Abstract

Film-induced tourism becomes a new emerging issue in tourism and scholarly research for the last 10 years. London’s “Harry Potter” series and New Zealand’s “Lord of the Rings” are among the best practices of the trend. On the other hand, Indonesia is a country with many beautiful places to visit by both local and international tourists. The number of visitors increases significantly every year. However, there is no contribution from film industry, both from local or international production, related to this increasing numbers of tourists, not before national movie production “Laskar Pelangi, 2008” (Rainbow Troops, 2008) by Riri Riza, and international box office movie production “Eat, Pray Love, 2010”. The study research will discuss about film induced tourism issues in Indonesia, particularly on why and how the two films--so far, until recently, only those two films--became phenomenon in film tourism--and why other films did not.

Abstract

There are online articles, with visual materials, stating that some post-1998 Indonesian film posters were accused as plagiarism by common people. However, academically speaking, it needs deeper skills and knowledge to prove acts of plagiarism. This paper will discuss the issues around Indonesian film posters and plagiarism, including the possibility of citing in graphic design. The research will treat film posters not only as marketing tools to promote the movies, as many people consider, but also as graphic design materials. Some terms such as appropriation, homage, and pastiche will be discussed to analyze the phenomenon.

Abstract

Although the New Order Regime (1966-1998) was widely known for its strict censorship and government control, there was a simultaneous rise in producing exploitation films with graphic and provocative images. This kind of cinema was exported internationally in the 1980s and re-released in the 2000s by transnational DVD distributors. This article analyzed the transformation of exploitation films, which were disregarded and undervalued by the Government, cultural elites, and cinema critics. It explored how these films became a battleground for the politics of taste and resulted in a series of contradictions within the political policies of the New Order. The study focused on policy studies, examining film-related policies (such as presidential decree and censorship regulations), and analyzed the findings by thoroughly examining the regulations’ trends, patterns, and anomalies. As a result, paradoxically, the New Order had to undertake trial and error towards the films that they were actually shunned, which resulted in the blooming of this kind of movie.

Abstract

This article will investigate that Javanese and Balinese Wayang Kulit Performance should be considered a legitimate  "grandfather" of modern cinema—especially in the archaeology of projection and screen. The author will apply Castle's Phantasmagoria and Manovich's Archaeology of the screen as the analysis tools. The paper will also examine direct connections between Wayang Kulit Show and contemporary cinema, particularly Layar tancap (traveling cinema), which emerged in the late 1890s in Southeast Asia Furthermore, finally, the paper will investigate to what extent the tradition of the Wayang show and its apparatus has influenced some of  Indonesia's as well as Malaysia’s terms of modern cinema to  Indonesia's  Layar tancap (traveling cinema). This research is in the same spirit as Thomas Elsaesser's proposal about the new way to reconstruct film history, moreover, consider expanding the pre-history cinema to Indonesia's shadow puppetry and putting Layar tancap as part of the global non-theatrical exhibition culture.

Abstract

Introduction: As stipulated in the Indonesian Labor Law, every worker is entitled to work safety and health protection, including the film industry. This research focuses on two articles in the Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) regulations and the Law of Film Year 2009. However, the Indonesian film industry has not officially implemented these laws. There have been several cases of HSE, which caused death or fatal injuries to film workers, without applying the regulations. Other HSE issues include the cases where only a few film producers gave insurance to the film workers, applied proper risk assessment, or provided first aid kits. The paper will overview HSE in the Indonesian film industry by mapping out the problems and potential solutions. Methods: By having in-depth interviews with key persons in the field, such as the workers and film producers, this research aims to map out such issues and answering why and how the laws on work health and safety are not implemented in the Indonesian film industry. Result: This research has resulted in maps of problems and recommendations for policymakers, film workers, and related institutes concerning HSE and the rights of film workers, including of the lack awareness of film workers on HSE and HSE-related curriculum in film education, as well as the need for stronger film associations and union. Conclusion: HSE in the Indonesian film industry must be evaluated to be more effective. Some factors to be reviewed include law enforcement in contracts, health insurance, the collaboration of various parties, HSE-related knowledge in the curriculum in Indonesian film education, and the application of Work Competency Standards (SKKNI) to all film professional associations.
