Abstract

Worm infections often caused by worms transmitted through the soil (Soil-Transmitted Helminths). Types of STH worms include roundworms (Ascaris lumbricoides), whipworms (Trichuris trichiura) and hookworms (Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator Americanus). Worms commonly suffered by school-age children with the most aged between 5-14 years. Worms can affect the intake, digestion, absorption, and metabolism of food, which can result in loss of protein, carbohydrates, fats, and vitamins. Trichuris trichiura and hookworm can cause massive amounts of blood loss and decreased hemoglobin levels. This study aims to determine the relationship of Trichuris trichiura infection with hemoglobin levels in children in the village of East Serang Kilasah, Banten. This research is an analytic survey with a cross-sectional design with 42 respondents. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling. The results of the fecal examination by the Kato-Katz method found 23 children (54.76%) with mild worm levels and 19 children (45.24%) with moderate worm levels. The results of blood tests found 36 children (85.71%) with normal hemoglobin levels and six children (14.79%) with low hemoglobin levels. Based on the results of statistical tests, the results obtained P-value 0.004 (P-value

Abstract

Formalin is a preservative for faeces containing parasites. The formalin that frequently usedis formalin10% in distilled water, but it could also be dissolved in a 0.85% NaCl or sodiumphosphate buffer. The 0.85% NaCl serves to maintain the osmosic pressure of cell, while thebuffer solution serves to maintain the stability of pH of the solution. Purpose this research isto determine whether there are differences in the ability of 10% formalin dissolved indistilled water, 0.85% NaCl and sodium phosphate buffer in terms of maintaining themorphology of cell and prevent the development of Ascaris lumbricoides eggs. This is anexperiment research using the randomized posttest control group design. This research usingthree treatments, there are faeces added with formalin 10% in distilled water; 0.85% NaCl orsodium phosphate buffer; and control without adding the formalin 10%. Each treatmentconsists of 9 replication. Control and treatment groups are observed microscopically everyday. Based on the research. There is no difference in eggs cell morphology and developmentof Ascaris lumbricoides eggs in all treatments. According to Kruskal Wallis and MannWithney test, P count > 0.05 which means there is no significant difference in time needed byAscaris lumbricoides eggs to become infective in every treatment. Formalin 10% in varioussolvents is not effective as faeces preservatives, in particular to prevent the development ofAscaris lumbricoides eggs due to they have already developed in average of 10 days.

Abstract

Oplosan liquor is one form of illegal drink that is often found in police raids in various areas. The purpose of this study was to determine the ethanol and methanol levels in mixed liquor obtained from the results of the Sector Police raids in Cipayung District, East Jakarta, in 2017. This study was a cross-sectional descriptive study. Determination of ethanol and methanol levels is done by gas chromatography at the Daerah Khusus Ibukota Jakarta Health Laboratory. The sample in this study amounted to 14 samples. Based on the research obtained Ethanol content from test material (10.08-50.14)% v/v with an average (28,39±15,09)% v/v and methanol content is (0.08-2.04)% v / v with an average of (0,81±0,72)%v/v. Samples whose ethanol content is equivalent to alcoholic groups A, B, and C are 0%, six bottles (42.86%), and eight bottles (51.13%). All samples contained methanol with levels> 0.01% and were not packaged according to the requirements of the Regulation of the Indonesian Food and Drug Supervisory Agency No. 14/2016 (BPOM). It is suggested to do a follow-up in counseling related to mixed alcohol, especially for adolescents in this area. Further research is suggested to identify illegal drugs in the confiscated alcoholic drinks from this area. It is recommended to the Cipayung District Police to clean the area from mixed alcohol.

Abstract

Helminthiasis is an endemic and chronic disease that can cause malnutrition, stunted growth, intellectual retardation, and decreased cognitive abilities. In Indonesia, efforts to eradicate helminthiasis have been carried out through mass drug administration. This study aims to identify helminth infections after treatment with albendazole 400 mg in school children in Tebo district, Jambi province. The design of this study was an observational descriptive study by examining the feces of children who had been given treatment. Based on the results of the examination, it was found that worm infections were 16.7%, with details of 6.7% positive for Ascaris lumbricoides and 10% positive for Trichuris trichiura.

Abstract

The prevalence of intestinal nematode infection in Soil Transmitted Helminth (STH) is still high in Indonesia because the tropical climate and high rainfall greatly affect soil moisture as an important medium in its life cycle. One of the STH species is Ascaris lumbricoides which is transmitted through food contamination, especially raw vegetables. Eggs from Ascaris worms have resistance to strong acids, strong bases, oxidants, reductants, and surface-active agents. Ascaris lumbricoides eggs are resistant in 10% formalin dissolved in aquadest, NaCl 0.85%, and sodium phosphate. Ascaris lumbricoides eggs also have durability in 10% formalin solution which is heated at 60°C, 70°C and 80°C. This study aims to determine the resistance of Ascaris lumbricoides eggs to temperature and heating time. This research is expected to provide benefits in proving the temperature and heating time can affect the resistance of Ascaris lumbricoides eggs, so that it can provide certainty and a sense of security for the public that the heating process in food, especially vegetables can cause Ascaris lumbricoides eggs to be inactive. This research is a true experimental study with the design of The Randomized Posttest Control Group Design. The treatments used are heating temperatures 80°C, 90°C and 100°C for 10 minutes, 20 minutes, and 30 minutes. Based on the research, it was found that Ascaris lumbricoides eggs could not withstand heating 80°C, 90°C and 100°C for 10 minutes, 20 minutes, and 30 minutes. Suggestions in this study are to avoid Ascaris lumbricoides infection by increasing personal hygiene and always consuming foods, especially vegetables that have been heated for at least 80 ° C for 10 minutes.

Abstract

AbstractBackground Ascaris lumbricoides eggs had very thick walls consisted of three layers, they were albuminoid layer, hyaline layer and vitelin layer. These layers were impermeable causing the Ascaris lumbricoides eggs resistant to less supportive environmental factors. Formalin 10% was a preservative that was often used to preserve faeces containing parasites such as protozoa and worm eggs. However, without heating, formalin 10% was not effective to preserve the Ascaris lumbricoides eggs because they would keep developing to become infective (containing larvae). Objective This study aims to prove whether there is an effect of adding 10% formalin which is heated at 60 C, 70 C and 80 C to the development of Ascaris lumbricoides eggs. Methods The design of this research was an experimental study with The Randomized Posttest Control Group Design. Result The Ascaris lumbricoides eggs were still growing into infective eggs in faeces although they were heated by formalin 10% at 60C, 70C and 80C. conclusion Based on the results of the study, there was no effect of heating temperature of formalin 10% on the development of Ascaris lumbricoides egg. Keywords: Formalin 10%, Ascaris lumbricoides, Heating, Soil Transmitted Helminth
