Abstract

Abstract: Problems of peace and war continues to be debated in theological and moral traditions of Christianity. This paper tries to pick two points. First, the Christian view of peace and war. In the Christian view of peace (peace) is indispensable to justice (justice) and include the dimensions (inner peace) or a spiritual dimension(spiritual peace). This understanding is different from a more secular outlook mean peace at the level of exteriordimensions (outer dimension). Secondly, this paper contradict two major traditions in Christianity regarding theplace of Christians in the war and their obligation to participate. The tradition of pacifism which Christians aregenerally held before St . Agustine, argues that Jesus forbade Christians at all involved in the war or arms. Thistradition believes that peace is achieved only through peaceful means. Conversely, Just War tradition that wasdeveloped by St . Augustine considered that Christians are obliged to participate in the war when the purpose ofwar is to bring peace and uphold justice. St.Augustine in two main principles that must be met, namely Jus AdBellum ( Justice of War ) and Jus in Bello ( Justice in War ) .Keywords : Peace, War, Pacifism, Just War, Christians

Abstract

Abstract: Augustine, one of the greatest christian thinkers, tries to reconcile the love of neighborsand justification of wars. He develops a radically different biblical interpretation than those of earlyChurch Fathers who believe in incompatibility of Jesuss central teaching of loving neighbour andChristian participation in warfare. Augustine repudiates such incompatibility. This paper investigatesthe teaching of Augustines just war teaching formulated in his masterpiece The City of God. In thelight of this tradition, this paper specifically adresses the intentions and the primary motive of the justwar. This paper argues that both the intentions and motive have to be distinctive. Accordingly, war isjustified if it meets two distinctive conditions. First, the goal of the war is to bring peace, restorejustice, and and punish wrong doers. Second, the war should be based on Christian charity or love ofneighbours. This paper begins by introducing the core issue of Christian understanding of its positionon warfare, followed by brief profile of Augustine. Then, it addresses Augustines interpretation ofJesus teaching and finally it analyses Augustines just war teaching by focusing on intentions andmotive. Two cases, NATO Interventions in Kosovo 1999 and Libya 2011, are also included to illustratethe principle of Right Intention and Motive. It argues that NATO interventions meet the conditions ofRight Intention but fail in the principle of Right Motive.Key Words: Augustine, Just War, Love, Justice, Intentions, Motive

Abstract

European financial crisis poses a serious challenge to the fundamental structure of the European Union, political and financial institutions, as well as the values that bind European together. Different factors have been suggested as the causes of the crisis notably the failure of national government and economic policies. Responding to the crisis, numerous attemps have been proposed to accelerate the recovery, but the crisis still hit Eurozone and brought serious consequences politically and economically. In one side, the crisis severely damages some EU member economy but on the other side, the crisis advantages the other members. Such an inequality not only leads to the crisis but also exacerbate the crisis. Having said that, this paper will demonstrate that marxian conceptual model of inequality or constructed economic imbalance provides a better explanation regarding the causes ofthe crisis. Using marxist theoretical framework, this article will further show that introduction of Euro, the accumulation of profit and capital as well as the current European financial system built upon the spirit of capitalism and neoliberalism as the key factors contributing to the crisis and creating inequality.

China’s Rise and its Implications for Australian Foreign Policy Petrus K. Farneubun

Abstract

This article places a particular emphasis on the rise of China and its implications for Australian foreign policy. It qualitatively examines the perceptions of China’s rise, its intentions, and the Australian responses, based on government and international organisation reports, and secondary sources such as books, journals, and media articles. Using realism as a theoretical lens, this article argues that Australia’s foreign policy still reflects an ambiguity, as a result of, on the one hand, the economic opportunities China creates, and on the other hand, uncertainty regarding China’s intentions, whether offensive or defensive, peaceful or aggressive. Facing this condition, this article demonstrates that Australia adopts several important policy strategies. First, it maintains a hedging strategy to balance its economic interests and its security concern. Second, Australia continues to rely on the protection of the US. In the long-term, however, this reliance may be changed. For this reason, Australia needs to increase its own military capability. This article concludes that Australian foreign policy will likely remain ambivalent in its response to the rise of China.KEYWORDSAustralia; China’s Rise; Foreign Policy; Military Capability; Power Shift

Abstract

Indonesia guarantees the right of every child to enjoy protection from the state, including protection from sexual and economic exploitation that threatens their lives. This study attempts to assess the implementation, the impacts, and the challenges of the WVI child empowerment program from the time it was first introduced in Yahim village in 2018 to the year 2021. A qualitative method is used in this study in conjunction with a descriptive approach to explain the topic. Primary sources, such as interviews, field notes, personal documents, and other official documents, as well as secondary sources, such as books, journals, and media articles, are also used in this study. This article shows that WVI implemented the programs successfully, despite facing some external challenges. The program has had some impacts, including a decrease in cases of violence against children, an increase in children’s interest in literacy and gender equality, and children’s activeness in expressing their voices about their rights. A key conclusion is that providing children with access to empowerment programs should be sustained as it will result in better long-term outcomes. Hence, WVI and other humanitarian organizations need to expand similar programs to other villages/ communities. KEYWORDS Children’s rights; Empowerment; WVI; Yahim
