Abstract

One of  the drawbacks using plywood bonded with urea formaldehvde ( UF) is formaldehyde emission, especially in a room with limited ventilation such as mobile homes. Some countries have imposed restriction on the  limit of formaldehyde emission for certain uses. This work deals with the effect of  hardener and extender types on formaldehyde emission and on bonding strength of  the UF bonded plywood. The effect of  hardener mixed with catching agent on formaldehyde emission is positive,  i.e.   lower the formaldehyde emission at the same time lower the bonding strength.   The effect of extender types were not significant.  The interaction between hardener types and extender types were highly significant. This effect, however,  was not consistent since its effect on the bonding strength was highly significant in one type of hardener only.

Abstract

Mangrove forest  grows  widely distributed  throughout  Indonesia,  and one of the most promising  resource is in East Kalimantan.Until recently the utilization of mangrove forest  is only for  wood,  while the bark is wasted, although  various literatures have indicated that the tanning  material found   in the bark can be a intesfactory  component  for  glue manufacture. This paper presents a survey result on the standing stock of 11 mangrove species at the Forest District of Bulongan  in East Kalimantan.   The survey was based on a 25% sampling intensity  which is jointly  conducted  both by PT Karyasa Kencana and District of Forestry at Bulongan,  East Kalimantan.   The tannin  content  of  the bark  were determined  at the Forest Product  Research and Development   Centre Laboratory  in Bogor. In  this  Province,   the  mayor   tannin  producing   mangroves   are  Bruguiera caryophylloides,    Rhizophora macronata,    and   Bruguiera gymnorrhiza.

Abstract

One  of  the  drawbacks   of  using particleboard   bonded  with  urea formaldehyde  (UF)  is the  formaldehyde  emission, especially  in a room  with  limited  ventilation.  Some  countries  have imposed  restriction  of allowable  emission  for certain  uses. This  work  deals  with  the  study   on  the  effect   of  the  use of  variety  of  hardeners  types  and percentages   of  melamin formaldehyde (MF) as fortifier   on formaldehyde    emission.   The experiment   reveals that  the effect  of hardener  mixed  with catching  agent  and the effect  of fortifier on formaldehyde   emission  was effective   to curb  down  the formaldehyde   emission. The effect  of fortifier   on some physical  and mechanical properties   was observed.  It decreases water absorption  and thickness swelling,  increases shear strength;  internal  bond  strength,   and  the  modulus  of rupture,   but  did  not  affect  the modulus  of elasticity. The effect  of hardener  mixed  with  catching  agent on modulus  of  elasticity  was not significant,  while on other  particle- board properties   the  effect   was not  consistent.

Abstract

In  1983 Indonesian plywood    industries  consumed  about  45 000 tons  of  wheat flour  as an extender  of  ureaformaldehyde   adhesive. This material is imported from foreign  country,  although Indonesia,  as an agricultural country,  is rich with carbohydrate  resources such as palm trees. The result of a laboratory study on the effect of four wheat and sago flour  mixtures and four  levels of extender content on plywood  property is presented  in this paper. The mixtures of  wheat and sago flour  were 100/0, 80/20, 60/40, and 40/60. Each of them  was mixed  with the UF glue at four  different composition,   namely  I 5, 20, 25, and 30 percent  of each total glue weight. The experiment  was based on the 4 x 4 factorial  design  with. 4 replications. The result shows that the wheat and sago flour  mixture  does not significantly  affect  the glue shear as well as the wood failure.  The extender content on the other hand, affects significantly  the above properties,  in which higher extender content has resulted in lower plywood  quality.  The study  reveals also that all of the plywood  samples  tested conform  with the Indonesian  Standard  (Sil) for  plywood  type II.

Abstract

This experiment evaluate the use of mangrove (Rhizophora mucronata) bark powder mixed with paraformaldehyde as an adhesive in particleboard manufacturing.  The treatments consisted of powder size (100 and 140 mesh) and pressing temperature (110,125,  and 140° C).  The qualities observed were physical and mechanical properties of the boards. The effect of powder size on the properties of particleboard was negative. The effect of temperature on the properties of particleboard was on the other hand significant.  There is a linear correlation between temperature and each property of particleboard. Except Thickness Swelling, all properties conform with Particleboard Standard issued by FAO (1966), especially at temperature 125° C or above.
