Abstract

This research aimed to present the findings of English modals in modal verb phrase structures in educational essays of ‘Sherry Johnson’ and ‘Tamjid Mujtaba’, which to increase the learners’ awareness of modals when they hesitate in the foreign language, which is the very common in writing. This research used qualitative research to analyze the modal verb phrase in educational essays of ‘Sherry Johnson’ and ‘Tamjid Mujtaba’. This research has found that the most frequent modal verbs in these essays are can, may, will, should, would, and must. The researchers found 23 different modal verbs in ‘Sherry Johnson’ and ‘Tamjid Mujtaba’ academic essays documents that indicate actions, states and conditions associated with education. The most used modals were in ‘Tamjid Mujtaba’ essay, it produced 12 modals. These results correspond with the definition of these documents. The findings are proofing of how language expresses the characteristics of an academic text type in a professional and academic way domain.

Abstract

Pandemi COVID-19 memaksa siswa di semua tingkatan untuk belajar di rumah secara daring. Aplikasi WhatsApp merupakan salah satu aplikasi obrolan yang banyak digunakan untuk memfasilitasi proses pembelajaran daring. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui penggunaan WhatsApp dalam proses pembelajaran daring di tingkat Pendidikan Anak Usia Dini (PAUD), sekaligus menginvestigasi perspektif para guru PAUD terkait penggunaan WhatsApp dalam sistem pengajaran dan pembelajaran secara daring selama masa pandemi COVID-19. Desain penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode studi kasus dengan menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif. Data dikumpulkan melalui kuesioner dan wawancara kepada delapan guru PAUD di Jakarta Utara. Setelah data terkumpul, para peneliti menganalisis data dengan menggunakan teknik analisis data kualitatif yang dikembangkan oleh Miles dan Huberman (1994). Dari hasil analisis data, peneliti dapat menyimpulkan bahwa guru PAUD merasa sangat terbantu dengan adanya WhatsApp, khususnya dalam menyampaikan materi pembelajaran dan tugas di masa pandemi COVID-19. WhatsApp sangat membantu sistem pembelajaran karena memiliki fitur – fitur yang sangat membantu dalam sistem pembelajaran yaitu pengiriman video, foto, perekam suara, pengiriman file, dan juga video call group. Ini sangat memudahkan pengguna dan juga pengajar dalam proses pembelajaran secara daring, karena tidak hanya mempunyai banyak fitur tetapi juga sangat mudah dalam penggunaannya karena memiliki tampilan yang sangat mudah di mengerti.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to analyze the specific vocabulary in the Indonglish phenomenon that the Tidar University students use in the educational environment at Tidar University, the meaning that exists in Indonglish at Tidar University, and the impact Indonglish usage in the use of Indonesian is correct and right in the environment education in universities in Tidar University in a signification effort Indonesian. Indonglish is a term often used for the use of the English language which is nuanced by Indonesian culture. Indonglish study focuses on environmental education, particularly in higher education that is not only limited to the academic setting but also non-academic. The researchers used qualitative research, the data of this research were a wide range of speeches acquired in an educational environment, especially in Java, in which there are forms of language linguistically mixed Indonesian and English. Locational data source of this research were the perpetrators of students in environmental education at Tidar University. The result is the 5th semester students produced 35 Indonglish vocabulary and the 7th semester students produced 31 Indonglish vocabulary. The basic assumption for determining the locational data sources was the consideration that the students, faculties, and staffs had a varied background of social, economic, cultural so that it was expected to describe the condition of society. The data analysis was conducted by applying the distributional method that was commonly done in linguistics. The method of analysis was done after the data were collected and properly classified. Furthermore, the interpretation of the data was done.  Then, the interpreted data were presented informally.

Abstract

Language is a pivotal aspect of human being. By learning, language people can communicate with each other, get information from one to another and interact. Unfortunately, in the real condition, it is still difficult for Indonesian students to practice their English ability in daily conversation. This paper will discuss the student’s perception within implementation problems and its solutions. The aim of this study is to identify the speaking problems experienced by EFL learners in speaking English. The researcher conducted this study using the qualitative research method. To gather the results, the researcher uses a questionnaire centered on the Penny Tang (1997) on speaking problems in learning a foreign language. The study’s data is collected from thirty-five students from Tidar University in Magelang. The result of the study is that the students have problems in learning speaking English. The most problematic for the students is mother tongue use, 77% students use their other tongue in English class and 83% agree that mother tongue is easier than English.

Abstract

Personality may affect our way to learn. Based on the essential role of various forms of personalities in the cycle of studying foreign languages and understanding foreign languages, this thesis seeks to explore the effect of extroversion and introversion on the identity of English as a foreign language learner in writing research articles. Fifty students are taking part in this study. Those participants are the fifth-semester students of Tidar University who take Teaching English as Foreign Language class. They have many papers from any lecture. They can produce more than three research papers in a year. Publishing their papers still become interesting topics for them. The researcher uses descriptive qualitative method to get the result. By giving a questionnaire to all of the participants to find out their personality types and then asking about their preferences in publishing research papers. Based on the findings, researcher get main result, there are more extroverts EFL Learners than the introvert one. They could give wide perspectives about publishing their papers. Their perspectives on their preferences depend on any reason that supports the result.

