Abstract

AbstractWriting as one of language aspects becomes the main language practice in each English class. Regarding to the college student task, writing English job application letter requires college students to provide the well-formed letter for job preparation. Therefore, understanding the errors of English sentence structure in college students’ job application letters can bring the suitable English grammar study for writing the formal letter. This research was conducted to find the errors on English job application letters written by college students in fourth semester at STMIK Sinar Nusantara. The respondents were selected as many as 30 students by using purposive random sampling technique. The collected data were taken from the respondents’ writings, English job application letter. The analysis used the algorithm of conducting error analysis proposed by Corder. In this research, students’ job application letters indicate omission with its 92 data or 35,35 % error, mis-formation with its 80 data or 30,80% error, mis-ordering with its 63 data or 24,23% error, and addition with its 25 data or 9,62% error. This research indicates that though the students had references of English job application letters from internet, they still had errors in writing own English sentences in formal form. Keywords: Error Analysis, English Error Analysis, English Application Letters, Job Application Letters, English Formal Letters

Abstract

The level of rice productivity is influenced by several inhibiting factors, for example disease attack in rice plants. The slow and inappropriate treatment of rice plant can make the crop failure so that rice production and farmers' income decrease. The symptoms of rice disease are difficult to distinguish, especially in severe symptoms. Collaboration with other fields, especially computer science, is needed to classify diseases automatically so that the farmers can take action for plant treatment and the spread of disease can be controlled quickly. The classification of diseases based on images requires the best features/characteristics so that the disease can be classified. In this research, Deep Learning method, especially Convolutional Neural Network with EfficientNet B3 architecture, can extract features very well. In this research, the classification of brown spot and bacterial leaf disease by applying EfficientNet B3 with transfer learning reached 79.53% accuracy and 0.012 loss/error.

Abstract

Rumah Singgah “Classku” merupakan program individu yang didirikan saat pandemi Covid-19 pada tahun 2021 dan memiliki anak-anak binaan dengan latar belakang ekonomi rendah. Rumah Singgah “Classku” belum memiliki video profil sebagai media informasi digital dikarenakan kurangnya pengetahuan pemilik mengenai teknologi informasi. Tujuan kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini adalah untuk membuat video profil rumah singgah dan memberikan pemahaman dan pengarahan terhadap pemilik mengenai media informasi digital. Kegiatan ini juga bertujuan untuk meningkatkan ketrampilan kosa kata berbahasa Inggris anak-anak Rumah Singgah “Classku” selama masa pembelajaran jarak jauh. Tahap pra kegiatan pengabdian ini menggunakan wawancara dengan pemilik rumah singgah, melakukan observasi, dan menganalisa kebutuhan program. Tahap pelaksanaan kegiatan adalah berbagi pengetahuan dengan pemilik dan 10 anak-anak rumah singgah. Hasil kegiatan ini adalah 100% realisasi video profil sebagai video promosi digital, 85% peningkatan pengetahuan maupun ketrampilan pemilik mengenai media informasi digital, dan 82% peningkatan ketrampilan kosa kata bahasa Inggris anak-anak Rumah Singgah “ClassKu”.

Abstract

Duolingo application in mobile assisted language learning can help students flexibly to learn English listening skills by its game-based features. Meanwhile, listening skill as one of significant language aspects for oral communication purpose is highly required for professional need by vocational senior high school. Therefore, this research was intended to find out the progress of students’ English listening skill in SMK Analis Kesehatan Nasional Surakarta using Duolingo and students’ perceptions toward the mobile application. This study used quantitative research with pre-experimental design and its data collection used pre-test, post-test, and close-end questionnaire. The findings show that scores of students’ pre-test and post-test presented significant improvement of students’ English listening skill. The average students’ pre-test score was 73.25 while the average students’ post-test score was 83.3. It was supported by students’ perception that 90% students gave positive perception to the usage of Duolingo mobile application in their English learning process.

Abstract

This research was aimed at finding out the student’s English speech errors of STMIK Sinar Nusantara using psycho-linguistic approach. This study belongs to the qualitative descriptive research with 30 respondents selected by using simple random sampling. The data were collected by recording the students’ presentation. After that the data were analyzed by conducting observation and classification the errors found in the respondents’ speech using psycho-linguistic approach proposed by Clark and Clark. The result of the study showed that there were 336 (100%) speech errors found which were than classified into Silent Pause (34%), Filled Pause (13.7%), Repeats (9.2%), Retraced False Start 0.3%), Corrections (4.5%), Interjections (3.7%), Stutters (14%), dan Slip of Tongue (20.1%).

Abstract

Educational institutions have implemented online distance learning and teaching since the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia around March 2020. This research was conducted to find the effectiveness and its factors of virtual learning on English speaking skills in the early of pandemic. This study was a descriptive qualitative. This research was conducted at STMIK Sinar Nusantara Surakarta in Central Java. The time of research was started from April until June 2020 and it was conducted for Second-semester students in the academic year of 2019/2020 with 50 students for the number of populations from Information System program. For the research findings, virtual learning was not effective in grammar and fluency aspects and it was less effective in accent and vocabulary aspects for second-semester students of Information System program. Some factors have occurred in those lack of effectiveness, such as, the limitation of time in presenting speaking skill, the inefficiency of lecturer in correcting the students’ accent directly, difficulties of students in understanding material, limitations of English students’ vocabularies, and tendency of students’ speaking presentation based on the textbook.

Abstract

English language learner often deals with the problem of vocabulary learning. Students as second language learner need teacher’s guide to find adequate English vocabulary learning media. This study aimed to analyze the implementation of Microsoft Office 365 for teaching and learning English vocabulary of vocational high school students in SMK Analis Kesehatan Nasional. This study involved 20 students in eleventh grade students with the experience of using Microsoft Office 365 application for two years. By applying descriptive qualitative research, this study used questionnaire to collect the data and explain the result by description. This study presented conclusion that Microsoft Office 365 application is useful for teaching and learning English vocabulary of students in SMK Analis Kesehatan Nasional. This conclusion is based on the questionnaires’ results dealing with students’ English vocabulary comprehension in Microsoft Office 365, influence of Microsoft Office 365 toward students’ English vocabulary, and students’ English vocabulary knowledge in Microsoft Office 365. Dealing the result of questioners, 77,5% students comprehended English vocabulary in Microsoft Office 365 and 97,5% students admitted Microsoft Office 365 influenced students’ English vocabulary. In average of students’ vocabulary knowledge, 71.25% students comprehended 20 English vocabularies on homepage of Microsoft Office 365.
