Abstract

Alas! A space, in this case the urban forest, primary considered as public domain which presence is potentially significant as the established-natural-ecology is read but a subject, or valuable entity by investors who want to take over the site to be used as a commercial enterprise promoting economic benefits. The former even tend to deny the historical values and issues on earth-conservation. The complexity of the struggle to win the dispute between the investors, brings the notion of the anthropocentric agenda with local inhabitants over an area which is home to scarce vegetation and indigenous animals, as well as water spring at the heart of Malang City becomes the main awareness excavated by Ratna Indraswari Ibrahim through her work, Lemah Tanjung. Through the perspective of Postcolonial Ecocriticism, the particular point presented in this paper is how Ecological Imperialism is narrated and presented in the novel? The discussion found several indications that Lemah Tanjung, the name of the disputed-place is attributed to and positioned as an alien or other which should not be maintained. It is exploited due to the ‘development’ by investors, teamed-up with the bureaucrat. The struggle to liberate Lemah Tanjung from the conflict of interest seems to be long and windy since there are unequal power relation due to lack of support from fellow dwellers around the forest thanks to the terrors conducted by the powerful. Keywords: Postcolonial Ecocriticism, ecological imperialism, Lemah Tanjung, teror, relasi kuasa

Abstract

This study aims to produce a nonformal literary learning model for children contribute to social conflict reconciliation which is acceptable and contains locality values in a postcolonial perspective. The perspective enables participants involved in this learning process to understand their role in (re) producing or changing discourse exposed in the learning process; to connect literacy with problem solving for conflict reconciliation, to connect content learned in non-formal academic situations with the current situation of the digital world in daily life exposed to global trends. The learning model was observed on residents affected by the relocation of the construction of the Yogyakarta International Airport consisting of 4 Villages. There are 16 samples which are elementary school age children, and 16 samples of their mothers. Sampling using a purposive random sampling technique. The data collection method uses the method of documentation, observation, and two questionnaires namely PK and KT series. Data analysis was qualitative using Cohen-Kappa coefficient analysis. The result shows that the procedure for developing informal literary learning model in 4 affected villages is able to produce appropriate and applicable mentoring models in accordance with 3 classifications namely literacy capital, knowledge of locality, and perception of otherness. The coefficient of inter-rater κ results from an evaluation of the accuracy of the model is 0.75 therefore it meets the level of feasibility model.

Abstract

This study aims to identify preferred aspects in creating digital-based learning materials for Creative Writing students in the COVID-19 pandemic situation. The lack of direct interaction with the lecturer and actual classroom causes them to be less enthusiastic about learning. Thus, a suitable composition of digital media is needed to solve the respective students' problems. Interactive, flexible, helpful, and easy to access are the key points of the composition. It may provide audio and video that help students to enhance their comprehension. The researchers use a descriptive qualitative approach regarding students' preferences to expose the actual data. The result shows that 89,7% of students prefer asynchronous, interactive, and flexible digital video available online as it allows them to get the virtual presence of the teacher and go through the material repeatedly. This particular media must be equipped with a microblogging platform for discussion, such as WhatsApp Group. The video-based media also provides a solution since internet connection has always been an obstacle for students holding classes with synchronized video conferencing.

Abstract

This study aims to examine students’ attitudes towards public speaking class and the possible causes that lead them to have anxiety in performing impromptu speech. A qualitative research design employing the in-depth semi-structured interview has been carried out with 23 students of Tidar Islamic Boarding School in Magelang, Central Java. The study involves a public speaking class consisting of 8 male students and 15 female students. The Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) questionnaire was also given to the students to measure the level of their anxiety in performing impromptu speech. The findings show that the students have positive attitudes towards public speaking class. Meanwhile, the possible cause of anxiety are because they are not accustomed to speak in English, especially in front of many people, and the lack of vocabularies and confidence.

Abstract

This study explores how similes and metaphors function semantically in Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet (1996) and how their interpretation is influenced by the film’s multimodal elements. Figurative language in Shakespeare’s original works, while rich and expressive, often poses comprehension challenges for modern students due to its historical and linguistic complexity. To address this, the research examines how cinematic techniques such as visuals, sound, and performance can support the teaching of Shakespeare’s figurative expressions in contemporary classrooms. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the study analyzes 30 selected similes and metaphors from key scenes across all five acts of the film. Each expression is first interpreted semantically through comparison with its original textual context, and then examined in relation to the film’s visual and auditory cues. The analysis integrates metaphor theory and multimodal discourse analysis to reveal how meaning is shaped through both language and cinematic form. Findings show that Luhrmann’s adaptation not only preserves the poetic essence of Shakespeare’s figurative language but also enhances its interpretability for modern learners. Metaphors such as love as fire, smoke, or the sea become more accessible when reinforced by imagery, music, and actors’ expressions. The study concludes that film can serve as an effective pedagogical tool for teaching complex literary devices, fostering both semantic understanding and emotional engagement.

Abstract

Nowadays, technological developments are really very fast so it requires students to be able to follow them. Like what was done during a pandemic, learning was done online so lecturers had to prepare the material properly by using internet facilities for teaching. Unfortunately, learning is still considered to have many problems during the pandemic, both in terms of material and media used, resulting in a learning loss. This study highlights the development of video-based digital content learning which are integrated into learning. The method used in this study was research and development. The steps to develop the media were applied Four-D model by Thiagarajan and Semmel. The video-based digital content learning presents interactive learning in the form of videos integrated with learning management system, ELITA. The media has been tested on 25 students at Universitas Tidar during the covid-19 pandemic and showed good acceptance. The results of this study indicate that video-based digital content is feasible and effective to be used in supporting student motivation and learning outcomes. This implies that digital content learning is of value to be used and applied in online learning for teaching university students.
