Abstract

This study is aimed to determine how is the contribution of English Subject Teachers’ Working Group (MGMP) in developing teachers’ pedagogical competence and how the teachers perception on that contribution. The method used in this study was descriptive qualitative. The data was collected through interview and documentation. The subjects of this study were 9 teachers, they were the head, treasurer, and 7 members of the MGMP forum. The result showed that the English MGMP gave a good contribution to the development of teachers’ pedagogical competence. The contribution of the MGMP in developing teachers’ pedagogical competence was carried out through the involvement of various parties and MGMP programs itself. In every activity, MGMP usually presented external speakers such as lecturers from several universities. Besides, the result of this study also showed that the English teachers gave a positive perception on the contribution of MGMP in developing teachers’ pedagogical competence. The teachers considered that the MGMP as a community gave a big contribution in develoving their competence. Through MGMP activities, the teachers discussed to solve the problems they faced, communicated each other, and exchanged experiences.

Abstract

This research describes how to teach translation using English poetry and applaying on the translation process by ESL college level students. It analyzes and codes the characteristics of their writing as well as the experiences and information reported in their reflective essays about the translation process. Poetry translation is discussed to honor the origin languange and corresponding culture and as a way to facilitate writing skill development for college students. The final project makes recommendations for future poetry translation assignments for college level with different topic and sources.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to describe: 1) The character of Lear in Shakespeare’s King Lear, 2) How Lear gains the regeneration and self education about his environment, 3) Assessing the divine dispensation in Lear’s tragedy. This research is qualitative method. Qualitative method is a research procedure that results in description data in the form of words. The data of this research is King Lear a play by Shakespeare. This research used intrinsic approach. Technique of collecting data is used by reading the play and analyzing the play. The technique of analyzing data is using content analysis of three elements, which are reading the data, presenting data and analyzing. Based on the result of the research can be concluded: 1) Lear’s character win the initial play was arrogant, self-deceived, and powerful. 2) Lear struggles to gain the education of his environment must undergo several predicaments in his life including betrayal by his own daughter, expelled from his kingdom, going madness and exposed through the storm. 3)

Abstract

To address three theories in teaching English for young learners (Piaget, Vygotsky, and Brunner), the researchers believe that an effective teaching teachniques that pay attention not only to the needs of the young learners but also to their interests are very important. This research reported our pre-experimental study on the effectiveness of using Piaget, Vygotsky, and Brunner theories in teaching English for young learners at SDN Kebun Bunga 6 Banjarmasin. There were 26 students of the fourth grade, study English at SDN Kebun Bunga 6 Banjarmasin, participated in this research. The data collected by conducting three times treatment in one class of the fourth grade, and written tests (pre-test and post-test). Findings revealed that the students got better score after the implementation of those three theories (Piaget, Vygotsky, and Brunner) in the classroom; they were very enthusiastic learned English in the classroom by interacting with the teachers and the peers. Their responses toward this activity were also positive. This research is expected to be beneficial for teachers who are interested in applying those three theories in English classroom, especially for young learners’ classroom.

Abstract

During online and offline teaching learning, teachers need to be ready and consider certain aspects in order to teach effectively and get the best results for the students. This research was aimed to know the English teachers’ readiness in terms of materials development, lesson planning, and teaching skills in online and offline teaching and learning. This study adopted embedded mixed research design that utilized closed-ended questionnaires and interview as instruments for data collection. There were 72 English teachers from Junior and Senior high schools (SMP, MTS, SMA, SMK, and MA) around South Kalimantan as the subject of the research. The result showed that most of the English teachers were ready in developing materials, lesson plan, and teaching skills. They were familiar with the types, the objectives, the principles and the stages in developing materials. In preparing lesson plan, they consider cognitive, affective, and psychomotor aspects, basic competencies, instructional media, character education, literacy 4 C's and HOTS skills activities, learning sources, and assessment. In applying teaching skills, the teachers did some adaptations and improvements by using a variation of online and offline applications in teaching.

