An experiment of glued lamination has been conducted and their mechanical properties were tested. The pile component of glued laminated wood samples were prepared consisting of two jointed wood species with 2 (two), 3 (three) and 4 (four) layers. The dimension of glued laminated samples is 5 cm x 5 cm x 76 cm and all components were connected by glue. The mechanical properties observed are modulus of elasticity (MOE), modulus of rupture (MOR), compreesion parallel to the grain, shear parallel- to the grain (radial* and tangential) by Balwin universal testing machine with ASTM method.The results show that the mechanical properties glued laminated samples are adequate for construction purpose.

Experimental laminated box beam were constructed for their mechanical properties test. The pile component of box beam was prepared consisting of solid wood as upperside and downside flange and plywood or particleboard as left and right web. The dimension of box beam is 9.1 cm x 20 cm x 244 cm where the dimension of solid wood are 5.5 cm x3.5 cm x 244 cm and the dimensions of plywood and particleboard are 1.8 cm x 20 cm x 244 cm. All components were onnected by glue, nail and combination of both. The strength of box beam is based on the static bending test especially its modulus of elasticity (MOE) and modulus of rupture (MOR) by Baldwin universal testing machine with ASTM method.The results show that the experimental box beam produced had adequate MOE and MOR for construction purpose. The nail and nail-glue combination to connect plywood and particleboard components with solid wood give high value of MOE and MOR of box beam.

An investigation of felling waste was carried out at three forest enterproses in North Sumatera. In each forest enterprise, the operation weretrained before data collection was conducted.The result reveals that training has significant effect on reducing the volume of felling waste. The average felling waste before and after training are respectively 0.705 m3/ tree and 0.185 m3/tree.It is therefore recommended that operator needs to be trained before.

Implementation of felling technique in the timber estate is not yet practiced efficiently and appropriately. Study on the lowest possible felling technique (LPFT) is considered important to increase fellingproductivity and felling efficiency. This study was carried out at a timber estate in iambi in 2003. The aim of this study was to determine the effectof LPFT on fellingproductivity and efficiency.Data collected in this regard were: working time, wood volume, productivity, efficiency, stump height and felling cost. Two-categories data were analyzed with respect to their possible differences using a t-test.Results revealed that implementation of LPFT brought out more convenient impacts in comparison to the conventional felling technique (CFT), as follows: (1) Felling productivity increased at 3.177 m3/hr; (2) felling efficiency increased approximately 7.4%; (3) felling cost decreased by some Rp 159.1; and (4) the average stump height were 21.14 cm for LPFT and 32.83 cmforCFT

Penelitian penebangan hutan tanarnan industri telah dilaksanakan di areal hutan tanaman industri PT Inhutani II Semaras, Pulau Laut. Jenis pohon yang ditebang adalah mangium (Acacia mangium). Penebangan dilakukan dengan sistim tebang habis sesuai dengan tujuan pengusahaan hutan tanaman industri, sehingga contoh uji yang diamati terdiri dari 97 pohon. Perlakuan dalam penelitian ini yaitu penebangan dilakukan dengan meninggalkan tunggak serendah mungkin, dan menggunakan gergaji rantai berukuran kecil mengingat diameter pohon yang kecil tidak seperti diameter pohon pada hutan alam. Tujuan penelitian adalah untuk mengetahui produktivitas dan biaya produksi penebangan hutan tanaman industri. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa produktivitas penebangan berkisar antara 0,738-11,645 m3/jam dengan rata-rata 3,12 m3/jam. Besarnya biaya penebangan berkisar antara Rp 814/m3-Rp 18.868/m3 dengan rata-rata Rp. 4.411/m3. Produktivitas penebangan dapat ditingkatkan dengan mengefisienkan waktu kerja dan apabila produktivitas meningkat maka biaya produksi penebangan dapat diperkecil sehingga lebih murah. Untuk itu keterampilan para pekerja penebang pohon perlu ditingkatkan sehingga dapat menggunakan waktu seefektif mungkin.

Untuk mempermudah teknik pengeluaran kayu tusam pada arah menurun di daerah topografi berat di Jawa, alternatif penyaradannya adalah menggunakan sistem kabel layang gaya berat ber-rem (GSS). Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui prestasi kerja dan biaya operasi penyaradan kayu bulat. ,Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa produktivitas kerja rata-rata sebesar 0,22 m3/rit atau rata-rata sebesar 2,27 m3/jam. Besar biaya tetap alat Rp. 2.308,00/jam dan biaya tidak tetap mencapai Rp.6444,44/jam. Adapun biaya ekstraksi sebesar Rp. 3.855,70/m3.
