Abstract

This research was motivated by low ability in English subject, reading comprehension in particular among students in Mechanical Engineering study program. Politeknik Harapan Bersama. Based on some related studies, SQ3R technique is as one of learning techniques that proved to enhance reading skills. This research was conducted with the assumption that the technique was able to improve reading comprehension. Therefore, the purpose of the current study was to determine the effect of SQ3R technique on students' reading comprehension. The research presented 2 variables namely SQ3R technique (X) and reading comprehension (Y). Pre-Experimental method of One Group Pretest-Posttest Design was implemented with one class of Mechanical Engineering consisting 26 male and 1 female student involved during the study. Data were gained through cloze test and observation sheet. All data were then processed and analyzed quantitatively to determine the effect of the SQ3R technique on the students' ability to comprehend the passage. The results showed that tcount (5.001) was greater than ttable (2.080). Thus, this can be concluded that SQ3R technique has positive effect (54.4%) on the students' reading comprehension.

Abstract

Self-awareness is predominant for every individual, including current situation in particular, where Covid-19 outbreak has globally hit people. The attitude is also expected to be experienced by every student in all levels. The facts that there are still many students who do not realize the importance of having self-awareness in maintaining and implementing health protocols during learning from home or online learning. Accordingly, Community Service Program (PKM) team from Politeknik Harapan Bersama conducted virtual education. The program was carried out with the aim of introducing and building self-awareness among students at MI Darul Hikam Cirebon in implementing health protocols in everyday life. Storytelling was chosen as the method to develop children's affective (feeling), social, and cognitive (appreciation) aspects to raise the awareness. A total of 100 of 6th grade students and 3 homeroom teachers from the school participated in the agenda. The storytelling began with brainstorming the title and several pictures related to the situation before and during the Covid-19 pandemic. Core activities were dedicated to classically perform the 5M movement (Wear Masks, Wash hands with soap and water, Physical Distancing, Reduce Mobility and Avoid crowd) in bilingual. The enthusiasm was shown by the students in demonstrating the movements several times. They were able to mention sequent 5M movement in good English pronunciation. In addition, the students virtually practiced of washing hands and wearing masks well. This shows that the implementation of Community Service Program (PKM) ran smoothly in accordance with the above aim.

Abstract

Stereotypes about domestic routines in the kitchen, wells, and mattresses are strongly associated with married women. This has been occurred for long time. Nowadays, technological advancement and developing digital capabilities are essential not only among students and blue-collars, but also housewives. Since most individual own a smartphone or tablet, he or she should be able to use the technology and continue improving their digital literacy. However, among housewives, its use and utilization are still limited to entertainment, socializing, and making friends in social media. This time, Community Service Program (PKM) activities led to the formation of counseling and education about the importance of increasing digital literacy with the purpose of improving digital literacy skills and the use of Android-based English learning apps. This activity involved approximately 50 housewives as parents and their children from PAUD Alam Nur Cendekia. The session began with a description of the importance of continuing to improve literacy skills, which was preceded by an introduction of using Google Forms to write and share ideas or daily experiences through the links provided. In addition, the mothers were shown how to install, explore, and practice using an android-based English learning application called ENGLISH FOR KIDS. As a result, this can facilitate their children in learning English in a more entertaining way. Subjects participated in the session with enthusiasm and passion. This shows that the implementation of Community Service Program (PKM) ran smoothly in accordance with the above aim.

Abstract

In order to increase students' confidence in speaking activities, it is necessary to be equipped with pronunciation. With sufficient pronunciation, the speaking practiced by students becomes acceptable and well understood. One of the learning media that provides pronunciation facilities is the website www.eslfast.com. Students can choose learning materials from basic to advanced levels. The advantage of this website is that there are various choices of text dialogues and monologues. PKM was held on Wednesday, November 10, 2021, 10:00-12:00 WIB at SMK Karya Bhakti, Brebes using lecture and practical methods. Students are introduced to and also practices related to the use of eslfast.com website using their respective gadgets. The enthusiasm of students in the PKM activity was high, around 85% of students thought the importance of learning pronunciation using the website. It is hoped that this PKM activity will increase students' motivation to learn pronunciation. At the end of the session students were given an additional demonstration of SEFT Hypnotherapy which was beneficial for physical and spiritual health.

