Abstract

Students who work while studying often face high academic pressures and workloads, which can lead to psychological stress and decreased psychological well-being (PWB). This study aims to evaluate how individual characteristics, such as character strengths and academic resilience, interact and influence PWB among working students. Character strengths and academic resilience are two psychological resources that help individuals adaptively cope with academic and work pressures, maintain emotional stability, and enhance psychological well-being. This study used a quantitative approach with 254 working students aged 18–25. Data were collected using three validated instruments: Ryff’s Scales of Psychological Well-Being (RSPWB) to measure PWB, the Academic Resilience Scale (ARS-30) to measure academic resilience, and the Values in Action Inventory of Strengths (VIA-IS-V6) to measure character strengths. Data analysis was conducted using multiple linear regression to test both simultaneous and partial effects among variables. The results showed that character strengths and academic resilience significantly influenced PWB among working students (R² = 0.528; p < 0.001). Partially, the dimensions of meaningfulness and courage had the greatest contribution to improving PWB, followed by personal competence, temperance, and transcendence. In conclusion, individual characteristics such as character strengths and academic resilience play a significant role in enhancing the psychological well-being of working students. These findings offer practical contributions to the development of training programs based on character strengths and academic resilience to help working students manage academic and work stress and improve their psychological well-being.
