Abstract

Listening has an important role in communication which is applied in foreign language classroom and it is considered as necessary skill because it has an essential role in facilitating learners to master English proficiency. The aims of this research were to find out the extent to which videocast improves listening comprehension of the fourth semester students of Makassar Islamic University and the students’ perceptions toward the utilization of videocast in teaching and learning activities. This research was carried out in the fourth semester students of English Department of Makassar Islamic University. The method used was quasi-experimental design with pre-test, eight meetings of treatment, and post-test. The data were collected using two kinds of research instruments: listening test and questionnaire. The data were then analyzed by means of statistical analysis through the independent sample t-test and the frequency of questionnaire. The result showed that the independent t-test which compared the students’ score on post-test revealed a value of p<0.05. It means there is a significant difference between listening comprehension of the students who were taught by utilizing videocast and the students who were not taught by utilizing videocast. Furthermore, the analysis of questionnaire indicated that the students’ perceptions toward the utilization of videocast were very positive. It can be concluded that utilizing videocast improves significantly students’ listening comprehension.

Abstract

Abstract:Technological advances and the COVID-19 have accelerated the shift from traditional learning to online learning. Educational institutions have no choice but to convert the classroom setting into online classes. When teaching online, EFL teachers may have encountered challenges. This paper aims to review some previous studies on the teachers’ perceptions of the challenges in online EFL teaching, in Indonesia and other countries. This study employs library research. The result shows that challenges occurred during the implementation of online EFL teaching and learning. In other countries such as Korea, Thailand, Iran, China, and Saudi Arabia, the challenges are mostly related to the students’ learning process including the time and class management. On the other hand, in Indonesia, the challenges are more complex. Lack of experience with the online teaching methods and the limitations regarding the adequate internet facilities become the challenges that are most complained by the teachers.Abstrak:Kemajuan teknologi dan COVID-19 telah mempercepat peralihan dari pembelajaran tradisional ke pembelajaran online. Institusi pendidikan tidak punya pilihan selain mengubah pengaturan kelas menjadi kelas online. Saat mengajar online, guru EFL mungkin menghadapi tantangan. Makalah ini bertujuan untuk meninjau beberapa penelitian sebelumnya tentang persepsi guru tentang tantangan dalam pengajaran EFL online, di Indonesia dan negara lain. Penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian kepustakaan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tantangan terjadi selama pelaksanaan pembelajaran EFL online. Di negara-negara lain seperti Korea, Thailand, Iran, Cina, dan Arab Saudi, tantangannya lebih banyak terkait dengan proses belajar siswa termasuk waktu dan manajemen kelas. Di sisi lain, di Indonesia, tantangannya lebih kompleks. Kurangnya pengalaman dengan metode pengajaran online dan keterbatasan fasilitas internet yang memadai menjadi tantangan yang paling dikeluhkan oleh para guru.

Abstract

The development of the era can be inextricably linked to the development of technology as it has entered all aspects of human life, including education. One of the technology utilization in education is e-learning which allows the learning process can be accessed anytime and anywhere. One technique commonly used in asynchronous learning nowadays is online discussion. This research aims at investigating the level of students’ interest and the factors that affect their interest in the implementation of the online discussion techniques. This research was conducted by mix-method, where the data was collected from the questionnaire and interview. The subjects of this research were 40 students in the questionnaire section and 4 students in the interview section. The result of the interview proved that students had a high interest in the implementation of online discussion techniques; while, the result of the interview indicated some factors that affect students’ interest in the implementation of online discussion techniques such as teacher activeness and involvement, internet connection, students’ motivation and concentration. Hopefully, this research can help to maximize the application of online discussion techniques to gain more benefits in the learning process.

Abstract

This study focused on the use of lexical collocations in transactional speaking skills of final year students majoring in English. This study aimed to determine the students ability in using lexical collocation and identifiy its type in their transactional speaking. The study conducted in Alauddin State Islamic University of Makassar. The subject of this study were the final year students of English Education Department. These students can be categorized as the intermediate learners of English because they took speaking lectures one to three. It was important for their collocational knowledge to be native-like. This study used a qualitative method. Researcher used interview as the data collection tool. Then, the researcher analysed the transcript of the interview. In analysing, researcher determined the collocation words and the types too, used Oxford online collocation dictionary to check whether the collocation were true or not. The findings showed that the students used English lexical collocations in their transactional speaking. Researcher found 179 English lexical collocations are used by the students. 81 of those collocations are correct. Researcher also found that they used four types from total 6 types (based on Benson&Ilson) of English lexical collocation which they tend to use the type 1 than the other types. The study therefore suggested that the teacher and students should more concerned about the collocational knowledge in this case lexical collocation.

