Abstract

This research was to find out whether teaching descriptive writing by using the Place Mat technique would be effective to improve the writing skills of students and to find out their responses to the implementation of this technique. The sample for this research was 56 students from the first grade at SMAN 4 Banda Aceh in the academic year 2014/2015. A true experimental design was used in this research in which two classes were selected at random, one to be the experimental class, and the other the control class. The instruments used to collect the data were tests and a questionnaire. There were two steps in collecting the test data, namely the pre-test and the post-test. To get the students’ responses to the implementation of this technique, a questionnaire was used. The results revealed that there was a significant difference in achievement in writing descriptive texts between the students who were taught using this technique and those who were taught by using the individual writing activity. This was proven by the score from the t-test on the post-test which was 3.27 that was higher than the t-table score which was only 1.684. Furthermore, based on the result from the questionnaire, the students responded positively toward the use of this technique for teaching writing.

Abstract

Regarding the phenomenon of language contacts that happen nowadays, a lot of traditional languages are in the threat of extinction, including Acehnese language (Aziz Amery, 2016). Many Acehnese adolescents, recently, have discriminated the language and, too, they have preferred to use Bahasa Indonesia in their daily life contexts compared to the Acehnese language. This concerned issue, as a result, would bring an effect on the existence of Acehnese language in the future as well as its varieties such as idioms. These idioms constitute spoken or figurative language have been existing side by side among Acehnese people and cultures from long time ago. Those idioms are magnified not only to express emotional feeling but also to soften utterances. Consequently, this study aimed at investigating Acehnese adolescents’ understanding about Acehnese idioms since idiomatic expressions depict language users’ proficiency. Qualitative research designed was used and the data were collected through a questionnaire set consisting of 10 Acehnese idiomatic expressions. There were 51 respondents, aged within 18-21 years old who all are indigenous Acehnese. The result suggests that Acehnese adolescents are still knowledgeable about Acehnese idioms. There are 72.8% of the whole respondents who are considered to understand the idioms asked in the questionnaire sets. From additional data, it was obtained that those who did not understand the expressions come from different language continuum. In conclusion, Acehnese adolescents are still aware of the idiom use in Acehnese language. And most importantly, they still understand those expressions.

The indicator forms of the researcher used in the level of code-mixing are words, phrase, clause, baster, idiom, and repetition level, while types of code mixing assessed are creative spelling, phonetic typing, word play, abbreviation and meta tags. The research magnified a descriptive qualitative method in which Instagram and WhatsApp’s documents (status, caption, feed, and comment) were observed to get data. Still, a questionnaire was also applied to find out the reasons behind the use of code-mixing among 50 respondents who were selected by using purposive sampling. Result of the research from the respondents’ social accounts reveals that the majority of the respondents used code-mixing in phrase level, while none of them used idiom level. Still, the type of code-mixing frequently used on their social platforms to run online communication is spelling errors. The result of the questionnaire nails some factors behind the usage. Most of the respondents chose to use code-mixing because they want to learn and understand new words by inserting them in sentences. Meanwhile, only some of them felt that to look cool and smart is the reason for using code-mixing on their social media. Keywords: code, code-mixing, social media, youngster.

Abstract

Family is the ideal platform to maintain the indigenous language, and parents are the core feature in promoting it to the children. Many previous studies have concentrated on the Acehnese younger generations’ declination use of Acehnese. Their perception of the language is initially linked to the parents’ attitude towards it since the parents’ attitude determines the children’s perception of it. Hence, the present research aims to fill in the gap by assessing the language attitude of the Acehnese parents living in the urban areas on Acehnese and searching for their efforts in passing the language to their descendants. Fifty-five respondents from three different districts in Banda Aceh were purposely selected by considering some criteria to fulfill the need of this research. The data were collected by distributing questionnaires and analyzed using a descriptive quantitative model; a five-point Likert Scale, a weighted mean score, a mean combined score, and a score interval to put the results based on their criteria. The result shows that the language attitude of the Acehnese parents is in good criterion (4.2); they honor, respect, and are proud of speaking the language as their identity. Moreover, they also put some genuine efforts into maintaining and inheriting the language by speaking the language while interacting with the spouse, children, and other Acehnese community members; and promoting the language to their children in several ways despite living in urban areas.