Abstract

The activity of speaking or known as public speaking is a scary thing for students. Although they are often asked to practice presentations in front of the class, the technique of delivering public speaking is often not paid attention to. There are several techniques that should be mastered in public speaking so that the delivery can be conveyed well to the audience. This time, the implementation of PKM aims to provide knowledge about public speaking skills, improve speaking skills, mentally prepare students to speak in front of crowds, and equip students to enter lectures or work.  The method presented in this activity is lecture and practice.with 20 students from SMK Bina Nusa Slawi. Students are also provided with modules to make it easier when delivering and students can also repeat the material at home. Students are also given directions regarding the correct way of presentation in Indonesian and English in accordance with the rules of public speaking. In addition to theory and practice in the classroom. Students are also directed to observe several public speaking figures through Youtube channel. In general, community service activity at SMK Bina Nusa Slawi are going well. Students' enthusiasm is extraordinary, as evidenced by the fact that 80 percent of students believe that having public speaking skills and increasing self-confidence are important. Students feel helped by this activity because they gain knowledge about public speaking and presentation techniques that can be used to support presentations in class or as a provision for later in the world of work.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyse the effectiveness of using animated films to improve students' English learning, especially in vocabulary. Three vocabulary component points assessed are picture identification, word meaning and spelling. Before getting treatment in the form of watching English animated films, students did 30 pre-test questions. After watching the film students were also asked to work on post-test questions with the same number and types of questions. In this study, the design used was the One-Group Pre-test Post-test Design method. This research was conducted at SMK Karya Bhakti Brebes, there were 23 subjects. From the results of the T-Test Picture Identification, we can see that the results of the t count (tcount)> ttable or 3,766> 1,713. This shows that the initial hypothesis is accepted or it can be said that the use of the animated film method is effective to increase students' vocabulary, especially in picture identification. For the results of the T-test Word Meaning, namely t count (tcount)> ttable or 2,760 > 1,713 so it can be concluded that animated films are effective for increasing students' vocabulary. And for the results of the T-Test Spelling the value of t count (tcount) < ttable or 0.568 < 1.713, indicates that the learning method using animated films is less effective.

Abstract

PKM yang dilaksanakan pada Senin, 23 Mei 2022 pukul 09.00-11.00 bertempat di SMK Karya Bhakti Brebes bertujuan untuk meningkatkan vocabulary siswa dengan menggunakan media pembelajaran film yang diambil dari Youtube. Subjek berjumlah 23 orang siswa yang berasal dari jurusan Teknik Komputer Jaringan (TKJ). Dalam kegiatan tersebut juga dilengkapi dengan pretest dan posttest, dengan nilai rata-rata pretest untuk picture identification 7 dan post test-nya 8,17, nilai rata-rata pretest untuk word meaning 3,21 dan posttesnya 7,56 serta nilai rata-rata pretest untuk speeling 4,26 dan posttestnya 6,26. Diharapkan dengan adanya kegiatan PKM ini dapat memotivasi siswa untuk meningkatkan vocabulary dengan media film Youtube yang dapat ditonton kapanpun dan dimanapun oleh siswa.

Abstract

The current study was aimed to conduct additional analysis and findings further about any deviations or errors from the translation results, as well as the dominant method of translation used by the translator in three packaging labels of face care products that are widely flow in the Indonesian community. Data were collected from three local brands' packaging labels of popular face care products among Indonesian women. Data analysis consisted of words, phrases, and sentences all of which were bilingually translated from Indonesian into English and printed in the Direction for Use or How to Use the product. The research discovered that the majority of translation inaccuracies from the three packaging labels of the products were Mistranslation, Terminology, Omission, Addition, and Word From error.

Abstract

Guna peningkatan vocabulary siswa SMK Pusponegoro 01 Brebes maka  dilaksanakan PKM pada Rabu, 14 Desember 2022 pukul 09.00-11.00 dengan menggunakan metode Whispering Game. Subjek berasal dari jurusan Desain Pemodelan dan Informasi Bangunan (DPIB). Kegiatan ini untuk memenuhi Tridharma perguruan tinggi yang dilaksanakan di lingkungan sekolah menengah kejuruan/vokasi. Hasil dari pelaksanaan PKM ini menunjukkan siswa lebih memahami dan mengingat beberapa kata maupun kalimat yang diberikan saat pelaksanaan proses pembelajaran. Antusiasme belajar siswa juga tinggi. Materi yang dibahas juga seputar aktivitas keseharian siswa jadi familiar dengan para siswa. Guru dapat langsung memperbaiki kesalahan kata atau kalimat yang disampaikan oleh siswa saat menebak kata atau kalimat yang dimaksud sekaligus hal ini dapat memperbaiki cara berkomunikasi siswa.