Abstract

The students’ mastery in pronouncing English words depends not only on students themselves but also on the teacher as a facilitator. Therefore, it is very important for the students to practice their pronunciation using their ability to imitate their teachers’ pronunciation. Yet, it cannot be dismembered that students’ imitating ability is the only matter that can drag the students’ feet in learning pronunciation. As reaction for the issues, the researcher considered a technique that allowed the students to enjoy studying pronunciation and increase their ability in pronouncing English words immediately. In this case, the researcher desired to know the students’ perception in teaching pronunciation by using Imitation Technique. By knowing students' perceptions, it allowed the researcher and teachers to know more about the students and how their opinion is in terms of learning pronunciation. The objective of this research was to find out the students’ perception toward the use of Imitation Technique in learning pronunciation at the second grade of SMAIT Al-Ishlah Maros. This study used descriptive quantitative research design in analyzing data. The total number of populations was 68 students that consist of three classes. Therefore, the sample was 21 students that chosen by random sampling technique. The result of this study was found that the students’ showed positive perception on Imitation Technique in learning pronunciation according to the data analysis. It shows that the mean score of the students’ perception on the use of Imitation Technique in their English learning was 80.81 which classified as Positive.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the students’ vocabulary mastery at second- grade students’ of SMPN 1 MAJENE, and to know students' perception on the use of puzzle in teaching vocabulary mastery. Data collection was carried out in December 2020 from 17 students of class VIII SMPN 1 Majene. This research used qualitative research, and the instruments were vocabulary test and interview. This research showed that the mean score of the vocabulary test was78 (Good) which means the students had sufficiently mastered vocabulary and could understand the vocabulary itself. The result of the interview indicated that most of the students gave positive perception on the use of puzzle, they stated that the puzzle was very good because it could increase vocabulary mastery train memory of the students, they also prefer group study because learning becomes more fun and interesting and they can ask each other what they don't know. The use of Puzzles can also increase students’ word writing, and play an active role in learning. In other words, puzzles are very helpful in learning English and make it easier for students to learn English.

Abstract

This paper aimed at investigating the needs of occupational English for Purchasing Department in PT. Bosowa Lloyd, Makassar. The subject of this research was 12 employees working in Purchasing Department consisting 6 males and 8 females, including one head which is called Purchasing Manager. The data were collected through a questionnaire, interview, and observation. The findings of this research indicates that Purchasing Department are required to have high levels of English proficiency. In order to prepare language program, the information of PSA becomes the starting point to design course and instruction material for the students. To identify TSA, the needs analysis for employee of Purchasing Department was performed through analyzing the responsibilities which were taken from company manual. Moreover, to meet the demands, communicative functioning (which covers discourse communities, business genre, key communication events and function, grammar and lexis), specific expectation of the students and the role of cross-cultural communication are also important to explore.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the extent to which the significant correlation between emotional quotient and speaking ability on the second year students in the major of English Education Department. This research used multi-stage cluster sampling to gather data on 30 students from the total population of 101 students. The researchers used quantitative approach with correlation research design to reach the research objective. There were two instruments distributed to students namely USMEQ-i questionnaire for measuring students’ emotional quotient and Speaking Test for assessing students’ speaking ability. The findings showed that the score of students’ emotional quotient (2.85) was high emotional quotient by using USMEQ-i questionnaire and the score of students’ speaking ability (70.83) was fairly good speaking by using Speaking Test. Furthermore, the coefficient correlation (rxy) was 0.886. It indicated that the correlation was in high correlation. Based on the data above, the researchers conclude that the alternative hypothesis was accepted and null hypothesis was rejected. It means that there is a significant correlation between emotional quotient and speaking ability on second year students in the major of English Education Department. The researchers mention a suggestion to the teacher that emotional quotient should get serious attention to control, motivate, and regulate students’ emotional quotient. If students are able to control their emotions, they will get good grade in speaking activity. In addition, for the next researchers, they have to collect many new sources for analyzing and evaluating this study.

Abstract

This research was an experimental research. This research aimed to find out the improvement of students’ speaking skills with a research objective; to find out the improvement of Students’ Speaking Skills by using visual aids in the Second Year Students of the English Education Department State Islamic University of Alauddin Makassar. The visual aids that the researcher used in this research were pictures and videos. This research was conducted at English Education Department State Islamic University of Alauddin Makassar the second-year students. In this research, the population was 101 students in the second year of EED. The sample was 50 students. There were 25 students in EED A as an experimental group and 25 students in EED B as a control group. The instrument that the researcher used in this research to collect data were speaking tests. The data were analyzed quantitatively using SPSS 23.0 version. The findings of the research showed that the use of visual aids was able to improve students’ speaking skill in the Second Year Students of English Education Department State Islamic University of Alauddin Makassar.

Abstract

Nowadays, there are a lot of online learning platforms. New technologies developed to make learning process easier. One of the examples of online learning platforms is VOA (Voice of American) News. The research aimed to measure the effect of VOA News toward the students’ transactional speaking at Gandra Islamic School Soppeng. This research employed an experiment exactly quasi-experimental research, where the data obtained from the pre-test and post-test. The subjects of this research were 31 students which divided into two groups such as control group which consist of 15 students and experiment group which consist of 15 students at Ganra Islamic School Soppeng. The data was analyzed by using SPSS and found that the H1 was accepted. It proved that the implementation of VOA News improved students’ speaking skill because there was an improvement score from the pre-test to post-test. Based on the finding and discussion of the research, the researcher proposed to provided recommendation especially for an English teacher of Ganra Islamic School Soppeng to imply VOA News as a technique to improve students’ speaking skill.
