Abstract

Based on disaggregated data, this study empirically examines the importance of foreign portfolio investment (FPI) to the Malaysian economic performance. The study adopts the vector error correction model to analyze the relationships between FPI inflows from major investing countries, namely the United States, the United Kingdom, Singapore and Hong Kong and Malaysia’s real GDP using quarterly data covering the period from Q1:1991 to Q3:2007. For further inferences, this study adopts an innovation accounting by simulating variance decompositions and impulse response functions. This study finds that there is a significant positive association between Malaysia’s GDP and U.K.’s FPI inflow, particularly in the long run.

Abstract

Fertility has a close relationship with female labor force participation and is predicted to be the prominent factor affecting female labor force participation in rich and emerging countries. The decline in fertility worldwide, accompanied by increased female education, is assumed to increase female labor force participation. The increase in the female labor force participation rate can improve economic incentives for the country. Therefore, this study estimates the effect of fertility and female education on female labor force participation in cross-country panel datasets from 39 Asian countries, using panel ARDL analysis from 1990-2018. This study also examines the panel causality between the variables employing Dumitrescu and Hurlin’s (2012) Granger non-causality test. According to the Hausman test, among the three models in panel ARDL, DFE is the preferred model compared to the PMG and MG. The results revealed that fertility was negatively significant on female labor participation in the short run but not in the long run. In contrast, female education was positively significant on female labor participation in the long run but not in the short run. Meanwhile, the panel causality showed a bidirectional relationship between female labor participation and fertility, female labor participation and education, and fertility and female education.

Abstract

This study was designed to empirically determine: (i) to look the factors causes micro enterprises opt for using internal funding instead of external funding; and (ii) to observe the probability of micro enterprises opt for Cash Waqf fund as alternative source of funding their business. The primary data is collected from the administered survey questions in Klang Valley (Selangor and Kuala Lumpur) and the analysis is conducted using statistical analysis and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The model is validated its acceptance in the field by adopting the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA). From the findings, among the factors that lead micro enterprises to use internal funding are strict collateral requirement by commercial financial institutions, high cost of financing, strict documentation requirement and good financial and business track record. Unfortunately, most of them cannot fulfill these conditions and continue to face the problem of accessing finance. The present study has developed the Cash Waqf Investment model to support micro enterprises to improve their access to finance and enhance the skills. Based on the responses received from the field, it has been shown that the intention and readiness of micro enterprises in accepting the model as a source of financial and human capital development services is impressive.

Abstract

The ASEAN-China Free Trade Area (ACFTA) represents a critical agreement between ASEAN member countries and China, aimed at fostering economic integration by eliminating or reducing trade barriers, enhancing service market access, refining investment regulations, and bolstering economic cooperation. This framework is designed to strengthen economic ties and enhance welfare across the involved nations. This study evaluates the impact of the ACFTA on trade dynamics by analyzing the Trade Intensity Index (TII), GDP, exchange rates, and a dummy variable representing the ACFTA's implementation. Utilizing annual data from 2001 to 2021, sourced from the UN-Comtrade Database and the World Bank, the research employs the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) method to provide insights into the trade relationships under the ACFTA framework. The findings indicate a divergent impact, while Indonesia experiences a negative and significant influence from GDP, exchange rates, and ACFTA implementation, the ASEAN-6 countries display a positive and significant effect. Moreover, the study reveals that Indonesia's Trade Intensity Index with other ACFTA members is comparatively lower than Malaysia’s. This suggests a need for targeted trade policies in Indonesia aimed at amplifying export volumes in sectors where it holds a comparative advantage. Such strategies could significantly enhance Indonesia's trade intensity within the ACFTA, fostering greater economic integration and benefits under this expansive regional trade agreement.

Abstract

An early warning system (EWS) is widely used as surveillance mechanism for preserving financial system stability. This paper addresses the issue of namely which macroeconomic indicators that are capable of signaling adverse shocks towards the resilience of Islamic banking in Indonesia. This research uses an extraction signal approach as EWS mechanism. The results suggest that there are several indicators that (1) IBRI, which is composed from standardized deposit and financing, is able to figure out the resilience of Islamic banking. The resilience of Islamic banking was considered stable since the index was moving below the normal line during the global financial crises, and (2) Some selected macro financial indicators, M2/reserve (M2res), credit growth (CG), real effective exchange rate (REER), and inflation rate (INF) empirically show low noise to signal ratio. It means that these four variables are capable of signaling vulnerabilities due to adverse external shocks. The paper recommends that the resilience of Islamic banking needs to be supported by the resilience in the real sector.DOI: 10.15408/aiq.v9i1.3881

Abstract

Zakat, one of the five pillars of Islam, is a religious obligation for Muslims worldwide, irrespective of their place of residence or work. This research investigates the factors influencing the likelihood of Muslim foreign workers in Malaysia to pay zakat fitr and zakat income. Data was collected via a survey conducted in the Wilayah Persekutuan area (Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya), and analyzed using logistic regression. The study found that the propensity to pay zakat fitr is primarily influenced by the workers’ knowledge of zakat fitr and their employment sector. In contrast, the likelihood of paying zakat income is significantly determined by gender (with males being more likely), income level, knowledge of zakat income, and the motivational factors of religiosity and recognition. The study also revealed that the respondents’ willingness to pay zakat in Malaysia in the future is likely influenced by their understanding of the zakat distribution system in the country. These findings provide valuable insights for policymakers and zakat institutions in enhancing the efficiency of zakat collection and distribution. Further research is recommended to validate these findings in other contexts and among different demographic groups.============================================================================================================ABSTRAK - Praktik Zakat Pekerja Migran Muslim di Malaysia.
