. Three cognitive domains used as parameters to identify students’ HOTS: analysing, evaluating, and creating, while learning autonomy was portrayed through five aspects as the indicators: determining the objectives, setting the plan, selecting methods and techniques, reflect on learning, and assessing and evaluating the project. This study used mixed method in which three observations were made during the teaching learning process, and questionnaires were distributed to 33 English department students in EFL class. In addition, students were chosen using snowball method and interviewed. Both quantitative and qualitative approach were used to analyse the data. The discovery revealed that indicators and characteristics of HOTS and learning autonomy were presented in a consistent manner during classroom interaction and accomplishing project outside the classroom. Students frequently demonstrate critical and creative thinking in variety of ways when they were participating in the classroom. While learning autonomy portrayed on every stage of accomplishing the project to design lesson plan. The implementation of project-based learning is extremely effective and contribute significantly to foster students’ HOT and autonomy.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine whether there was a significant effect of the picture series technique in writing procedure text in the eighth grade of MTs. M 06 Banyutengah. This study used a quasi experimental design consisting of one class as the treatment class and one class as the control class. The population in this study was the eighth grade of MTs. M 06 Banyutengah, and the samples of this study were students VIII A and VIII B Mts. M 06 Banyutengah school year 2023/2024. The sample was taken using purposive sampling. The instrument of this study was a writing test focusing on procedure text. The researcher collected data by giving a pre-test, giving treatment in the experimental class using the picture series technique with a flipped classroom, and finally giving a post-test. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics and normality test. To test the hypothesis, the researcher used paired sample t-test, which was calculated through SPSS 25.0. The results of this study showed that the mean score the students' mean score raises in class experiment 23.66 points, from 43.00 (pre-test experiment class) to 66.66 (post-test experiment class), while the students' mean score raises in class control 16,83 points, from 42.83 (pre-test control class) to 59.66 (post-test control class). In addition, the Sig (2 tailed) value was 0.000. This means that the probability value (Sig) is lower than α (p-value < α or 0.000).

Abstract

Online learning has great potential to provide students with meaningful learning experience. The use of online learning provided by university has a good impact for students in learning process. In University of Muhammadiyah Gresik, online learning has been applied as one of the teaching method. The university has its own online learning platform “SPADA UMG”. This research focused on analyzing the students’ perspective on SPADA UMG online learning platform. This research applied qualitative research design and used questionnaire and interview techniques. The result showed that the students’ responses on their perspective of SPADA UMG online learning varied into 4 indicators. They were; (1) learning needs; SPADA UMG helped students achieving their learning needs but also gave them difficulty to understand the material, (2) efficiency; taking course via SPADA UMG provided the students efficient condition to study anywhere and granted them additional time, (3) features; despite its imperfect features, SPADA UMG was easy for students to operate, and (4) access; students often got problem accessing SPADA UMG because of the server down or the internet connection. SPADA UMG also provided advantages such as its efficiency that granted students an efficient learning experience and convenience operating system. On the other hand, SPADA UMG also provided disadvantages such as problems to access the site and some error features
