Abstract

This study seeks to examine the extent to which micro small and medium scale enterprises (MSMEs) apply Environmental Ethics in their business praxis. The data sources were field observations and in-depth interviews with one catering business in Yogyakarta known for its use of local food products and zero preservatives. This qualitative narrative research aims to answer how and why this selected MSME has demonstrated environmental awareness. It further examines the implications of this praxis toward the business’s sustainability. The data analysis reveals that, first, the business owner, driven by internal motivation, uses environmentally friendly products to care for customers’ satisfaction and need of healthy food. Secondly, the business, however, has not adhered to such external motivation as cutting no trees for firewood. Regardless of its damage for the environment, the use of firewood reduces production cost and no prohibition for cutting trees is thus far enacted. This study concludes that more efforts should be made to cultivate ecological concerns as the core of sustainable entrepreneurial skills.DOI:10.24071/ijhs.2019.030106

Abstract

Fostering ecological awareness in studying economics is important, bearing in mind that business today is to maintain the sustainability of the earth’s resources. This study examines Heinrich Böll’s “The Balek Scales” and Tayeb Salih’s “A Handful of Dates” to see whether the two short stories are suitable for teaching business and environmental ethics to both students of English and economics. Using content analysis method, this library research uses principles in sustainable business ethics to interpret the two stories. Data analysis shows that both stories exemplify concepts such as autonomy, integrity, justice, professionalism, and environmental awareness. This study concludes that the short stories discussed provide pedagogical tools to teach the basic concepts of professional and environmental ethics in the business world all students today need to know.

Abstract

This study aims to empirically examine the influence of subjective norms, behavioral control, and intention on the attitude of internal auditors to report fraud with ethical leadership as a moderating variable. This study used a scenario-based survey of internal auditors working in state-owned and mid-level private companies. The sample was chosen by the non-random method because the sample was taken from the participants of the SNIA (National Internal Auditor Symposium) and in total, 117 respondents were gathered as valid samples. Data were analyzed using Warp PLS 4.0. This study proves that subjective norms and behavioral control have a positive effect on the attitude of internal auditors to report fraud, while intention has a negative influence on the attitude. Ethical leadership strengthens the positive influence of subjective norms and behavioral control on the attitude of the internal auditors. It also reinforces the negative influence of intention on the internal auditors’ attitude. This research supports a model of integration between Theory of Planned Behavior and Social Cognitive Theory, which states that the environment, in this case ethical leadership, influences the internal auditor's cognition in making ethical decisions. However, this study cannot prove that ethical leadership can reduce the negative influence of intention on the attitude of internal auditors to report fraud.
