Abstract

The superiority of Acacia hybrid (A. mangium x A. auriculiformis) compared to the parent    trees as fast growth, straight bole, ligth branching, more tolerance to pest and desease and had better wood properties. In order to maintain the superiority, it should be propagated vegetatively. However, the propagation potential of Acacia spp usually decreased by increasing the age of plant (aging effect). To prevent the aging effect on Acacia hybrid, vegetative propagation of selected trees should be done before becoming too old. This study was aimed to observe morphological seedling characteristics of Acacia hybrid. The result showed that morphological seedling characteristics of Acacia hybrid were intermediate between the parents species. The development of leaves pattern was well-marked by absence of 4-pinnates leaves or number of pinnates leaves was between 4-6. In addition, the pubescence was present on the margin of pinnates and the number of main vein on phyllode were mostly 3.

Abstract

Forty four clones of Acacia hybrid  propagated from selected stoolplants were tested together with a control of pure species seedling and clone in a clonal test established at Wonogiri, Central Java. The design of clonal test was Incomplete Block Design, which was laid-out as single treeplot of 20 replications with spacing of 3 m x 3 m. Measurements of tree height were conducted at age 12 months. There were significant differences between the clones in height growth. Eleven clones of 44 were more superior than the original population at SSO F1 (Control 4th) which superiority ranging from 1.81-35.35 % and 3 of them were more superior than the pure species (control 1th, control 2th and control 3th) which superiority ranging from 3.51 – 17.28%. Meanhile, clone repeatability for height at age 12 months was, while individual repeatability for height was 0.59 +- 0.1

Abstract

Nine clones of Eucalyptus pellita F. Muell propagated from selected plus trees in the first-generation seedling seed orchard were tested together with a control of seedling in a clonal test established at Wonogiri, Central Java. The design of clonal test was Randomized Complete Block, which was laid-out as single treeplot of 16 replications with spacing of 3 m x 2 m. Measurements of tree height were conducted at age 12 months. There were significant differences between the clones in height growth. All tested clones showed better tree height than the control of seedling with superiority ranging from 42% to165%. Almost all clones also showed better performance than their original population of the first-generation seedling seed orchard. Clone repeatability for height at age 12 months was 0.90, while individual repeatability for height was 0.38. The top three clones were clones 1 and 3  which propagated from selected plus trees in first generation seedling seed orchard and clone 2 which is selected tree in border of A. mangium seed orchard.

Abstract

The first generation of Acacia hybrid between A. mangium and A. auriculiformis potential to be developed for plantation because of its superiority. The superiority of hibrid Acacia were fast growth, straight bole, light branching, more tolerant to pest/disease attack and better wood property than the parent trees. The only way to maintain their superiority is to propagate it vegetatively. The objective of the research was to observed characteristics of hibrid Acacia based on seed viability, sprouting and rooting ability. Materials used in this study were collected seed from control pollination at breeding garden which verified by molecular marker. The result showed that the character of seed viability on hybrid Acacia was still low (48.1%) meanwhile the sprouting and rooting ability were 16.5 ± 0.7 shoots and 78,4% respectively.

Abstract

Along with the increase of forest plantation development to supply raw material for industry, the utilization of marginal land with high salinity is likely to be an alternative for the plantation of A. mangium. In an effort to increase the improvement of A. mangium to be extensively planted on the widely alternative land, breeding programs were conducted to get trees of A. mangium which are tolerant to environmental stress, such as salt stress. The purpose of this study was to observe the anatomical response of A. mangium collected from several seed sources to salinity stress as a basis for salt tolerance breeding program. The trial consisted of four seed sources arranged in Completely Randomized Design with four level salt stresses(0; 22; 26 and 30 g/l) and 3 replications. The four tested seed sources are two seedling seed orchard (SSO) originated from Papua New Guinea provenance (namely group A and B), one SSO originated from Far North Queensland provenance (group C) and one SSO originated from a combining both provenances (group E). The treatment is given by  watering the seedlings from each provenance with saline solution in accordance with a predetermined concentration of 200 ml per day for 4 months. The observed parameters were stomatal index, length dan width of stomata, number and diameter of trachea, and chlorophyll content. The results showed that in general the differences in salt co ncentration provided a significant effect on anatomical response of A. mangium. Except for the length of stomata, seed source variations were significantly different for all parameters. Meanwhile, seed sources x salt level  interaction did not significantly affect the length and width of stomata. The higher the salt concentration, the lower the stomatal index and chlorophyll content. Conversely, the higher the salt concentration, the higher the amount of the tracheid. However the differences in salt concentration did not give a significant effect on diameter of tracheid. Overall, among the four tested seed sources, group B which is originated from Papua New Guinea provenancewas found to be the most tolerant seed sources to salt stress.

Abstract

Red jabon is one of the fast growing species. It is growth well in tropical countries. It has a potential to fulfill the demand of wood. Tree imrovement program of this species has been done in Indonesia. However, information of wood properties related to tree improvement program of red jabon is limited. Therefore, wood properties such as physical and mechanical properties of this species at the progeny trial were needed to clarify. The aims of this research were to clarify the variation of physical and mechanical properties of red jabon from 5 families at5-year-old planted in Wonogiri, Central Java and relationship between air-dry density and mechanical properties. As the result, physical and mechanical properties were varied among 5 families. Based on the results, famili number 85 performed good result of physical and mechanical characteristics, eventhough the physical properties were not highest among 5 families but it was abouf the average value. Furthermore, this family showed the best values of all mechanichal characteristics tested. In addition, air-dry density has highly positive significantcorrelation with mechanical properties (static bending strength and compressive strength parallel to grain), suggesting that mechanical properties can be predicted by air-dried density.
