Abstract

To investigate wriggles of Qur’anic studies at Germany in the end of 20th Century, one should examine works of its influential figure, such as Rudi Paret who was broadly considered as the most intelligent student of Enno Littman, a veteran German orientalist. This article describes and discusses the contribution of Paret’s works along with its methodological strength and fragility based on reviews written by their observers. The results of the passage will be used to map Paret thought, both about Islam and the Qur’an. It is concluded that: first, Paret’s research on the Qur’an contributes a lot to the development of the Qur’anic interpretation methodology; and second, Der Koran: Kommentar und Konkordanz is a work of interpretation based on the translation methodology, in which the text of the Qur’an is understood and explained by something parallel. This method resulted in a ‘concordance’, Paret’s concrete offer to stand against the chronological reading of the Qur’an that developed rapidly in his days.

Abstract

The Perspective of al-Syafi’I on Partnership in Marriage In husband and wife relationships, contemporary couples prefer a partnership pattern rather than one of  leadership. Although the latter is not necessary better than the former, it is obviously more accommodative of modern ideas of justice, egalitarianism and gender equality.  This article aims to explore the connections between household partnership patterns, as fundamental to contemporary Muslim’s, and the traditional Islamic jurisprudence (fikih) most dominant among the diverse adherents of Islam.   More specifically, this research describes al-Syafi`í thought. To explore the partnership patterns of married couples, it elaborates on three points: (1) the meaning of qawwamuna, (2) the concept of bride price and household expenses, and (3) interactions between husband and wife. The primary resource use in this research is al-Umm. This article concludes that Syafi’i jurisprudence implicitly accommodates the idea of partnership between marriage partners, as evident in (1) the acknowledgement of a woman’s right to choose her husband; (2) the bride price, which has both legal, formal and moral implications; (3) the co-understanding of the marriage partners in matters of household expenses and the emphasizing of discussion in solving financial problems; and (4) the use of good reason in dealing with household and personal conflicts.

Abstract

Through his Structure of Revolution, Thomas Kühn contributed a big movement, not only in the philosophy of science, but also in social as well as natural and religious sciences. This article is written to elaborate the epistemological aspects of Kühn’s philosophy from for keywords: paradigm, objectivity of science, scientific community and revolution of sciences. This research concludes that Kühn, responding Auguste Comte’s positivism and Popper’s Falsificasionarism, compelled a revolutionary development of science despite the linear-accumulative one. For him, knowledge is never objective (value-neutral) for its being from a particular consensus in a particular paradigm. Therefore, scientific method has to appropriate with the cycle of scientific revolution (normal science – anomalies – crisis - extraordinary science – revolution - normal science 2, etc.) In Kühn’s, truth does not depend totally on any method used to test it. It depends on acknowledgement of some subjectivities in a knowledge. Although sciences, for him, are not comparable, science in the last paradigm is more consistent, accurate, and useful. Kühn’s philosophy is relevant with current issues on Islamic studies, namely paradigm shifting of Islamic epistemology, membership of religious scholars community and paradigm of Islam’s Jumhur.

Abstract

This article deals with two scholarly tafsīr books circulating throughout modern Indonesia: Husein Qadri’s (1906-1966) “Senjata Mukmin” (The Weapons of the Believers) and Agus Purwanto’s (b. 1964) “Nalar Ayat-Ayat Semesta” (Reasoning of the Verses of the Universe). Qadri, representing his position as Muslim scholar, and Purwanto, as Muslim intellectual, contribute to the shaping of lay exegesis in their country. I conclude that although the two works are completely different with regard to genre, methodology and style, both are concerned with attracting the attention of lay readers and, accordingly, endeavor to present their information in a comprehensible and accessible manner. In term of content, the two books limit their discussion to the apparent (ẓāhir) meaning of the Qur’an, an understanding that depends on a reader’s knowledge of Arabic; one might call it an immediate understanding of the text. Their works also maintain the primacy of Arabic over the Indonesian language.
Challenging al-Dhahabi's (1915-1977) Authority in the Historiography of Tafsir: A Clarification of His Salafī Outlook Qadafy, Mu'ammar Zayn

Abstract

Recent discussions of modern historiographies of tafsīr show that al-Dhahabī’s al-Tafsīr wa al-Mufassirūn used the radical hermeneutic of Ibn Taymiyyah (d. 728/1328) as a philosophical underpinning, leading his book to present a somewhat salafī-history of the genre. This approach affirmed that the Qurʾān was repositioned squarely where the hermeneutical tools were unequivocally restricted to a hadith-inherited mode. A more holistic study on al-Dhahabī‘s scholarship, however, has yet to be undertaken. This article seeks to complete (and to some extent clarify) the image of al-Dhahabī's salafī leanings by situating his scholarship in the battlefield of ideas in Egypt from the 1940s to 1970s and undertaking a close reading of his other major books of tafsīr, including (1) al-Waḥy wa al-Qurʾān al-Karīm, (2) al-Isrāʾīlīyat fī al-Tafsīr wa al-Ḥadīth, (3) al-Ittijāhāt al-Munḥarifah fī al-Tafsīr, (4) al-Tafsīr wa al-Mufassirūn, and (5) Tafsīr Ibn ʿArabī. This article outlines Dhahabī’s systematic approach to the historiography of tafsīr. While his first three books provide theoretical considerations of what constitutes a good Qurʾānic commentary, the remaining two works are where he applies these theories into concrete judgements and classifications of tafsīr works. Besides the fact that Dhahabī has revitalized the problematic division of Tafsīr bi al-Maʾthūr and Bi al-Ra’y, several new key arguments highlighting his salafī outlook are identified throughout his books, namely his reinforcement of the value of the isnād system and his blatant attacks on commentaries that are not based on inherited interpretive materials. By shedding light on Dhahabī’s salafī orientation, this article argues for the need for alternative sources of the historiography of tafsīr to be studied in Indonesian Islamic Universities.