Abstract

Pronunciation is the production of speech sounds for communication. It is the most difficult area of English. Pronunciation teaching in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) curriculum has also been ignored for many factors. As a result, numerous EFL learners have often found it challenging to speak freely because of their weak pronunciation. This study deals with the Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) of speaking skill in EFL Learners of Indonesia. The researcher used qualitative research. There were thirty-five students who filled the questionnaire and ten students read text given First, the researcher looked for the questionnaire and found the questionnaire about Willingness to communicate. Second, the findings of tense were analyzed to know what factors that affect Indonesian learners’ English pronunciation. Third, the findings were shown into tables to know the factors. Then, the researcher asked ten learners to record when they read the text given (reading passage). After that, the researcher analyzed the pronunciation rating based on the trusted rating sheets. Finally, the researcher drew a conclusion based on the findings and discussion. This study is to investigate the factors affecting Indonesian students’ pronunciation and the distribution of pronunciation rating. The study seeks to answer two research questions (RQ): (RQ1) What are the factors affecting Indonesian learners’ English Pronunciation? and (RQ2) What are the distributions of Pronunciation Rating? This study adopted a descriptive qualitative approach which used questionnaire to build this research and reading passage. In conclusion, the researcher elaborated and answered the research questions, and explained the results and discussions about the type of factors that affect EFL learners’ in English pronunciation.

Abstract

In the modern and digital era, digital native’s learners are conceived into an era of digital networking. It keeps everything connected to technology. Digital natives with digital technical expertise and abilities which can theoretically be utilized for improved learners’ interaction in the classroom. The government has began to vigorously increase the literacy culture in schools by doing reading literacy. Teachers will be willing to provide an precedent by developing a community of literacy at school. Increased classroom reading atmosphere also improves vocabulary for learners studying English. The Seesaw Media implementation may also help learners to insert allusions to enhance scientific knowledge as a regulatory framework for learning. The aim of this research was to discern the use of Seesaw as the media of literacy to cultivate learners’ vocabulary. This research pursued to answer two research questions; (1) does Seesaw Media helps learners to improve their reading ability? And (2) what are the impacts of Seesaw Media application on the learners on developing vocabulary? The methods used by the researcher were; firstly, the researcher distributed the questionnaire with the English learner's. Secondly, the researcher assessed the feedback from the respondents. Thirdly, the researcher sought the response to the learners on the effect of reading ability by using Seesaw. This research has used descriptive qualitative to conduct the research study. This result of the research has shown the Seesaw Media helped learners to improve their reading ability.

Abstract

Digital Natives students born into an era of instant networking. It makes everything have a connection with technologies. Digital natives having sophisticated technology knowledge and skills that can be potentially harnessed for better learning engagement inside the classroom. As a follow-up to the issuance of Permendikbud Number 23 of 2015 concerning the Growth Movement of Budi Pekerti, in 2017, the government began to vigorously increase the literacy culture in schools through the “Gerakan Literasi Sekolah” (GLS). Teachers should be able to set an example in creating a spirit of literacy culture in school. Through the increasing reading culture for students, this also increases vocabulary for students in learning English. The Newsela application can help the teachers also the students to add references to enrich science as a provision for learning. This research aimed to distinguish the usage of Newsela as the media of literacy to enrich student’s vocabulary. This research pursued to answer two research questions; (1) is Newsela helps students to improve their reading ability? And (2) what are the impacts of Newsela application on the student’s on developing vocabulary? The Steps that the researchers used were; first, the researchers shared the questionnaire to the English students. Second, the researchers evaluated the responses from the respondents. Third, the researchers found out the answer about the impacts of Newsela to the students. This research used descriptive qualitative to conduct this research. This result of the research showed that Newsela helped students to improve their reading ability.

Abstract

Motivation is an inner condition that guides human behaviors towards a certain target. Motivation for learning is massively important, because the greater motivation that they have gained, the greater the learning outcomes of the learners. This research was done in the sense of low interaction in the classroom as learners seldom read a book, especially before attending to the lesson. The purpose of this research was therefore to discover the motivation of the students in reading activity to enrich the classroom interaction in learning English as a foreign language (EFL). The researcher used descriptive qualitative approach. Firstly, the study, first, the researcher looked for the questionnaire of motivation to read. Secondly, the researcher selected the constructs or in this term, the questions categories to be used in this study. Thirdly, the researcher spread the selected questions as a questionnaire to the students of fifth semester of English Department in Tidar University. Then, after the researcher had finished collecting the data, the researcher analyzed the data acquired by demonstrating the motivation of the students to read the literature review. Eventually, the researcher reported the results on the basis of the study evidence.

Abstract

The presence of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer communities is a mandatory requirement. Even though the LGBTQ+ community is a group of people concerned about religious belief, Indonesians even now regard LGBTQ+ as transgression and sin. Those who do not consequently approve of same-sex marriage. Interestingly, this perception has been disputed because, in reality, others may have started to be open-minded and fully accept the prevalence of LGBTQ+ people in LGBTQ+ communities. This study used qualitative research to investigate the perspective of Indonesian younger generations towards the LGBTQ+ community in Indonesia. The researcher used the questionnaire as an instrument for data collection with ten questions required to fulfilled by Indonesian youth to investigate their perspectives. The study's data is collected from Indonesian participants, with a total of was eighty-three Indonesian youths between the ages of 15-26 in all around Indonesia. Since the issue of the study is quite sensitive in Indonesia, there are sure of positive and negative perspectives that are also apparent in the result of questionnaires. In a nutshell, the study's aim will further help the authorities take precautions to be incorporated in the future. Also, it is to investigate the Indonesian youths from a different background of beliefs and perspectives toward the LGBTQ+ community. The implication of this research informed young people of the LGBTQ+ subculture to Indonesian parents and teachers as those responsible for educating young kids so that they would not be adversely affected by this social phenomenon.
