Abstract

Transplantation of coral reefs requires sufficient fragments but must still ensure the sustainability of coral donors. This research aimed to know the survival rate and growth rate of transplant corals with different fragment sizes and planting positions and to determine the most effective and efficient transplantation methods of the Seriatopora hystrix. The research was conducted from January to April 2016 in Serangan Island waters Denpasar Bali (1-2 m depth). The method used was a field experiment with variations of planting position (vertical, horizontal) and fragment sizes (3, 5, 7 cm). The results showed a high survival rate (98.3%) of the transplanted S. hystrix with planting position and fragment sizes variation. The variation of planting position and fragment sizes were significantly affected the length growth rate of the S. hystrix (p <0.05). The vertical planting position showed better growth compared to the horizontal planting position. The transplantation of coral with initial fragment sizes of 5 and 7 cm showed a higher growth rate than the fragment size of 3 cm. However, statistical analysis revealed no significant difference between initial fragment sizes of 5 and 7 cm. Therefore, this study demonstrated the most effective and efficient for S. hystrix transplantation showed in the vertical position with the initial fragment size of 5 cm.Key words: coral bleaching, initial fragment, tropical, zooxanthellae

Abstract

Seagrass is an aquatic biota that is ecologically and economically beneficial. This study aims to determine the community structure of seagrass in Harapan Island, Seribu Islands, Indonesia. The research was conducted using purposive sampling method, that divided into two sites which is considered to represent the ecology’s condition of Harapan Island. The site 1 was located adjacent to the mangroves area, while the site 2 was placed near a reclamation development and ship anchoring. Every site had three subsites as replications, each was 50 meters apart. Water parameters temperature, salinity, turbidity, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), depth, and organic compound of each site were measured. The results showed that coverage of seagrass in site 2 is higher than site 1 that categorized as frequent-common coverage. The site 2 had the density of 220 individuals seagrass per square meter that dominated by Cymodocea rotundata. The highest diversity index was found in the site 1 at 1.15, with the lowest dominance index being 0.39. The distribution pattern in site 1 is clustered and uniform, while site 2 is uniform. The Importance Value Index in site 1 was 114,8 by Halodule uninervis, while site 2 was 125,5 by C. rotundata. It is thought that the low diversity of seagrass at the site 2 due to it was near a reclamation development and ship anchoring that disturb the abundance and community structure of seagrass in Harapan Island. Habitat destruction and anthropogenic impact of seagrass need to be minimized to support environmental coastal and fisheries sustainability.

Abstract

Plankton is an organism that plays an important role as a water food reserve, which is influenced by environmental conditions. This study aims to determine the community structure, abundance and biodiversity of phytoplankton and zooplankton in the intertidal zone of south coast of Yogyakarta during the rainy season. The research was conducted at Pantai Drini, Kukup, and Sundak of Gunungkidul District during December 2016 - February 2017. Sampling was conducted on three observation stations in the intertidal zone of Drini Beach, Kukup, and Sundak twice a month. The water samples were taken with plankton nets number 25, then were fluidized in 4% formalin and stored at low temperatures. The results showed diversity index of plankton in Kukup Beach in January at 1.86 while the lowest value in February at Sundak Beach was 0.87. The highest plankton abundance in January at Sundak Beach was 900 individu L-1 while the lowest value in December at Kukup Beach was 217.8 individu L-1. Based on the diversity index of Shannon-Wiener, intertidal coast waters of Yogyakarta in wet season is categorized as moderate, and dominance index is categorized  as low. Plankton merupakan organisme yang berperan penting sebagai cadangan makanan perairan dan dipengaruhi oleh kondisi lingkungan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui struktur komunitas, kelimpahan dan keanekaragaman plankton pada zona inertidal pantai selatan Yogyakarta selama musim penghujan. Penelitian dilakukan di Pantai Drini, Kukup, dan Sundak Kabupaten Gunungkidul selama bulan Desember 2016 – Februari 2017. Pengambilan sampel dilakukan pada tiga stasium pengamatan di zona intertidal Pantai Drini, Kukup, dan Sundak setiap dua minggu. Sampel air diambil dengan jaring plankton nomor 25, kemudian sampel plankton difiksasi dalam formalin 4% dan disimpan pada suhu rendah. Hasil penelitian menunjukan indeks keanekaragaman jenis plankton tetinggi di Pantai Kukup pada bulan Januari sebesar 1,86 sedangkan nilai terendah pada bulan Februari di Pantai Sundak sebesar 0,87. Kelimpahan plankton tertinggi pada bulan Januari pada Pantai Sundak sebesar 900 individu L-1 sedangkan nilai terendah pada bulan Desember di Pantai Kukup yaitu 217,8 individu L-1. Berdasarkan indeks keanekaragaman Shannon-Wienner maka indeks keanekaragaman di pantai selatan Yogyakarta tergolong rendah-sedang dengan indeks dominansi tergolong rendah.

