Abstract

This research aims to unveil the types of online collaborative learning activities undertaken by prospective EFL teachers in one of Indonesian universities located in West Nusa Tenggara Province, along with the barriers to such learning environment and their sources. This research employed mixed-method research with explanatory sequential design and to collect the data, a survey with 41-item questionnaire developed based on six constructs derived from previous research entailing motivation, commitment, social interaction, technical skills, time and support and technical problems distributed to 53 respondents and a semi-structured interview administered to 10 selected interviewees to elicit deeper information on the perceived barriers. Data analysis executed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis suggests that most of the respondents utilized learning management system and WhatsApp group to carry out collaborative learning tasks. They also reported that the mostly undertaken collaborative activities entail group projects, group discussion, group presentation, and knowledge sharing. In addition, while generally the respondents select neutral responses across all the construct, there is a constant higher refusal than agreement rates to the barriers in all constructs except for the technical problems. This further implies that the barriers on the online collaborative learning depends on several factors and all these constructs are mutually interconnected.

Abstract

This paper aims to unveil an American couple’s, Andi and Becky (Psudonyms), experiences when learning Bahasa Indonesia for foreign speakers in Indonesia (BIPA) informally aside from their non- formal learning. They were undertaking a BIPA course hosted by a language center running under a higher education institution. The research in this paper employed a narrative inquiry method of research mainly through interview to cast more light on their informal learning of BIPA. From the findings, it was revealed that they perceived informal BIPA learning as important as the course they were taking and they believed that culture was part of language learning therefore in their views, experiencing it at the natural context would be the best way of learning the culture. Furthermore, when carrying out informal learning to support their BIPA course, they hung out to public place to make exchanges with local people, invited local friends to come home and to help them practice speaking, always took a small notebook of new vocabulary list, the visualization of vocabulary through drawing, writing a journal, listening to Indonesian music, and watching YouTube video. Most of these findings were consistent with the account of sociocultural perspective and situated cognition on learning.

Abstract

This paper seeks to explore the undergraduates’ experiences when reading journal articles as references for their thesis composition through a narrative inquiry. Four undergraduates of English Language Education program at UIN Mataram were interviewed to analyze  what they encountered when reading such genre. The findings suggest that their experiences mostly circulated around their motivation and challenges, therefore the narratives were focused on these facets. In terms of motivation, these students seemed to be strongly driven by controlled motivation that entailed the need for a model, accessibility and currency, as well as demands from supervisors and institutions. Furthermore, these students also encountered challenges in terms of unfamiliar academic technical terms and vocabulary, boredom due to text complexities, and failed reading strategies. These findings imply the need of scaffolding the reading of journal articles for undergraduates in their final year of study.

Abstract

As an emerging field of research, halal tourism has been increasingly grabbing researchers’ attention inthe academic realm. Nonetheless, due to its novel nature, scientific inquiry on this topic in Indonesiancontext seems to hither to be more theoretical rather than empirical. By exploring insights from scientificpublications on journals and proceedings dated from the last decade, we came up with a suggestion ofcalling for epitomes of more empirical evidence to develop body of knowledge on the topic. Current stateof the art of research on halal tourism in Indonesia still mostly circulates around the concept of halaltourism which is not clear cut though some researchers attempted to investigate people’s perceptions onthe concept and practices through surveys and group discussions. This paper suggests more researchdevoted to empirical findings which seek for evidence on the elements of halal tourisms that entail thepeople involved (guests and hosts), the destinations, and the travel management. All these elements arealso linked to the need of investigating local and national policies pertinent to the topic.
