Abstract

Integrating values in the teaching and learning of English becomes the main concern of education in Indonesia. There are 18 values of character building in national character and cultural education which are demanded to be integrated in the teaching and learning process. However, the implementation is mostly heard from lower level of education. Therefore, it is considered important to conduct the study on the higher level of education or university, especially in the productive course such as speaking class. This leads to the interest on conducting study on the lecturers’ verbal feedback in English teaching as the reflection of teaching character values. Preliminary study was conducted by interviewing students of speaking class to get information related to the technique, method, and material used in the speaking class. Three speaking class’ lecturers will be the subject of the research. Observation is conducted to collect the data by using observation sheet and recorder as instrument. The interview takes students as the object in order to get their perspective to the feedback give. The result shows that there are three kinds of verbal feedback used. They are corrective feedback, interactive feedback, and evaluative feedback. The result of interview shows students positive perspective toward the feedback and the values they acquired from the feedback give. From the observation and interview, it can be concluded that the concealed values taught during the speaking class, they are disciplines, curious, respect, democracy, and communicative.

Abstract

Discovery learning approaches, in particular, are designed to engage students in inquiry through which, guided by the teacher and materials, they "discover" the intended content. Still, the tension remains, for example, in moments when students make discoveries other than as intended The choosing of word in dictionary influences the meaning of comprehending the text by the students. In dictionary, there are so many meanings in one word. It based on the context that we have to use to comprehend a text. The discussion starts with the condition of nowadays, there are two kinds of dictionary named printed and online dictionary. These two kinds of dictionary can help the students to improve their comprehension to understand a text. Besides using the dictionary, the students needed to discover the learning process by them in choosing the word showed by the online dictionary to be used in comprehend a certain text. This journal concentrates in improving the comprehension of the text of students’ using online dictionary and discovery learning.

Abstract

Politeness as part of language aspect is an important matter to discuss in language. Politeness deals with the term of addressing particular people which is important in Banjarese language as it shows respect and sentences tone. This article discusses the words used by Banjarese youth in addressing people. The writer observed the interaction between youth and elderly during the Ied Fitri holiday and presented the result on the tables. The result is expected to give a theoretical contribution on the language discussion. Abstrak: Kesantunan sebagai bagian dari aspek berbahasa merupakan hal yang penting untuk dibahas dalam berbahasa. Sopan santun berkaitan dengan istilah menyapa orang tertentu yang penting dalam bahasa Banjar karena menunjukkan rasa hormat dan nada kalimat. Artikel ini membahas tentang kata-kata yang digunakan oleh pemuda Banjar dalam menyapa orang. Penulis mengamatiinteraksi antara pemuda dan orang tua selama liburan Idul Fitri dan mempresentasikan hasilnya di atas meja. Hasil penelitian ini diharapkan dapat memberikan kontribusi teoritis pada pembahasan bahasa.

Abstract

Vocabulary in English is a common problem encountered in teaching and learning. This study aims to describe the steps of designing or developing vocabulary learning media using art and crafts. The purpose of this study is to teach primary school teacher training on the third-semester at Achmad Yani University Banjarmasin. This study used classroom action research. This method emphasizes on textbooks, journals and other relevant sources as sources of data and theoretical studies. The variables focused on here include the use of various art and craft activities in vocabulary teaching as independent and the success level of the students to present and participate in their learning English vocabulary.
