Abstract

The issuance of non-binding advisory opinions (fatwa) is always followed by the presence of new issues related to the implementation of the fatwa. Similarly, the smoking ruling was issued by the Council of Indonesian Scholars (MUI) at the Conference in Padang Panjang in 2009. More than a decade this subject is still debatable. Although the fatwa in Indonesia does not have the power of binding, for Muslims, the idea of religious morality remains a consideration in daily life. Through a literature study, this study will reveal how the problematic relations between various social agencies regarding the issuance of the cigarette fatwa. Discourse debates in the study of fiqh will begin the explanation of this study, followed by development policies in Indonesia related to the problem of cigarettes, and ended with the position of the ulema as the holder of religious authority in the matter of smoking. This study illustrates that the practice of fatwas will be effective when ulama as religious authority holders, with their "capital", can negotiate and contest with various social agents in the cigarette fatwa arena.

Abstract

A religious reaction against modernity has opened our eyes, that an argumentation in the thought zone at the end enters the empiric zone. As a result is a horizontal conflct that meets a fundamentalist and radical islamic group facing a tolerant Islamic group and has liberal thought. Islamic liberalism indeed is not always identical with the western liberalism, but has a strong tradition in islamic world. The root of thought which becomes an argument in islamic world apparently is too close in santry those who get traditional and old-fashioned stereo type all this time. Pesantren has a strenght in overcoming the modernisation crash by the high of adaptive, tolerant and humanis character level, which can be chategorized as an islamic liberal. It is obviously that the thought character comes from the islamic teaching with rahmatan lil alamin character. This study shows the positive response shown by shalafih madrasah toward modernity, also the ability to assert self identity at once as pesantren’s heir in the middle of the crowded of consumtive culture. Inside the resource owned by shalafih madrasah, this study fids the root of religious liberalism thought which is represented by the deep religious science, passion and desire they have to develop sience. And a point should be highlighted here is not seeing a social problem from a black and white view.

Abstract

In the process of segregation, every social institution, including religious ones, experiences both conflict and integration, as well as consensus and contestation. As a religious social institution, the mosque serves as a place for prostration in mahdhah worship and as a center for community development. This article examines two critical issues: first, the shifting dynamics of the mosque’s function as a social institution in Islamic preaching, and second, the negotiation and contestation of Islamic preaching spaces between mosques and other Islamic mass organizations. Employing a qualitative approach, this study conducts an in-depth analysis of primary data sources. Key insights were gathered through participatory observation of behavioral processes and activities within the research context. The research conducted in Kudus revealed several key findings: First, as a site for disseminating Islamic values, mosques serve as a vital medium for employing diverse preaching methods. Second, the overlapping social roles shared with other institutions have led to struggles, shifts, and even takeovers of functions traditionally held by religious organizations—including mosques. Consequently, mosques have transformed into contested arenas for political piety.

The development of information and communication technology has produced both challenges and opportunities within multicultural education. While digital interaction may trigger social tension when users lack adaptability, it also offers potential to promote spiritual practice and religious tolerance. This study examines the role of WhatsApp groups as a medium for fostering tolerant behavior through collective Qur’an reading (tadarus). Using a qualitative approach, data were collected from 11 participants selected through purposive sampling and analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that participation in Qur’an reading groups enhances spiritual motivation, emotional calmness, positive attitudes, and habit formation. Participants also reported strengthened faith, acceptance of life circumstances, and improved subjective well-being. The study concludes that WhatsApp-based religious activities positively shape social and spiritual personality while supporting tolerant behavior in multicultural contexts.

Abstract

The birth of the brotherhood (ukhuwa) was inspired by the human existences as social human being. The human was born from the most little social institution (family) and than to be grown in the biggest environment- from the basic society level until the governmental level, all of which rest on family ties. Solidarity shown by society in a social sphere, shows that there are many social engagement that cannot be separated either in the name of ideology, religion, or a formal relationship between the members in a country. With understanding to hadith of  ukhuwa, this study has found the sociological reality of interwoven ukhuwa  in the virtual world, in an ultra modern industrial society which is changing very rapidly due to the current flood of information coming from all over the world. The ukhuwa building is supported by three important pillars, namely a sense of sympathy, moral commitment, and social solidarity. The pillars at a glance resemble to what happens in the real social world. However, the pillars are manifested in different forms in accordance with reality in virtual space.
