Abstract

Lack of ability in comprehending English texts is students’ big problem nowadays. They fail in comprehending or grasping information from reading materials. As a result, their motivation decreases which in turn can inhibit their reading comprehension. In reading comprehension class, those difficulties faced by the students may be caused by many factors such as, reading materials, teaching method, media used and so forth. Related to the problem, cloze procedure technique can be used as an alternative technique for teaching reading. And, under the teacher’s supervision the students also can enrich their reading skill, even their English vocabulary through this technique.Kata kunci: reading, reading skill, cloze procedure, technique

Abstract

Due to the limited sources of Vocabulary teaching materials, the researcher was eager to design a model of vocabulary materials assumed needed by te students for their daily conversation. The design was a Research and Development applying descriptive procedure of three model suggested by Borg and Gall (1983) who propose three ways of developing a model of teaching material, namely: procedural, conceptual, theoretical.” Then, he followed the research procedure by Sugiyono (2007: 298) suggesting ten steps of a research and development: (1) identifying research problem, (2) collecting information, (3) designing the product, (4) validating the design, (5) revising the design, (6) testing the product , (7) revising the product, (8) applying the design, (9) re-revising the product , and (10) publishing the prooduct. In validating the model, he asked some comments from experts. Because of limited time and other reasons of doing the research, he just applied the step 1 up to 4. Based on the validation result, it could be concluded that the model had fulfilled the criteria both content and construct validity.

Abstract

The problem of this research was that there was no clear information about students’ strategies in improving their reading comprehension. Therefore, a descriptive quantitative method was used to find out the students’ strategies in improving their reading comprehension. A questionnaire consisting of 10 questions was distributed English Education Department students of IAIN Batusangkar to collect research data. The questionnaire was distributed to them, and there were 37 students who gave their responses. The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistical analysis. Based on the research results, it was found that there were three steps of reading strategies applied by students in improving their reading comprehension. In pre-reading stage, students applied six reading strategies: previewing, creating question, making prediction, writing the main points of what reader already know about the text, reading introductions and summaries, and creating a pre-reading outline strategy. The mostly applied strategy was previewing strategy, and the least one was reading introductions and summaries strategy. In whilst reading stage, they applied reading the selection text, visualizing, paraphrasing, elaborating, changing reading rate, inferring, note-taking, and rereading strategy. The mostly applied strategy was paraphrasing strategy, and the least one was rereading strategy. In the post-reading stage, students applied two reading strategies: summarizing and reviewing. Between both strategies, summarizing was dominantly applied.
