Abstract

Experimental    laminated   box  beam  were  constructed    for  their  mechanical  properties  test.  The pile  component  of box  beam  was prepared  consisting  of  solid  wood   as upperside  and  downside   flange  and plywood  or particleboard   as left and  right   web.   The  dimension   of  box  beam  is  9.1  cm  x  20 cm x 244  cm where  the dimension   of solid wood are 5.5 cm x3.5   cm  x 244  cm  and the dimensions   of plywood  and particleboard   are 1.8 cm  x 20 cm x 244  cm. All components   were  onnected   by glue,  nail and  combination    of  both.  The  strength   of  box  beam is based on the static  bending  test especially its  modulus  of elasticity  (MOE) and  modulus  of rupture  (MOR)  by Baldwin  universal testing  machine  with ASTM  method. The results  show  that  the  experimental     box  beam produced   had adequate  MOE and MOR  for construction   purpose. The  nail   and  nail-glue   combination    to  connect  plywood  and particleboard   components    with  solid  wood  give  high  value of  MOE and  MOR  of  box  beam.

Abstract

The  effects  of sawing pattern on recovery  and sawing   time   was studied  using  72 logs of meranti  (Shorea spp.).  The logs were divided  into  4 grades  i.e., Prime, First,  Second  and Local, each group consisting of 18 logs.  Each group  was sawn with  3  different  sawing  patterns,    namely semi  quarter, round  and  live  sawing. In  the sawing pattern study the  effect of logs  diameter, brittle heart, and sapwood  on recovery were  also observed. The  results  indicated  that  semi  quarter,  round,  and  live sawing patterns  generated  a  recovery  as much  as 46,37  %, 43,48  % and  37,61 %,  respectively. The  recovery  of Prime  grade  logs was 46,92 % which  was  not  significantly  different from  that of the First grade logs.  The  Second  grade logs produced  a recovery  of 37.12 % and was not significantly different from  that  obtained  from Lokal grade  logs. The sawing rate  was highest  when  live sawing  pattern  was applied, i.e.,  0.92  m3/ hour.

Abstract

This  work  investigates  the use of acacia  (Acacia decurrens Willds.)  bark  powder   mixed   with  paraformaldehyde as an adhesive for particleboard. The treatments included powder  contents  of 10, 12, and 14% of the oven dry  weight basis.  The paraformaldehyde   employed  has also 3 levels i.e. 20, 30, and 40%. Material used for this study  was the jeungjing (Albizia falcataria  (L.) Fosberg.) flakes.   The boards were made in the Forest Products  Research  Centre laboratory  to determine  their physical  and mechanical properties. The effect  of paraformaldehyde  content  alone on the overall particleboards  properties  was not significant.  On the other hand,  the effect  of acacia bark powder  contents  on the particle board properties were significant on water absorption, MOR  and MOE after soaking.  Those qualities were better  with higher powder  content.