Abstract

Language of a child continue to develop in accordance with stimulus from the surrounding environment particularly families (parents), teachers and community. This study aims to identify speech delay in terms of efforts of parents in stimulating their child by using a case study approach. Early intervention of the parents is critical for children with speech and language delays, as it can prevent further developmental delays and improve their communication skills. Parents play a crucial role in their child's language development and can make a significant difference by providing a supportive and stimulating environment for their child to learn and practice language skills. The participants in this study were child and parents and the data were collected through observation and interview. The results of this study indicated that the type of speech delay found were speech and language expressive disorder. The factors which contribute to speech delay are the lack of parental stimulation, the use of gadgets, the type of program the child watch on his gadget and the use of language in the program he watched. The study also discussed the efforts made by parents in stimulating child's language development including changing the style of communication (speaking softly and repetitively, not responding if only pointing or giving gestures when asked to respond, always involving child in speaking, changing the type of questions from YES/NO to WH questions), reading story before going to bed and asking child to respond by various questions, inviting child to play, always giving a picture book and color pencil and asking the child's work, and inviting child to therapy to a pediatrician on a regular basis once a week for 1 hour.

Abstract

Learning a new language encompasses various skills, including writing, reading, speaking, and listening. Developing listening comprehension abilities can be particularly challenging and requires consistent practice. An effective approach to improving listening skills is through exposure to audio storytelling. However, language learners often struggle to locate suitable content for this purpose. This study aims to identify and analyze audio storytelling resources available on the Spotify platform, specifically accessible to students. The analysis of these resources will facilitate a better understanding of their content and provide opportunities for practicing listening comprehension.The research adopts a qualitative approach, utilizing a content analysis method to evaluate the available content on Spotify. The researcher explored the platform to identify audio storytelling content and assess their potential for enhancing listening abilities. Factors such as content types, popularity, difficulty levels, and activity rates were considered during the analysis.The findings revealed three prominent channels on Spotify that specialize in audio storytelling content. These channels are popular among Spotify users, actively upload new content at least once a week, and offer content with varying difficulty levels. Each channel contains a rich collection of audio stories, encompassing grammatical and vocabulary aspects tailored to different difficulty levels, along with opportunities for exploring diverse cultures

Abstract

In recent years, the utilization of artificial intelligence-powered tools in education has witnessed a significant surge. These tools offer invaluable assistance to teachers in classroom preparation and learners seeking to enhance their English language proficiency. With their considerable potential, AI-powered tools provide an affordable, effective, and efficient approach to teaching and learning. This research focuses on analyzing AI-powered tools that facilitate the reading process. Employing a qualitative research design with content analysis as the primary methodology and documentation as the technique, this study delves into the examination of selected AI-powered tools to aid in the reading process. The findings underscore the benefits and advantages of these tools when aligned with the various stages of the reading process. Specifically, ChatGPT emerges as beneficial for the pre-reading stage, while Quillbot and Paraphraser.io prove advantageous during reading. Post-reading activities can be facilitated by tools such as ChatGPT and Storywiz.io. In conclusion, based on the outcomes, the research recommends the utilization of the aforementioned AI-powered tools to enhance the reading process.

Abstract

In online learning, teachers use a number of support strategies to engage learners. The right strategies at the right time  make distance learning effective and keep students engaged. The purpose of the research is to find out the strategies that teachers use to maintain performance in English language learners during the pandemic, and to find  the most appropriate strategy that teachers use to maintain performance in English language courses during the pandemic. The researchers used descriptive qualitative research to examine the  strategies of teachers in online English lessons in this study. It explains the teaching strategies used in MTs Negeri 1 Banjarmasin and the participants were three English teachers which teach on VII A, VII B, and VII C. The researchers uses two techniques to collect data. There are observations and interviews. Observations were made in Online Class VII (A, B and C)  MTs Negeri 1 Banjarmasin. The interview was then conducted face-to-face with three English teachers. The results showed that the teacher's strategy in teaching  VII grade students (A, B and C), the researchers concluded that  six active learning strategies were used in the online learning of the three participating teachers. Learning strategies include discussion, problem solving, brainstorming, peer teaching, case studies and discussions. The researchers also found that  three teachers preferred to use the conversational strategy because that strategy is very easy for teachers to implement, especially in class VII, where that strategy has become the most suitable strategy for teaching English in online learning.

Abstract

This qualitative study investigates the use of multimodality in teaching reading to junior high school students at SMPN 1 Pulau Laut Tengah Kotabaru. Multimodality refers to the integration of various modes, such as images, sound, and writing, to convey meaning and enhance the learning process. The research involves one English teachers and 24 eighth-grade students as participants. The researchers used Descriptive qualitative as the research methods. In addition, observation, interviews, and documentation were utilized as data collection instruments. The findings reveal that teachers frequently employ multimodality, particularly in English reading lessons, utilizing a combination of digital and printed resources such as videos and images to engage students actively in the learning process. The application of multimodality in teaching reading yielded positive responses from students, fostering enthusiasm and improving their participation in learning activities.
