Abstract

Santoso, P. J., Novaril, M. Jawal A. S., T. Wahyudi, and A. Hasyim. 2008. Idiotype of National Durian Based On Consumer’s Preference. A survey to determine idiotype characters of Indonesian durian based on consumer’s preference on fruit biophysic was conducted from November 2005 to October 2006 in 7 provinces of North Sumatera, West Sumatera, DKI Jakarta, Banten, West Java, East Java, and Central Kalimantan. Samples were determined using purposive random sampling. Data was collected through questioner distribution and interview on 430 respondents consisted of active and retirement government official, functionary and entrepreneur, durian trader, grower, nurseryman, student, and housewife. The results indicated that the predominant biophysic characters driving consumer to pick durian which denoting the idiotype of current Indonesian durian were medium fruit size (1,6-2,5 kg), strong aroma, thick flesh, fatty flesh texture, and deep-sweet flesh taste. Meanwhile, oblong shape, green brownish skin, medium spine, yellow aril, and small seeds are identified as co-idiotype characters. This idiotype was predicted persistent for next 10-20 years. It is, therefore, recommended as guidance for grower to choose the available durian varieties to be planted, and for durian breeder to establish or select new superior varieties.

Abstract

In the nursery, media composition plays an essential role in the growth and development of plant seedlings. Extract of Mexican sunflower (Tithonia diversifolia) could be suitable for replacing organic manure and rice husk charcoal during the seedling phase. The purpose of this study is to examine the ability of Mexican sunflower extract to replace organic manure and rice husk charcoal as the source of nutrients for banana seedling. The study was arranged in a Completely Randomized Design with seven treatments and three replications. Extract of Mexican sunflower promotes plant growth (plant height, number of leaves, and leaf area), improves plant biomass, and improves soil chemical properties (pH (H2O), C organic, and total N). Application twice a week of Mexican sunflower into soil medium resulted superior in plant height, the number of leaves, leaf area, and total biomass of banana seedlings compared to other treatments. Extract of Mexican sunflower could replace organic manure and rice husk charcoal as the nutrient source in banana seedlings.

Abstract

Batu Busuk village, Lambung Bukit, Pauh Sub-district, Padang City is one of the durians producing centre that is known for its good fruit quality. As a smallholding's plantation, durian is subsistence cultivation with minimum preservation. Generally, the durian plant derived from seed multiplication, hence the quality of the product is not uniform and less productive. It is, therefore, necessary to transfer the appropriate technology that can provide seedlings in a short time and fast, simple implementation with a high success rate. Mini-grafting technology becomes a solution for the rejuvenation of durian in Batu Busuk. The community activities start in 2018 and persist in 2020. Durian nursery has carried out from July 2019, and the distribution of seedlings to the community has conducted in February 2020. The methods of transfer technology were counselling, plot demonstration and training to the durian planter community. Based on results, the problem in providing seedlings for rejuvenation of durian plants in Batu Busuk can be overcome by supplying seedlings from mini-grafting implementation. The nursery of durian with mini-grafting technology was successfully carried out and gained approximately 1100 seedlings. The mini-grafting success rate performed by durian planters reached 43%, indicating that skills play a fundamental role in the success rate of grafting on durian. Evaluation of the root stock growth demonstrated that we could use medium- and large-sized seeds from any variety of durian as rootstock due to its better growth performance. Hence, the mini-grafting technology on durian nursery activity must be maintained independently and sustainably by using the scion derived from its superior local durian in order to the advancement of durian of Batu Busuk.
