Abstract

Lecturers have an important role in students academic achievement. There are a number of qualities and competences required by good lecturers. This research is conducted to find out students’ responses and  their expectations on English department lecturers’ competence . There are ninety students of English Department which are taken from the fourth, sixth and eighth semester students involved in this study. Questionnaire,  interview, and documentation are used to gather the data . The result showed that  students’ responses on English Department lecturers’ professional competence is in good catergory with mean score 4.1 and total percentage 82%. Meanwhile, students’ responses on English Department lecturers’ pedagogical competence is categorized as good with mean score 4.0 and total percentage 80%.  Most students expect that the lecturers come on time to the class. They also expect that the lecturers use interesting media in teaching and learning, select appropriate method and technique in teaching, and give more feedbacks to the students. They also hope their lectures provide much time for consultation.

Abstract

This study is aimed to determine how is the contribution of English Subject Teachers’ Working Group (MGMP) in developing teachers’ pedagogical competence and how the teachers perception on that contribution. The method used in this study was descriptive qualitative. The data was collected through interview and documentation. The subjects of this study were 9 teachers, they were the head, treasurer, and 7 members of the MGMP forum. The result showed that the English MGMP gave a good contribution to the development of teachers’ pedagogical competence. The contribution of the MGMP in developing teachers’ pedagogical competence was carried out through the involvement of various parties and MGMP programs itself. In every activity, MGMP usually presented external speakers such as lecturers from several universities. Besides, the result of this study also showed that the English teachers gave a positive perception on the contribution of MGMP in developing teachers’ pedagogical competence. The teachers considered that the MGMP as a community gave a big contribution in develoving their competence. Through MGMP activities, the teachers discussed to solve the problems they faced, communicated each other, and exchanged experiences.

Abstract

This study aims at describing code switching found in Indonesian email users among Indonesian speakers living in Australia with a specific setting in Ramadan and Idul Fitri. It focuses on the analysis of the types, the functions and the reasons why Indonesian students in Australia switch their language. The research problems are what types of code switching  Indonesian writers use,  the functions of code switching used by Indonesian writers and why Indonesian writers use these particular code switching.   This study is expected to make some useful contributions the study of written code switching which had little research to date. Another benefit is that, this study gives an insight into how language competence develops under second language environmental influence. Moreover, this might lead to a better understanding of the use of code switching, especially in the emerging genre of Internet communication.

Abstract

Reading is an essential skill for ESL/FL learners because it is a readily available way to expose to language learners’ target language. The ability to read in a foreign language is needed as the learners have specific needs for information and pleasure, for their career and for study purposes. Good reading texts provide a number of educational objectives and can bring in interesting topics, stimulate discussion, debate and motivate imaginative responses and can be the springboard  for fascinating lessons.  This study provides a framework for a series of key principles for developing reading skills and explain how these principles can be applied in the ESL/FL classroom.

Abstract

During online and offline teaching learning, teachers need to be ready and consider certain aspects in order to teach effectively and get the best results for the students. This research was aimed to know the English teachers’ readiness in terms of materials development, lesson planning, and teaching skills in online and offline teaching and learning. This study adopted embedded mixed research design that utilized closed-ended questionnaires and interview as instruments for data collection. There were 72 English teachers from Junior and Senior high schools (SMP, MTS, SMA, SMK, and MA) around South Kalimantan as the subject of the research. The result showed that most of the English teachers were ready in developing materials, lesson plan, and teaching skills. They were familiar with the types, the objectives, the principles and the stages in developing materials. In preparing lesson plan, they consider cognitive, affective, and psychomotor aspects, basic competencies, instructional media, character education, literacy 4 C's and HOTS skills activities, learning sources, and assessment. In applying teaching skills, the teachers did some adaptations and improvements by using a variation of online and offline applications in teaching.

Abstract

Teaching writing online can be more challenging for teachers. Guided questions and answers is one of the teaching techniques used as a form of guidance from the teacher to their students in making a good paragraph. This study was conducted at MAN 3 Barito Kuala with the objectives to explore the implementation of guided questions and answers in paragraph writing through online learning and describe students' perceptions about it. This descriptive qualitative design was used to get a rich description of the results. To collect the data, observation, interview, and documentation were used as the instruments. The results showed that the teacher could implement guided question and answer well. Using WhatsApp as a digital device, the teacher completely applied the teaching stages from giving explanations to providing feedback for the students. Moreover, students' perception of the implementation of guided questions and answers through online learning was positive. Students agreed that the guided questions and answers technique through online learning could help them in writing a good paragraph. Abstract

Limbah tandan kosong kelapa sawit (TKKS) merupakan limbah padat terbesar dari pengolahan pabrik kelapa sawit. Limbah TKKS yang semakin meningkat jumlahnya menjadi ancaman serius terhadap lingkungan. Selain mengeluarkan bau yang tidak sedap dan mengganggu kualitas udara, limbah ini juga memiliki potensi untuk merusak ekosistem jika tidak dikelola dengan baik. maka diperlukan suatu upaya untuk memperkenalkan usulan program tim pengabdian masyarakat yaitu berupa penyuluhan pembuatan pupuk organik dari limbah TKKS sebagai usaha memberdayakan masyarakat di Desa Sempulang Kecamatan Tanah Grogot Kabupaten Paser. Dengan pelatihan ini, diharapkan masyarakat dapat mengelola limbah tersebut secara mandiri dan berkelanjutan, serta memanfaatkannya dengan baik untuk keperluan pertanian. kegiatan penyuluhan ini adalah antusias para peserta yang sangat baik dalam merespon kegiatan penyuluhan pembuatan pupuk organik dari Tandan Kosong Kelapa Sawit (TKKS). Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa para peserta ini tertarik untuk menerima ilmu yang disampaikan,dan ingin mencoba mengaplikasikan pembuatan pupuk organik tersebut di rumahnya masing-masing.

Abstract

Classroom instruction involves how teachers deliver lessons, engage students, and convey information and also involves pedagogical considerations to support students' learning. This study investigates the instructional practices employed by English Language Teacher Training (ELTT) teachers in South Kalimantan. Through a mixed-method sequential explanatory design encompassing depth semi structured interview and non-participant classroom observation, the study explores 19 ELTT Madrasah teachers in South Kalimantan. The findings shed light on the teachers' ways in giving instruction such as the preparation before the instructions, teachers write the instruction for developing lesson plan, arrange the classroom and grouping the students, getting students' attention and communicating lesson goals, the time for instruction, language choices, classroom activities, modelling the activities, using extra-linguistics devices, checking students' understanding and monitoring students' activities. ELTT Program also shape the instructional practices of teachers in terms of their preparation, the use of more English as a medium of instruction, their engagement with technology, their confidence and creativity, and more students’ participation. This study contributes valuable insights to the realm of language education, offering implications for teacher development and improved student outcomes in South Kalimantan.
