Abstract

As stated above, one of T2IM's main objectives is to provide information and data as complete as possible concerning Indonesian religious manuscripts. In order to achieve this target, T2IM needs to be systematically improved. Until now, Indonesian manuscripts are largely kept in private and public institutions including libraries, museums, and foundations, both in Indonesia and abroad. Some manuscripts collections have been catalogued, however, most of them have not. Initially, T2IM will draw upon printed catalogues as well as other lists of manuscripts and on other documentation. All publications containing lists of Indonesian religious manuscripts, whether they provide complete information or only titles, will be included in T2IM's database.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v16i3.479

Abstract

Book Review: Azyumardi Azra, The Origins of Islamic Reformism in Southeast Asia: Networks of Malay-Indonesian and Middle Eastern 'Ulama' in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries, Australia: Allen & Unwin, 2004, ix + 254 pagesThis book attentpts to enrich and -in a number of important ways- also to revise this nomenclature of "Islamic reformism". Taking modernism as its starting point, this book explains Islamic reformism by tracing the historical path of the important concept of shari'ah in the religious thoughts and practices of Muslim's, and how it became the dominant discourse. This concept was voiced by prominent Indonesian 'ulama' in the 17th and l818 centuries. More importantly, this concept emerged parallel to their intellectual contact with the Haramayn 'ulama'(in Mecca and Medina), which gave rise to the process of Islamic transmission through a complex network of student-teacher relationships. Abstract

The article looks at the dynamics and developments in Neo-Sufist teachings from the 19th century until the mid-20th century, using the Shattariyyah order in West Sumatra as a case study. Along with looking at the spread of the Shattariyyah order in West Sumatra by way of Shaikh Burhanuddin Ulakan, a key figure in the order, this discussion will also focus on how Shattariyyah spread in this region, what changes took place in terms of the teachings of neo-Sufism, especially during the later period (19th and 20th centuries), and the nature of the Shattariyyah teacher- student silsilah (genealogy) in West Sumatra.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v10i3.623

Abstract

The present article is a philological study of one of the most important works of lbrahim al-Kurani, written in Malay-Indonesian context, that is Ithaf al-Zaki bi Sharh al-Tuhfah al-Mursalah Ila Ruh al- Nabi. Looking at the title, one can see that Ithaf al-Zaki -two of the manuscripts of which were found in the library of Dar al-Kutub al-Misriyyah, Cairo- is a commentary of the Tuhfah al-Mursalah Ila Ruh al-Nabi of al-Burhanpuri. As is mentioned above, this particular work of al-Burhanpuri had raise controversy not only among the Malay-Indonesian Muslim scholars, but also in the Muslim world in general.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v9i1.676

Abstract

In the context of Islamic studies, the Malay-Indonesia region has for along time been the focus of attention of historians and researchers. There are many things that have generated interest in Islam in this region, particularly, amongst others, the unique qualities of this 'localized' Islam and the differences between these and those of Islam in other areas, in particular, in the Middle East. Abstract

The book attempts to explain the dynamics of the Islamic education system in Patani, Thailand, from its beginning up to the time when the Malay world, to which Patani belongs, was modernized. A comparison of Islamic education in Patani, with that which exists in other areas such as Indonesia and Malaysa, is complicated, but this is the very reason why it is so interesting. In the context of education, Islam-including the Islam developed in Malay-Patani areas-has played a significant, even a dominant, role. It is the driving force behind the establishment, the development, and the enforcement of educational institutions. Here pondok, pesantren, meunasah, surau and other traditional institutions of education must be mentioned for-in the Malay-Nusantara context they have been instrumental in the whole intellectual renaissance in the region. Rich Islamic traditions were studied and socialized intensively in those institutions and this, in turn, enabled the local ulamas to produce important works in the field of Islamic studies.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v8i1.699

Abstract

Ronit Ricci. 2019. Banishment and Belonging: Exile and Diaspora in Sarandib, Lanka, and Ceylon. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press.This essay reviews a book that explores Sri Lanka, one of the historical destinations of colonial exile, with a focus on the literary traditions of the Malay people, particularly Muslims. By using manuscripts written by exiles as the primary source, this work emphasizes contextual studies on dimensions of humanity and culture (manuscript cultures) to explain the experiences of exiles in the formation of the diaspora tradition of the Malay Muslim community. These sources prove that despite being forced to leave their homeland, the exiles were able to construct a religious paradigm that granted them the ability to deal with these political consequences while somehow countering the colonialists’ narratives. Therefore, this book suggests that due to the significant influence of Malay, particularly Islam, this region cannot be disregarded on the map of Southeast Asian Islamic studies. Additionally, this work implies that the concept of “Malay” is not only limited to a region of Southeast Asia today but also includes other regions with a history and culture of producing Malay manuscripts, such as Sri Lanka.

Abstract

Almost everybody who knew him is convinced that Azyumardi Azra, CBE has left us much too early. This Professor in History at the Faculty of Adab and Humaniora at the State Islamic University Syarif Hidayatullah in Jakarta passed away on 18 September 2022 in a hospital in Serdang, Selangor, Malaysia. Inna lillāhi wa inna ilaihi rāji‘un.Two days earlier, Professor Azra suffered from health issues while traveling by airplane to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He was not on his way for holiday purposes after travel restrictions had finally been lifted after the pandemic. Rather, he was invited by the Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia (ABIM) to speak at an international seminar about “Cosmopolitan Islam, Inspiring Awareness, Exploring the Future” at the Bangi Avenue Convention Centre (BACC), in Kajang, Malaysia.Azra was widely known as an extremely prolific Indonesian Muslim intellectual who was active in many scholarly forums in Indonesia and in the world at large. Some of his colleagues indeed saw him as a wandering intellectual much like Ibnu Batutah. He devoted most of his time and dedication to the study of Indonesian and Southeast Asian Islam and he was one of the most brilliant Islamic intellectuals of the century in this field.

Abstract

This article is a critical review of Peacock's book on “Arabic Literary Culture in Southeast Asia in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries”. The book reflects the author's attention to the marginalization of the Arabic texts that are composed in the 17th and 18th century Southeast Asia, or for a Southeast Asian audience, and the Arabic texts that were read and copied in the region. Peacock based his analysis on a corpus of Arabic manuscripts in Southeast Asia from different collections in Banten, Jakarta National Library, and others. Peacock argues that in term of Islamic studies, scholars should not regard Southeast Asian Islam as peripheral, regardless its geographical position remotely from the Middle East. One of Peacock’s important arguments is that the royal court became the major centre for the writing and reading of an indigenous Southeast Asian Arabic literature before nineteenth century.
