Abstract

Article clarified the relationship between knowledge of syntax and reading skill in English for specific purposes. The research was conducted at the Industrial Engineering Faculty of Trisakti University in 2002 with sample of 100 students using simple random sampling by Lottery. Data was analyzed by using simple regression test and simple correlation test. The result of the research revealed that there was a positive relationship between knowledge of syntax and reading skill in English for specific purposes. It is concluded that reading skill in English for specific purposes can be improved by increasing knowledge of syntax.

Abstract

Journalistic language is one kind of language used by mass media and had different characteristic with literature, scientific or conventional language in general. In journalistic language, the journalists should write according to facts and should not include their opinion; but the writing should also include informative, persuasive, and understandable meanings as general, brief, and clear. Journalistic language is a language used in public media written by considering some characteristics in order to be easily understood by the reader in general. Therefore, this article is intended to explore those characteristics and their implementation. The result shows that there are six characteristics of Journalistic language namely: brief, dense, simple, straightforward, interesting and clear. It is also found that some printed media in Indonesia haven’t met those characteristics yet.

Abstract

This article aims at describing the effectiveness of teaching creative writing using cinquain poetry. The research was conducted at Lia Stephanie Elementary School. The students were given a pre-test, three time meetings, and a post-test. To figure out the significant difference between students’ pre-test and post-test, research used ‘Descriptive Qualitative Analysis’ since this analysis could describe the facts found during the research and it could also explain whether the aim of this research was achieved or not. In addition, this research also observed the students during the process of learning in order to find out students’ response toward the Cinquain poetry technique. Finally, the teaching creative writing using cinquain poetry was proved to be an effective medium at Elementary School.
