Abstract

Pinus  merkusii   or locally   known  as Tusam,   is one of the plantation  species  extensively   cultiuated  in the uarious part of  Indonesia.    The  uses  of  its  wood  uary  from  chopstick   and  ice cream  spoon  to some  construction   item  such  as trans- mission pole,  and a possible  use of  its wood  for cooling  tower is still being studied. The paper  describes  study   result  of  the  effect  of  tree  age  and  position   within   tree  on  some  physical  properties   (Specific grauity,   moisture  content,   uolumetric  shrinkage   and fiber saturation  point).   The  results  were computed  using  the nested  or hierarchical  classification  analysis,  and  the differences   between  means  tested  using  Tukey's  w procedure. The  results  shows  that  the tree  age effect  significantly   the green and air-dry  specific gravity,   The other properties do not  seem  to  be affected. Between  tree differences   affect  significantly    the air-dry  moisture  content  only.  Height  within  tree does  affect  uery  significantly   the  uolumetric   shrinkage  from  green  to ouen dry  condition;  and from  air-dry  to ouen  dry condition.   The ouerall  mean and standard deviation  ualues for each  property   had been calculated  and  the  result  presented.

Abstract

The  results  of  strength   test  of  solid  and glue  laminated   timbers  represented   by  Kapur,  Teak  and  Red  Meranti  are reported  in this paper.  The method   used for  the  testing  was the  ASTM  D 143-1970.For  the purpose   of  the  test,  8 x  12 x  400  cm  lumbers  of  the  three species  were divided  into  two groups  being de- signated  respectively  for  test  in solid  and glue  laminated    form.   The  first  group  were tested  for modulus of rupture,  com- pression  parallel  to  the grain and shear strength  under  air dry  condition.  In  bending  tests,  two  methods  of  loading  were applied,  namely  perpendicular   and parallel  to  the  laminae   in case  of glue laminated   timbers,  and along radial or tangential direction  for solid timbers. The  second   group   were  resawn  further   into  0. 9  cm  and   1.  9 cm  thick    timber  strips,  respectioely,   for  small size tests  of  the  glue  laminated  specimens.    The  0.9  cm  thick  strips  which  were air-dried  and   then   glued  with   CIBA  Phenol resorcinol-formal-dehyde     adhesives,  were designated   for  test  on  modulus   of  rupture  and  compression.    The  1.9   cm   thick strips  were divided  further   into  five  batches,   and each of which  were dried respectively  until  25,  20,  15,  10 and  5 percent moisture   content   before   glueing  with  the  above   mentioned   adhesive   into  six  different  combination   of  test pieces  namely Teah-Meranti   (JM),   Teak-Kapur  (JK),  Meranti-Kapur    (MK),  Kapur-kapur   (KK),   Teak-Teak     (JJ) and  meranti-Meranti    (MM).The  results  of  the  tests  are presented   in  Table   1   and  2  for  modulus   of  rupture   and  compression  parallel  to  the grain;  and Tabel 3 and 4 respectively  for  the shear   tests of the six  lamination   combination.

Abstract

This paper presents results of laboratory study  on the rate of moisture  content  decrease of 19 timber species.  The test specimen from each species were subjected  to air drying under sheltered condition  (under roof) and drying in a dehumidifying chamber.  At the end of each test.  the defect of each specimen  was recorded, and the most appropriate form of relation between duration  of drying and moisture  content  decrease was sought. From data analysis it was shown that a power form of relationship (Y = aXb) was reasonable, with coefficient  of correlation values varying between  0.80-0.90.The result also shows  that the longest air drying time (from 60% to 20%  moisture  content)  was recorded by kayu besi (53 days) and the shortest  by dama-dama  and palapi  (18 days). As  has been anticipated,  drying  in the dehumidifier   has reduced  considerably  the time  required for  drying from 60% to 20% moisture content. For example for the three species mentioned  above  the figures  were 20 days for  kayu  besi and 5 days for  dama-dama  and palapi. The result shows further  that severe defect was observed in kolaka,  bugis, suling and belu itam.  The remaining species have either moderate or slight defect.