Abstract

This research aims to know the ability of Azolla sp. to improve the water quality of laundry wastewater based on COD. This research applied 6 treatments with 3 replications using Completely Randomize Design (CRD) analysis. The treatment consists of P0 (0 gram), P1 (50 gram), P2 (100 gram), P3 (150 gram), and P4 (200 gram) which was placed in a tank that contains 30 liters of laundry wastewater with 50% dilution. The parameters of water quality such as COD, pH, water temperature, and biomass were being observed in every 7 days for 21 days. The result showed that Azolla sp. has the ability to improve the quality of the water from laundry wastewater, especially in lowering the COD level. The results showed that the laundry wastewater’s COD decreases from 133,43 mg/L to 41,52 mg/L. The density and the effective time of Azolla sp. in improving the quality of laundry wastewater is on 7 days of 150 gram treatment or 14 days of 50 gram treatment

Abstract

Satellite measurement provides synoptic view of sea surface wind and can be used to study variability of coastal upwelling. Here we analyzed data of 12 years of satellite-derived sea surface wind, sea surface temperature (SST), and sea surface chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) to examine the spatial and temporal distributions of coastal upwelling off the Yogyakarta waters. Results show that upwelling occurs during the Southeast Monsoon (SEM) season. During this season, the Yogyakarta waters are dominated by strong wind speed (~7 m/s) and SST cooling (25 °C). Whereas during the Northwest Monsoon (NWM) season the low wind speed (<4 m/s) no longer favor upwelling and SST cooling. We suggest that as the Yogyakarta coastline is oriented east-west, northwesterly winds result in downwelling condition at the coast, while southeasterly winds lead to the offshore Ekman transport of surface water and subsequent upwelling.

Abstract

Penelitian keanekaragaman gastropoda telah dilakukan di Teluk Lembar yang terletak di sebelah barat daya Pulau Lombok, Nusa Tenggara Barat. Wilayah ini memiliki lingkungan yang unik, yang dicirikan oleh adanya hutan bakau, aktivitas domestik dan lalu lintas transportasi laut. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui keanekaragaman gastropoda di lokasi ini. Penelitian dilakukan pada bulan Juli sampai Agustus 2017. Pengambilan sampel gastropoda dilakukan dengan menggunakan Ekman grab dengan ukuran 12,5 x 20 cm, dari 11 stasiun yang ditentukan berdasarkan kondisi lingkungan. Kualitas air yang terdiri dari suhu, substrat, kedalaman, pH air, salinitas, dan bahan organik, diukur sesuai lokasi stasiun pengambilan sampel. Data gastropoda yang diperoleh dianalisis untuk menentukan indeks kerapatan, keanekaragaman, dan dominasi. Spesies gastropoda berhasil diidentifikasi dari Teluk Lembar yang dikelompokkan menjadi 31 genus dan 21 famili. Clypeomorus purpurastoma, Pirenella asiatica dan Terebralia palustris merupakan spesies yang paling banyak ditemukan dengan jumlah masing-masing 16,76%, 13,8% dan 12,6%. Indeks kerapatan adalah 2.675 ind/m2. Komunitas gastropoda menunjukkan tingkat keanekaragaman yang sedang (H’=1.23) dengan tingkat dominasi yang rendah (D=0.09).

Abstract

Seagrass is one of the important ecosystems in coastal areas. This study aims to determine the biomass and carbon stock in the seagrass ecosystems of the Pamegaran Island, Seribu Islands National Park, Jakarta. Data collection was conducted on December 2021 to January 2022 is done by using SeagrassWatch method and carbon data sampling results were analyzed by Kurmies method / SNI 13-4720-1998 method. Cymodocea rotundata has the highest biomass value, while Halodule uninervis has the lowest biomass value. The seagrass biomass value at the bottom of the substrate was higher than the top of the substrate in all the species found was because the rhizome contained carbohydrates and nutrients produced in the photosynthesis process and stored at the bottom of the substrate. The total value of seagrass carbon stock in the entire area is 1,932,151.36 ± 265,280.90 g C or 1.932 ± 2.652 t C with an area of 3.63 ha of seagrass beds. Thalassia hemprichii has the highest carbon stock value, while Halodule uninervis species has the lowest biomass value. The carbon stock value of the bottom of the substrate was higher than that of the top of the substrate in all species found.   Lamun adalah salah satu ekosistem penting yang ada di daerah pesisir. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui biomassa dan stok karbon pada ekosistem padang lamun di Pulau Pamegaran, Taman Nasional Kepulauan Seribu, Jakarta. Pengambilan data dilakukan pada bulan Desember 2021 hingga Januari 2022 menggunakan metode SeagrassWatch dan analisis data karbon menggunakan metode Kurmies / metode SNI 13-4720-1998. Cymodocea rotundata memiliki nilai biomassa yang tertinggi, sedangkan Halodule uninervis memiliki nilai biomassa terendah. Nilai biomassa lamun bagian bawah substrat lebih tinggi dari bagian atas substrat pada semua spesies yang ditemukan hal ini karena rhizome mengandung karbohidrat serta zat hara yang dihasilkan pada proses fotosintesis dan tersimpan pada bagian bawah substrat. Nilai total stok karbon lamun pada keseluruhan luas wilayah sebesar 1.932.151,36 ± 265.280,90 g C atau 1,932 ± 2,652 t C dengan luas wilayah padang lamun sebesar 3,63 Ha. Thalassia hemprichii memiliki nilai stok karbon tertinggi, sedangkan Halodule uninervis memiliki nilai biomassa terendah. Nilai stok karbon bagian bawah substrat lebih tinggi dari bagian atas substrat pada semua spesies yang ditemukan.

