Abstract

This study examines the development of the Javanese migrant organization, Paguyuban Perantau Jawa (PAPERJA), in the city of Bukittinggi and Agam Regency from 1980 to 2025. The study aims to explain the background of PAPERJA’s formation and its development during that period. The research method employed is the historical method, which consists of four stages: heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. During the heuristic stage, data were collected through interviews, archives, documentation, and membership records. The source criticism stage was conducted to assess the validity of the obtained sources. The interpretation stage was used to analyze and connect historical facts chronologically, while the historiography stage involved the systematic writing of the research findings. The results indicate that PAPERJA was formed as a unifying platform for Javanese migrants and experienced significant development through 2025. This development was marked by leadership transitions, an increase in membership, the expansion of the organization’s territory, and the growth of social activities such as disaster relief, community celebrations, religious study groups, the management of communal graves, and the establishment of cooperatives. PAPERJA plays a vital role in strengthening solidarity and a sense of community among the Javanese migrant community in Bukittinggi City and Agam Regency.

Abstract

Gunungsitoli is the only city on Nias Island that was officially established as an autonomous city through Law Number 47 of 2008. Since then, the city has experienced significant developments in economic, infrastructural, and socio-cultural aspects. This study aims to analyze the background of the establishment of Gunungsitoli as a result of the administrative division from Nias Regency and to examine the city's development from 2008 to 2024. This research employs the historical research method consisting of four stages: heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The findings indicate that the establishment of Gunungsitoli was influenced by local government policies, the strong aspirations of the Nias community to obtain better public services, and the support of the Nias Regency government. Since its inauguration, Gunungsitoli has experienced rapid development in various sectors, marked by the completion of the government center in 2016, the revitalization of three major markets (Pasar Nou, Pasar Gomo, and Pasar Soliga), improvements and expansion of the road network reaching all six districts, the development of Gunungsitoli (Angin) Port and Binaka Airport as regional transportation facilities, as well as the increase in educational, health, and housing facilities. By 2024, development had reached all areas of Gunungsitoli, although it had not been entirely evenly distributed, as the central urban areas continued to develop more rapidly than peripheral areas, particularly Idanoi District and Gunungsitoli Alo'oa District. This development accelerated following the inauguration of the first definitive mayor in 2011 and continued through 2024. Nevertheless, challenges remain, including regional development disparities and the need to improve human resource quality and ensure sustainable governance.

Abstract

This study examines the role of Yusrizal in developing Batik Tulis Salingka Tabek in Nagari Koto Baru, Solok Regency, between 2017 and 2025. The research is motivated by Yusrizal’s success as a young entrepreneur who managed to develop a batik business rooted in local wisdom amidst industry competition, while simultaneously contributing to the preservation of Minangkabau culture. The study aims to describe Yusrizal’s journey as a batik entrepreneur and analyze the strategies he employed to develop Batik Tulis Salingka Tabek. It utilizes the historical method, encompassing heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. Data were gathered through literature reviews, observation, documentation, and interviews with Yusrizal and informants associated with the business's development. The findings indicate that the success of Batik Tulis Salingka Tabek was driven by motif innovations that highlight the cultural identity of Solok Regency, the use of digital media and exhibitions as marketing strategies, the strengthening of government networks, and the empowerment of the local community in the production process. This business has not only enhanced the competitiveness of Solok’s signature batik but has also impacted job creation, improved the local economy, and fostered the preservation of local culture. The study demonstrates that developing creative industries based on local wisdom can be an effective strategy for strengthening regional cultural identity while supporting sustainable community economic development.

Abstract

The Rumah Gadang is a cultural heritage of the Minangkabau people, serving not only as a residence but also as a hub for customary practices, social life, and clan identity. This study aims to analyze the transformation process of the Rumah Gadang belonging to the Melayu clan in Nagari Jawi-Jawi Guguk, Solok Regency, into a culture-based homestay between 2017 and 2025, and to examine its management patterns in supporting cultural tourism development. The study employs the historical method, comprising the stages of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. Data were gathered through interviews with customary leaders, nagari government officials, and homestay managers, and supplemented by documentation and homestay guestbook archives from 2018 to 2025. The findings indicate that the repurposing of the Melayu clan's Rumah Gadang was carried out through a deliberative process involving niniak mamak (traditional leaders), Bundo Kanduang (female leaders), Pokdarwis (tourism awareness groups), the nagari government, and clan members, all while preserving the building's authentic form and traditional architectural values. This transformation was initiated after Nagari Jawi-Jawi Guguk was designated a Cultural Village in 2017, with the Rumah Gadang subsequently utilized as a homestay starting in 2018. The homestay has boosted local economic activity and served as a vehicle for preserving Minangkabau customs and culture through various tourist-engaging cultural activities. However, management still faces challenges, such as limited funding, inadequate supporting facilities, and a decline in visitor numbers during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study demonstrates that utilizing the Rumah Gadang as a homestay represents an adaptive approach to cultural heritage preservation that supports cultural tourism development while strengthening local community empowerment.
