Abstract

This article outlines several main ideas underlying Walid Saleh's works from 2004 to the present, including the genealogical nature of tafsir materials and the dichotomy of medieval tafsir books into encyclopaedic and Madrasa categories. The article reveals the grand goal of Saleh's scholarship, which is redirecting the intellectual history of tafsir that has been - according to him - covered by an intellectual movement that adores Ibn Taymiyyah and his radical hermeneutic. By evaluating Saleh's articles and books, this article concludes that his ideas are very relevant to be studied in the PTAI curricula, especially developing the major of Qur'an and Tafsir sciences, so that the study of medieval tafsir finds its way back to the Indonesian academic context after being neglected for a period of time.

Abstract

AbstractThe Ta’lim al-Muta’allim book is one of the yellow books taught in Islamic Boarding Schools. Among the IBS, there are still many teachers/ustadz who deem that this book as a good conduct book containing the formulation of standard and final ethics. Meanwhile, a yellow book should be understood contextually, by taking notes the historical, social and politics backgrounds. A yellow book along with all of its contents is not an absolute truth, but also reflecting the culture, requirements and public opinion in its place and era. This paper attempts to see how is the concept ta’dhimu syuyukh in the book positioned correctly, and should the contents of that book be undertsood in this modern era.

Abstract

This article deals with two scholarly tafsīr books circulating throughout modern Indonesia: Husein Qadri’s (1906-1966) “Senjata Mukmin” (The Weapons of the Believers) and Agus Purwanto’s (b. 1964) “Nalar Ayat-Ayat Semesta” (Reasoning of the Verses of the Universe). Qadri, representing his position as Muslim scholar, and Purwanto, as Muslim intellectual, contribute to the shaping of lay exegesis in their country. I conclude that although the two works are completely different with regard to genre, methodology and style, both are concerned with attracting the attention of lay readers and, accordingly, endeavor to present their information in a comprehensible and accessible manner. In term of content, the two books limit their discussion to the apparent (ẓāhir) meaning of the Qur’an, an understanding that depends on a reader’s knowledge of Arabic; one might call it an immediate understanding of the text. Their works also maintain the primacy of Arabic over the Indonesian language.