Abstract

AbstractThe food habit is one of the important information used in the fisheries resource management. This study aimed to determine food preferences, index of preponderance, and trophic level of shortfin scad (D. macrosoma) captured from the southern waters of Gunungkidul Yogyakarta, Indonesia. A total of 325 fish samples were collected from March to September 2018. Each fish sample was measured in total length, body weight, determined its sex, and then dissected. The digestive tract was measured in total length then the gut contents were preserved in 5% formaldehyde to observe the type of food composition. The results showed that shortfin scad was carnivorous fish (relative gut length = 0.47) with the diet composing of fish (84.15%), phytoplankton (8.91%), zooplankton (4.47%), and snipping shrimp (3.19%). The molecular identification showed that the main fish species eaten by shortfin scad was Cololabis saira (Scomberesocoidae).AbstrakKebiasaan pakan ikan merupakan salah satu informasi penting yang digunakan dalam manajemen sumberdaya perikanan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui preferensi pakan, indeks bagian terbesar dan tingkat trofik ikan layang deles (D. macrosoma) yang ditangkap dari Perairan Gunungkidul. Total 325 sampel ikan layang deles dikumpulkan selama bulan Maret sampai dengan September 2018. Setiap sampel ikan diukur panjang total, berat tubuh, ditentukan jenis kelaminnya kemudian dilakukan pembedahan. Saluran pencernaan diukur panjangnya, kemudian isi lambung ikan diawetkan dalam formalin 5% untuk diamati komposisi jenis makanannya. Analisis data meliputi panjang usus relatif, frekuensi kejadian, indeks bagian terbesar, dan tingkat trofik ikan layang deles. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ikan layang deles bersifat karnivora (panjang usus relatif = 0,47) dengan komposisi jenis makanan utama adalah ikan (84,15%). Makanan pelengkap layang deles adalah fitoplankton (8,91%), sedangkan zooplankton (4,47%) dan potongan udang (3,19%) merupakan makanan tambahan. Berdasarkan identifikasi molekuler, spesies ikan yang menjadi makanan utama ikan layang deles adalah Cololabis saira (Scomberesocoidae).

Highlight ResearchWastewater in hybrid grouper culture should be maintain before resirculate and dispose to aquatic environment to avoid eutrophication.Seaweed that is used for biofilter must be observed for its suitability, performance and effectivity.Ulva sp. has the best effectiveness to reduce nutrient in wastewater of hybrid grouper aquaculture by absorbing then stored into thallus.Ulva sp. is proven has the best SGR and adaptability in wastewater of hybrid grouper culture.AbstractWastewater generated from hybrid grouper culture needs to be managed to improve water quality before being recirculated, or discharged in the aquatic environment. Seaweed biofilter has been proposed in wastewater treatment technology for marine fish farming. This study aimed at comparing which of these species i.e. Ulva sp., Sargassum sp., Gelidium sp., and Dictyota sp.  work best to absorb nutrient wastewater hybrid grouper culture. This research utilized these seaweed as treatments and controls with three replications using Completely Randomized Design. A statistical analysis was conducted to investigate the significant differences in the nutrient absorptions among various seaweed species by using ANOVA and least significant difference. Non-parametric tests namely Kruskal-Walis, Mann-Whitney, and t-test were used with confidence interval of 95%. The results revealed that Ulva sp. has the best ability to reduce the Nitrogen 80%, while Dictyota able to reduce  Phosphor 88% by Dictyota sp. generated from wastewater of hybrid grouper culture. While the highest absorbtion of Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (104%) and phosphate (182%) that stored in thallus were performed by Ulva sp. Ulva sp. had the best performance and highest growth rate (1.9% d-1) as biofilter in hybrid grouper cultivation than other species.
