Abstract

Currently, Generation Z in Indonesia has started to enter the workplace. This is an opportunity as well as a challenge for Indonesian society today and in the future. Therefore, it is necessary to prepare to welcome this new generation into the workforce, including considering what leadership styles can affect the business environment with this new generation. One of the leadership styles that may be adopted by leaders is micromanaging which is understood as a leadership style where the leader always wants to be involved in the work of subordinates; supervise subordinates carefully. Previous studies on the impact of micromanaging on Gen Z still show mixed results, therefore this study aims to understand Gen Z's perception of the micromanaging leadership style and its impact on their work performance. This study uses a qualitative phenomenological approach so that researchers can better understand Gen Z's perception of the micromanaging leadership style and its impact on their work performance based on their own experiences through in-depth interviews for data collection. From the perspective of Gen Z, micromanaging is perceived to have both positive and negative impacts on their work performance. Gen Z recognizes that micromanaging is necessary at this point in their careers with no work experience. Suggestions on how to manage micro Gen Z have been outlined and are part of this research.

Abstract

The survey shows that 65% of startup failures are caused by leaders and also low engagement in the company. Therefore, this research was conducted to find out what characteristics a leader should have and how to implement these characteristics to increase engagement at his startup. The research used a qualitative approach focusing on multiple case studies as a method with the aim of gaining individual and group experience. To answer the research objective, two early-stage startups were selected along with six informants and in-depth interviews were conducted. Data analysis was started with a coding procedure from open to selective coding and ended with pattern matching analysis. From the analysis, it was found five leadership characteristics in the early-stage startups that must be possessed by a leader to increase employee engagement: (1) Influence; (2) Firm; (3) Intelligence; (4) Democracy; (5) Inspire. Each characteristic has its own practical example of how the leader can implement these characteristics in real cases, so it can enhance organizational performance indirectly.

Abstract

Patriarchal culture puts women into challenging situations where they are expected to maintain role duality, balancing gender role expectations of a mother and professional work. Women, especially working mothers, overcome this by shaping their leadership style based on their acquired motherhood parenting style. Their nurturing, empowerment, empathy, and understanding may answer millennials' expectations of ideal leaders to prepare them as future leaders. Leadership influences multiple levels of an organization and performance, enabling millennials as the biggest yet most influential working cohort might be the key to achieving a high-performance state in the current dynamic yet challenging economic landscape. This paper aims to discuss how motherhood shapes leadership characteristics in working mothers, which supports millennials in enabling high-performance organizations. Based on the critical reflection selected for this study, the reflected motherhood into leadership style may be beneficial to fill the demand created by millennials to support their individual contribution, which in the end, shapes organizational culture and enables high-performance organizations.
