Abstract

The aims of this study are twofold. Firstly, it aims to explore English Education Department, STAI Miftahul Ulum Tanjungpinang students’ ability in writing opinion column piece. Secondly, it aims to investigate the problems faced by students when writing opinion column piece. A total of 10 students participated in this study. The research took place in January 2020. We used a test and a semi-structured interview to collect the data. The data were further analyzed using content analysis where the researcher scrutinized students’ works after they were given the task of completing an opinion column piece writing. In order to classify students’ ability, we adopted five indicators of writing opinion piece, namely: focus, ethos, pathos, logos and research and writing fluency. The study lead to the general findings that from the total of ten students, seven students fell under the category of average, three students fell under the category of good. Furthermore, most students expressed that generating ideas are difficult. The problems students faced and their detailed score are further elaborated on the paper.

Abstract

This study aims to describe translation error patterns from Indonesian into English found in the Wonderful Kepri Tourism Guide book. The data in this research are the erronously translated words, phrases and clauses. The samples of the data were collected from several pages in the book. Types of errors are classified into syntactic errors including usage, punctuation, grammar, and syntax. Semantic errors include spelling, tenses, addition or omission of word elements, terminology or diction and free translation. With reference to the findings of this study, the researcher provides a more accurate translation in accordance with the Language of Tourism (LoT) specification and in accordance with the original text so that the message delivered reaches the target audience. The findings are expected to serve as a reference for Provincial Tourism Office of Kepulauan Riau to translate tourist guide books accurately and carefully in the hope that the number of tourism visits especially English-speaking tourists increases in the following years ahead.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate students’ errors in determining past regular and irregular verbs. The formulation of the problem in this research are: 1. How is students’ ability in using past regular and irregular verb form? 2. Which past verb form is mostly misused? This research is about analyzing students’ errors at second grade of SMP Negeri 1 Bintan. The population of this research were 245 students. The researcher only took 32 students as the subject of the research. There is 1 test instrument used to collect the data. The researcher distributed the test in the form of daily conversation. To analyze the data, researcher classified the students’ errors into excellent, good, fair, and poor. After analyzing the data, it was discovered that the mean score of students’ ability is 75 which means that students’ ability in determining past regular and irregular verb belongs to good category. While, the mostly misused past verb form is irregular verb. This is because irregular verb differs from the regular tense form. It is suggested that students should memorize about the past irregular verb and should know the formula in the regular verb.

Abstract

Abstract This research was aimed to find out: (1) Types of linguistic errors that students of the English education department of Miftahul ‘Ulum Tanjungpinang commit in writing a thesis, especially in the background section. (2) The most and least dominant linguistic errors were found based on Dulay’s surface strategy taxonomy theory in students of English education department of Miftahul ‘Ulum Tanjungpinang thesis, especially in the background section. This research used a mixed-method (qualitative and quantitative. The qualitative method was used to describe 4 types of linguistic errors based on Dulay’s theory such as addition, omission, misformation, and misordering. While the quantitative method was used to calculate the data include the 4 types of linguistic errors. The data collected in this research were analyzed by using Dulay’s theory and percentage formula. There were 110 students’ theses which were the populations of the data and 10 of them were the samples. The result of the research revealed that there are 128 sentences were contained linguistic errors. The 128 sentences were classified based on 4 types with each presentation. They are addition (11%), omission (30%), misformation (59%), and misordering (1%). Based on the result it can be concluded that misformation was the highest percentage of types of linguistics errors were found in students’ thesis background. Where such errors included subject-verb agreement (31 errors), spelling (18 errors), preposition (14 errors), pronoun (5 errors), capitalization (4 errors), and article (3 errors). Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out the correlation between students’ metacognitive strategy and their self-efficacy in speaking skills at the third grade of language major of MAN Tanjungpinang. The subject of this research was all of the students of the third grade of language major of MAN Tanjungpinang. The object of the research is students in the third grade of language major of MAN Tanjungpinang. The population of this research was 197 students of the third grade in MAN Tanjungpinang with 19 of the students being used as samples of the research. To collect the data, the researcher used observation and questionnaires. To analyze the data the researcher used descriptive statistics with a Pearson Product Moment and tested of the significance of the correlation coefficient. The result indicated that the value of the correlation coefficient (r) is 0.425, with level of correlation is moderate because it is in the coefficient interval between 0.40 - 0.599, while the value of tcomputed is greater than the value ttable (1,935>1,734) and the significance value is 0,035, which is 0,035<0,05 (1-tailed). H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. It means that there is a significant correlation between students’ metacognitive strategy and their self-efficacy in speaking at the third grade of language major of MAN Tanjungpinang at 0,05 level (1-tailed).
