Abstract

Kata Kunci: kebutuhan keluarga pasien PICU, mixed method, persepsi perawat Abstract  Mutual understanding between nurses and patients’ family on family needs during their child’s stay in PICU. The literature review indicated that factors affecting parents’ needs in a PICU are interrelated and not easily, or appropriately, assessed by using an inventory. Therefore, the objective of this study was to explore the needs of parents whose child has been an in-patient in a PICU, not only from the parents, but also from the perspective of nurses. A mixed method approach has been employed in this study. Quantitative data has been collected by using modified version of Critical Care Family Need Inventory, while the qualitative data was gained through in-depth interview.  The result of data analysis showed that there were no significant differences between the perception of the nurses and parents regarding the needs. The finding suggests that in general, PICU nurses in these two hospitals have better understanding about the parents' needs in comparation with most of nurses in the previous studies.  Keywords:  families’ needs in PICU, mixed method, nurses’ perception

Abstract

COVID-19 affects growth, development, and death. The objective of this article is to find out the growth and developmental status of children post-COVID-19. This systematic review uses the PICO search strategy through an online database. Obtained 11 articles based on inclusion criteria, reviewed using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme tools to conclude. COVID-19 influences growth (obesity or overweight) and child development (a disorder of language, emotional, behavioral, and psychosocial development). The growth and development of children post-COVID-19 are influenced by sex, age, length of hospital stay, comorbidities, and illness severity. The stimulus for optimal growth and development in post-COVID-19 children can be provided through affection, stimulation, balanced nutrition with a variety of foods, hand washing with soap, adequate physical activity, and regular weight monitoring.

Abstract

Background: Acute pain during suction in pediatric patients in the intensive care unit is unavoidable. However, it is necessary to provide non-pharmacological interventions that nurses can guide. One of the interventions that can applied in that situation is maternal voice. That intervention giving the opportunity to the children hearing the voice of their mother via voice recorder. Objective: This study was conducted to determine the effect of maternal voice on acute pain experienced by critically ill children during suctioning procedure. Methods: The research method used was quasi experiment pretest posttest without control group design. The study was conducted in May-June 2022 in the PICU in one of the hospitals in Jakarta. The research sample was selected by purposive sampling, 21 respondents assessed at the time of pretest and post-test (5 minutes before suctioning procedure, during procedure, and 5 minutes after procedure). The pain of the critically ill children was observed by FLACC (Face, Leg, Activity, Cry, Consolability) Scale. Results: The Saphiro Wilk test of normality data was carried out for all the data, either pretest or post-test data. Bivariate tests were analysed using Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test (for the abnormal data) and Paired T-Test (for the normal data) with the results of pain scores before and after being given maternal voice (when starting suction, p value = 0.001; after starting suction, p value = 0.001; 5 minutes after suction, p value = 0.002).Conclusions: PICU nurses should practice maternal voice along with suction to reduce the pain sensation received by children.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: For a long time, the use of medical adhesives in invasive device installation procedures can cause medical adhesive related to skin injury (MARSI) in children; in order to minimize the risk of MARSI incidents, so that a skin barrier is needed before applying the adhesive. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of acrylate terpolymer skin barrier against medical adhesive related to skin injury (MARSI) prevention  in children who are treated at the intensive care unit. METHOD: This study used a true experimental design which involved 46 children; it was divided into an intervention group of 24 respondents and a control group of 22 respondents who were treated by using medical adhesive due to the procedure for inserting an endotracheal tube and nasogastric tube. Samples were taken by using random sampling technique. The risk level of skin injury was assessed by using the Braden Q scale and the MARSI incidents were observed by using the observational format. RESULT: The results showed that the acrylate terpolymer skin barrier was effective in reducing the MARSI in children who were treated at the intensive care unit with having a p-value of 0.03 (α <0.05). The use of an acrylate terpolymer skin barrier can be recommended to minimize the incidence of MARSI in children. CONCLUSION: The use of acrylate terpolymer skin barrier significantly minimizes the incidence of MARSI in children.
