Gili Trawangan is known as one of the tourists popular place to visit that is located in Lombok island where Sasak tribe origin from. Sasak tribes has distinctive buildings with certain characteristics. Aston Sunset Beach Resort is one of the resorts that provides and shows the nuances of traditional Sasak architecture, that the shape of the structure has caught the intention of the tourists who visit the resort. In order to find out how deep the Sasak architecture is applied to the resort building, it is necessary to conduct a research, with the aim of what parts are implemented and how the Sasak architecture implementation is in each room unit of building architecture at Aston Sunset Beach Resort. The method used in this study is a qualitative deductive method with a rationalistic paradigm, the data in this study were obtained based on literature studies and direct field observations, and the analysis was carried out by comparing the resort architecture data and the Sasak architectural study using predetermined parameters to find equations as well as the difference between the two, if a difference is found, it will be seen how far the difference is transformed or vice versa, which is significantly different from the character of Sasak architecture. The results of this research found that the implementation of Sasak architecture in several resort buildings is in various forms but does not necessarily apply to all of the constructions but the buildings still have the same characteristics

Abstract

Pekanbaru City is the capital of Riau Province which has a majority of the population of Malay ethnicity. In maintaining its cultural characteristics, in the city of Pekanbaru there are many contemporary buildings that have the implementation of Malay characteristics on the facades of the buildings, which one is the object of this research, government offices in Tenayan Raya and Balai Payung Sekaki buildings, because the culture in an area is not only can be seen on thel Traditional House building, but other buildings must also be able to reflect regional characteristics such as a regional government office building which is one of the markers of an area. However, the application of Malay architecture must be done as well as possible so that there is no mistake because it can change the meaning contained in each characteristic feature of Malay architecture, meybe on roof components, ornaments or others. Misunderstanding or ignorance of a role in building also has a fatal impact on these formations. Although in plain view, these forms seem beautiful to feel, but philosophically and the meaning can be wrong. This research will be conducted with a descriptive approach to interpret an existing condition with a related theoretical basis to see the implementation of Malay architecture on the facades of contemporary buildings in Pekanbaru City. The entire implementation of Malay in buildings in the Tenayan Office area can be categorized as quite good in terms of authenticity because all the roofs and ornamental designs have the same motifs as the original motifs in traditional Malay buildings. The technique of applying ornament to the object of this research also varies, some are done by means of Stilation, Distortion or Repetition. However, he could not find any ornamental motifs that were applied using Decoration techniques.

Abstract

Abstract

Informal learning spaces (ILS) are increasingly important in supporting student learning. However, their availability and quality on campus remain limited and are still evolving. This condition encourages students to use public spaces as alternatives, despite additional costs and limited support for learning activities. In this context, student housing has the potential to serve as an alternative informal learning space, yet related studies remain limited, spesifically regarding the design factors that support this function. This study aims to identify student housing design factors that influence its use as an informal learning space. The study employs a literature review method by combining thematic synthesis and qualitative systematic review conducted in several stages to integrate the contexts of informal learning space (ILS) and student housing. The data used consist of systematic review-based studies on informal learning space, as well as relevant student housing literatures selected based on predefined criteria. The findings identify potentially relevant informal learning space design factors within the context of student housing and classify them into six categories: social and personal factors, physical environmental factors, spatial and ergonomic factors, accessibility and availability factors, supporting facility factors, and management and operational factors, while also mapping their levels of relevance potential.

Abstract

The Netherlands-Indies/Indonesian pavilions for international expositions are interesting and important to be studied because, as they were limited in number, they can tell the story of Indonesia’s point of view, situation, progress, and vision over time. Moreover, considering the huge diversity of ethnicities and cultures, the pavilions can be taken as a lesson on how Indonesia sees diversity and represents it in a ‘small’ building. This study aims to comprehend the meaning of the pavilions’ architecture and how they were constructed by discussing collected images and texts about those pavilions. The research objects are pavilions from three exhibitions during the Netherlands-Indies period and four from the Indonesian period. This qualitative comparative study uses content analysis from literary and visual sources in their context. It was found that the architectural image of the pavilions played an important role in responding to the expo theme, displaying diversity and identity, and giving a narration about Indonesia.

Abstract

As a courtyard gateway imbued with symbolic significance, the angkul-angkul embodies Balinese cultural and spiritual values while offering a distinctive tectonic expression that merits preservation. This study seeks to uncover the essence and underlying tectonic principles inherent in the construction and architectural articulation of the angkul-angkul, with the aim of elucidating its architectural value within the traditional building system and identifying its primary structural components. Employing a qualitative methodology, the research integrates an extensive literature review with the Delphi method to achieve expert consensus and ensure analytical validation. The results indicate that the angkul-angkul manifests a harmonious balance among aesthetic visual identity, tradition-based construction systems, and philosophical meaning. These values are articulated through six principal aspects: form, dimension, structure, spatial configuration, materiality, and ornamentation. Collectively, these six aspects constitute the fundamental basis shaping both the structural integrity and aesthetic expression of the angkul-angkul. Ultimately, the study’s findings establish a structured set of design criteria that can inform and guide future angkul-angkul design practices, ensuring that its ongoing development remains contextually grounded, sustainable, and aligned with local cultural principles.

Abstract

Makaling Village, located in South Papua Province, exhibits multi-functional spatial characteristics that operate on two scales: micro and meso. The village is inhabited by the Coastal Malind, a sub-tribe of the Malind Anim, whose spatial practices generate distinctive multi-functional spatial phenomena. In contemporary urban contexts, the concept of multifunctionality and the pursuit of modernity often require flexible spatial arrangements to accommodate diverse activities within a single space. This tendency is largely driven by the limitations of land availability amid increasing population pressure and escalating spatial demands. In contrast, rural settlements such as Makaling reveal a different manifestation of multifunctionality known as kamem la sai, which embodies deeper spatial and cultural layers beyond what is physically perceptible. This phenomenon is rooted in a local philosophical concept referred to as otih ka kaleh wabla. The study employs eidetic reduction analysis within the framework of Husserl’s transcendental phenomenological qualitative research. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and direct field observations, leading to the identification of several observation units, thematic structures, and conceptual layers each corresponding to stages of phenomenological reduction. The primary objective of this research is to articulate the intentional awareness inherent in the kamem la sai phenomenon in Makaling, as revealed through the phenomenological reduction process. The implications of this study extend to the development of human resources in architectural academia, the formulation of government policies, spatial planning practices, and architectural design approaches in Merauke, Papua. Furthermore, the research contributes to the advancement of theoretical discourse on multi-functional space, local wisdom, and transcendental meaning within the context of Papuan vernacular settlements.
