Abstract

Denser) which Grows on Rambutan TreesAbstractBackground: Antioxidant activity of benalu can be different if the overgrown host is different. The study for antioxidant active compounds in benalu which grows on rambutan trees has never been done, even though rambutan trees are known to have high antioxidant activity. Objective: to investigate the class of compounds contained in the active fraction with the highest antioxidant activity and to calculate their antioxidant activity using DPPH methods.Method: Extraction was carried out by maceration method and continued with fractionation using vacuum column chromatography (KCV). Qualitative tests of extract compound content and subsequent fractions were carried out by thin layer chromatography (TLC) method with the help of spray reagents. The antioxidant activity of extracts and fractions was then calculated using the DPPH method. Results: The highest antioxidant activity was fraction 5 with IC50 value 7.211 ± 0.072. The group of compounds in fraction 5 are flavonoids and tannins. Conclusion: The antioxidant active compounds in the ethanol extract of benalu which grows in rambutan were found in fraction 5 and were thought to belong to the class of flavonoids and or tannins. Keywords: antioxidant, DPPH, rambutan’s benalu, Scurrula atropurpurea (Bl.) Abstract

Salak seeds have been developed as a beverage, but there was still a little amount of research that focused on salak seeds. This research was conducted to find out the chemical compounds and the antioxidant activity of ethanolic extract and fraction of salak fruits seeds ( Salacca zalacca (Gaertn.) Voss. ) which have been grown extensively in Sleman Yogyakarta. Extraction was conducted using maceration, followed by fractionation using vacuum liquid chromatography. The identification of the chemical compounds contained in the ethanolic extract and fraction was performed by thin layer chromatography method, while the antioxidant activity was performed by DPPH method. Comparison of antioxidant activity was seen using IC50 values. The results showed that ethanol extract and fraction contained phenol, flavonoid, and tannin. The largest antioxidant activity was found in F7 with an IC50 value of 110.16 μg / ml.

Abstract

Cancer remains one of the diseases with increasing number of sufferers, but research on compounds that act as anti-cancer is also ongoing. Terpenoids have been known as a compound that can inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells. One of the medical plants that produce terpenoids is Jarak cina (Jatropha multifida Linn.). Therefore, the possibility of Jarak cina (Jatropha multifida Linn.) to have an cytotoxic activity on cancer cell proliferation is reasonably high. This study was conducted to determine the cytotoxic activity of Jarak cina (Jatropha multifida Linn.) bark extracts against cancer cell MCF-7. Jarak cina bark was extracted using the multilevel soxhlet extraction method with n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and ethanol as the solvents. All the three extracts were then tested against MCF-7 cancer cells using MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl) - 2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) method. Data analysis was performed for IC50 (ppm) parameter. The results showed that the IC50 of n-hexane extract was 313.21 ppm, while the ethyl acetate extract reached 258.38 ppm of IC50, and the IC50 of ethanol extract was 418.51 ppm. The highest potential of cytotoxicity was found in the ethyl acetate extract, so further testing would be required to optimize the proliferation inhibitory activity.
