Abstract

Background: Elderly are often considered as a burden because of their physical limitations. Reduced cognitive function is one of the important causes for this physical limitation. Quality of sleep used to be associated with changes in cognitive function. Methods: A comparative analytic research to assess insomnia as a risk factor for the incidence of cognitive function impairment in the elderly. A case control study in elderly community at the nursing home St.Yosef, Surabaya. Result: Fifty respondents were taken by consecutive sampling and meeting the inclusion criteria. This study also excluded people with depression, schizophrenia, and users of psychotropic drugs. Eighty four percent of respondents with impaired cognitive function. Not much difference in percentage of insomnia disturbance in control group (37,5%) and case group (35,8%). Fisher's Exact Test show Sig.0,609 and OR=0.926 on CI [(0,194),(4,425)]. Conclusion: It was concluded that insomnia alone was not a risk factor for impaired cognitive modalities. Elderly exposed to sleep disorders have the same tendency to suffer cognitive impairment with unexposed.

Abstract

Background: In the elderly, there are anatomical, physiological, and psychological changes that can result in reduced sleep time in the elderly, and are thought to affect the quality of life of the elderly. Objective: This study aimed to determine the relationship between sleep time and quality of life in the elderly. Methods: This study used an observational analytic method with a cross-sectional approach. The sample in this study was 35 elderly people in East Manding Village. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling by determining the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The tool used is the WHOQOL-BREF test to measure the quality of life of the elderly and uses the sleep time provisions from the Ministry of Health (Ministry of Health) to measure sleep time in the elderly. Results: Data analysis used a contingency correlation test with a significance value of p<0.05. The correlation between sleep time and quality of life in the physical condition domain was positive, moderate, significant (r = 0.508 with p = 0.000); with the domain of psychological condition is positive, moderate strength, significant (r = 0.408 with p = 0.03); with the environmental factor domain being positive, moderate in strength, significant (r = 0.510 with p = 0.002); while in the domain of social relations there is no significant correlation. Conclusion: Sleep time is positively, moderately, and significantly correlated with quality of life in the domains of physical conditions, psychological conditions, and environmental factors. This means that the higher the sleep time, the better the quality of life in physical, psychological, and environmental conditions. These findings contribute to science and health promotion in geriatrics for the welfare of the elderly.

Abstract

Background: With the COVID-19 pandemic that’s currently happening, the Indonesian government made a policy called Pembatasan Sosial Berskala Besar (PSBB) to prevent the transmission of the COVID-19 virus. As a result of this new policy there was a change in the lives of Indonesians, like restrictions and a decrease in their social activities. The elderly are individuals who experiences a decline in various body function, which causes decreased social activities, and due to the reduction of their social activities, they’re potentially to experience depression due to feeling isolated and lonely. With this PSBB policy, the elderly whose social activities have already decreased, will potentially experience a more and massive reduction in their activities, and because of that the potential for depression will likely to increase. Objective: To determine the correlation between social activity level with depression in elderly during the COVID-19 pandemic.METHOD: The design of this research is observational analysis using a cross sectional method. The data were collected using the Australian Community Participation Questionnaire (ACPQ) and Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). Statistical analysis test used in this research was Spearman correlation test.RESULTS: Social activities of the elderly in the moderate category were 47.2% and elderly who are not depressed were 81,5%. The results from the Spearman test were found to have a significant correlation between the two variables, p value = < 0.05. The correlation level from the test was -0.335 which indicates a low correlation level.CONCLUSION: There is a significant correlation that has a negative value, so it can be concluded that if social activity level is high, then the incidence of depression is low or non-existent. Abstract

Background: The World Health Organization (WHO) stated that obesity is a world epidemic. According to basic health research in 2018, the prevalence of central obesity in the population aged 15 years in Kediri Regency/City has a higher prevalence compared to the average prevalence in East Java Province. The waist hip circumference ratio is one of the anthropometric calculations that can be used to assess central obesity. The  high prevalence of central obesity in Indonesia is closely related to the incidence of non-communicable diseases, including diabetes mellitus. However, only 25% of people with diabetes mellitus know that they have diabetes. Routine blood sugar checks for residents in districts/cities, especially in the city of Kediri, are also at a low level of 3.6%, so this is the reason for conducting this study. Objective: To study the correlation between waist hip circumference ratio with fasting blood glucose concentration at the age of 30-65 years in the District of Kediri.Method: Cross sectional observational analytical research approach. Sampling using consecutive sampling. Testing the correlation between two variables using the Spearman correlation test. The correlation between variables is considered significant if the p value <0.05 is obtained.Result: This research was conducted in Sonorejo Village, Grogol District, Kediri Regency, East Java on August 10 – August 12, 2021. Otained 40 respondents with an age range of 30-65 years. The correlation between waist hip circumference ratio with fasting blood glucose consentration was not statistically significant (p=0,453). The correlation value of 0.122 indicates a very weak correlation strength and is not clinically significant. Conclusion: There is no correlation between waist hip circumference ratio with fasting blood glucose concentration at the age of 30-65 years in the District of Kediri. Keywords:Waist hip circumference ratio, fasting blood glucose, Kediri.
