Abstract

The purpose of this research was to study tree cutting of mangrove forest by the local people of Batu Ampar and the pulp industry at Kapuas river estuary. At each site the rapid measurement methods were established using quadrate plots of 20m x 20m and 5m x 5m, each with 2 replicates. The results revealed that the local people only cut the selective trees of Rhizophora apiculata and Bruguiera gymnorhiza with diameter of 20-25 cm2 at 0.25 ha wide, which created gap canopy as small disturbace to the mangrove forest. This area of gap canopy immediately was colonized and dominated by R. apiculata. The mangrove tree cuttings created the phase gap generations. This forest recovered quickly, thus the small distrurbance maintained the mangrove tree species diversity. The Rhizophora roots were habitat for nusery grown of larval shrimps, crabs, and fishes. The pulp industry cut all of the mangrove species wich created big disturbance and huge gap area. The forest also recovered quickly, but was dominated by Xylocarpus granatum. Thus, the big disturbance by the pulp industry caused the shifted species of the mangrove forest species from Rhizophora and Bruguiera to Xylocarpus. The roots of Xylocarpus tree were not habitat forthelarval shrimps, crabs, and fishes, which decreased the fisherman catch. The forest rehabilitation of industrial cutting was planted regularly with Rhizophora, and created many current canals which proned to the erosion. Thus the pulp industry of mangrove forest cutting threatened nursery habitat and species diversity at the mangrove forest of Batu Ampar.

Abstract

During the 1996 to 1997, large areas of mangrove forest in the Segara Anakan were cleared and converted into intensive shrimp-ponds. After one to two years, these shrimp-ponds failed and were abandoned. These abandoned ponds created large gap areas and canopy gaps, which were colonized by mangrove shrub and liana. The Segara Anakan mangrove also experienced heavy siltation, and there were tree cuttings from the remnant of the mangrove trees. This research aimed to study the colonization of mangrove vegetation at the abandoned-shrimp pond. Vegetation data were collected using rectangular plots of 25 m x 25 m with 4 replicates. The water qualities were also studied. The results revealed that the mangrove forests were composed of two layers: canopy tree and floor-vegetation. The gap areas triggered the pioneer species of mangrove shrubs and liana, Acanthus ilicifolius and Derris heterophylla, to colonize and dominate 100% of the mangrove forest floor. The mangrove trees consisted of natural and planted tree species. The natural trees were Sonneratia alba, Avicennia alba, and saplings of Aegiceras corniculatum, which  varied between 56 – 136, 4, and 4 individuals per ha, respectively. The planted trees were Rhizophora apiculata, which amounted to 4 – 12 individuals per ha, at the island of the ponds. These trees and saplings were entangled by the liana mangrove, which disturbed their growth. The A. ilicifolius and D. heterophylla prevented the mangrove tree propagules to grow, and they colonized and characterized those abandoned shrimp-ponds, which threatened the Segara Anakan mangrove ecosystem.

Abstract

Jalak Bali (Leucopsar rothschildi) sejak tahun 1966 dimasukan oleh International Union forConservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species dan Convention on International Trade inEndangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Jalak Bali dikelompokan sebagai satwa terancampunah dengan kategori kritis (Critically Endangered) dan di Indonesia telah dilindungi sejak tahun 1970.Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui perilaku Jalak Bali di Taman Nasional Bali Barat danPulau Nusa Penida untuk konservasi burung tersebut. Metode yang digunakan adalah scan samplingdengan instataneous sampling. Perilaku Jalak Bali di Taman Nasional Bali Barat terdiri dari terbang17%, makan buah 3%, makan serangga 1%, menelisik bulu 15%, menegakkan jambul 6%, bobbing 7%,berkicau 40%, minum 0,5%, dan berjalan 10%. Sementara di Nusa Penida pada musim hujan terdiriterbang 13%, makan buah 19%, makan serangga 4%, menelisik bulu 7%, menegakkan jambul 7%, bobbing8%, berkicau 11%, minum 1%, 1% mandi, berjalan 16% , bersarang 2%, mengeram 9% dan mengasuh anak3%, dan di Nusa Penida pada musim kemarau terdiri terbang 11%, makan buah 9%, makan serangga21%, menelisik bulu 7%, menegakkan jambul 6%, bobbing 7%, berkicau 9%, minum 2%, mandi 1%, berjalan18% , dan bersarang 8%. Jalak Bali berkembang biak di Nusa Penida pada musim hujan dan musimkemarau, tetapi di Taman Nasional Bali Barat pada musim hujan.
