Abstract

Many social institutions concerning on education field open English classes for children by recruiting volunteer teachers. However, this voluntary English teaching activity makes the materials provided are not well structured so that the preparation of teaching materials is needed based on the needs of the learners involved. This research aims to identify the English learning needs in Rubik Social School. The method applied are observation, questionnaires and interviews. The subject of research is the students and voluntary teachers. The results of the study include the target needs and learning needs. The target of English learning needs at the Rubik Social School is to support English subjects taught in formal schools and become the basis of skills for further education. The learning materials needed are simple vocabularies and expressions in which topics are close to children such as parts of the body, colours, family, fruits and vegetables and others. English learning is held in a face-to-face meeting and taught by voluntary non-native speaker teachers every week. The results of this study should be continued as material for the syllabus and teaching materials.

Abstract

Pangeuyeuks as the guide in Ngeuyeuk Seureuh ceremony has an important role to explain the marriage values through symbols to prospective bride and groom. This article describes speech acts used by pangeuyeuks in Ngeuyeuk Seureuh ceremony. Descriptive qualitative and distributional method was applied in doing the analysis of data. The speech acts were analyzed by the theory of illocutionary act to find the function of speech act, syntactic types of sentences to find the form of speech acts, and relationship between the function and form of speech acts to find the directness and indirectness of speech acts. The result shows that the illocutionary acts of pangeuyeuks classified into four types: assertives, directives, commissives and expressives, while the sytanctic types of sentences consist of declarative, interrogative, imperative and exclamatory. The direct speech acts are embodied in assertives, directives, commissives and expressives, wheareas the indirect speech acts are embodied in directive speech acts. The embodiment of the speech acts used by pangeuyeuks reflects special norms of interaction based on Sundanese local genius.

Abstract

Pengabdian masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk memberikan pelatihan kepada pengajar di Rubik Bojong Gede dan L Course Tajur Halang mengenai pengelolaan kelas dan penggunaan bahasa dalam pengajaran bahasa Inggris untuk anak-anak. Pengelolaan kelas meliputi karakteristik anak-anak, penataan posisi duduk, pengelompokan siswa, media pengajaran, dan perencanaan pengajaran sedangkan penggunaan bahasa meliputi ekspresi bahasa yang digunakan dalam setiap tahap kegiatan pembelajaran. Pelaksanaan pengabdian masyarakat ini menggunakan beberapa metode yaitu presentasi, diskusi, praktik mengajar dan evaluasi. Melalui pelatihan yang diberikan, para peserta dapat meningkatkan kompetensi dalam mengajar bahasa Inggris untuk anak-anak.Keywords: pengelolaan kelas, penggunaan bahasa, pengajaran bahasa Inggris

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui realisasi prinsip kerja sama dalam percakapan masyarakat sedulur sikep di Pati. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Sumber data yang berasal dari percakapan masyarakat sedulur sikep didapatkan melalui studi lapangan dengan teknik pencatatan dan perekaman. Teori prinsip kerjasama Grice digunakan untuk menganalisis percakapan dan realisasinya dibagi kedalam pemenuhan dan pelanggaran prinsip kerja sama. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa realisasi pemenuhan percakapan dalam masyarakat sedulur sikep memenuhi empat maksim yaitu maksim kuantitas, kualitas, relasi, dan cara. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa percakapan mereka sesuai dengan fakta, bahasanya singkat, jelas serta respon antarpenutur yang relevan. Realisasi pelanggaran prinsip kerjasama meliputi maksim kuantitas, relasi dan cara. Pelanggaran ini menunjukkan bahwa tuturan yang diungkapkan masyarakat sedulur sikep mengandung informasi yang diulang sebagai bentuk penegasan, mengandung ambigu dan informasi yang tidak relevan. Ketiadaan pelanggaran maksim kualitas menunjukkan karakteristik dasar masyarakat sikep yang jujur.Kata Kunci: prinsip kerja sama, maksim Grice, Sedulur Sikep Pati

Abstract

Since compound-complex sentences combine two distinct sentences, many students face difficulties to generate the type of sentence. This research aims to analyze the students’ errors in writing compound-complex sentences. The research applied the descriptive qualitative research design. The participants of the research are English education department students taking basic writing course. The data was taken from student’s writing task and analyzed classifying them into different types of sentence errors based on Hacker and Sommers (2011). The result shows that the error made by students are fused sentence 35.6 %, missing verb 28%, missing subject 20%, comma splices 13,3% and missing subject and verb 2,2%. It is advised that the lecturers in writing classes provide more tasks in addition to demonstrating more frequent errors and examples of compound-compound complex phrases taken from real-world texts.

Abstract

The aim of the research is to analyze the characterization of the main characters Kevin in the We Need to Talk about Kevin film by Lynne Ramsay based on Sigmund Freud's Psychoanalysis theory about the three psychological elements possessed by humans, namely the id, ego, and superego. Library research method is used to write this thesis. In addition, the author also used content analysis research techniques to analyze the data. After the author conducted research on the We Need to Talk about Kevin film by Lynne Ramsay, the author concluded that Kevin have all the psychological elements of the id, ego, and superego. The overall data on Kevin's character obtained by the author are 6 data. There are 3 data elements of id (50%), followed by 2 data of ego elements (33,3%), and 1 data of superego elements (16.7%). Therefore, it can be concluded that id is the most dominant psychological element in Kevin's character

Abstract

Figurative language is commonly found in literary works, such as a song. The purpose of this research is to analyze the types and meanings of figurative language used in Imagine Dragons’ album Evolve. The research used descriptive qualitative. The theory used is from Mezzo (1999) which divided figurative language into three categories; comparison type (Metaphor, Simile, and Personification), substitution type (Metonymy and Synecdoche), and exaggeration type (Hyperbole and Litotes). The result indicated that there are 100 lines of lyrics that contain figurative language in the Evolve album. They are metaphor (23%), simile (8%), personification (15%), metonymy (36%), synecdoche (2%), hyperbole (10%), and litotes (6%). The most dominant type of figurative language in Evolve's album is metonymy with 36 lines and metaphor with 23 lines. Metonymy became most used in the album Evolve which represents explicit content that imagines a character or object in the album Evolve, while metaphor became the second most used figurative language in Evolve album to make the ideas of the lyrics more meaningful, imaginative, and interesting for the listener.

Abstract

An animated series narrated about a preschool bunny named Bing shows how he interacts with the world around him with the support of his caretaker through little everyday experiences. The goal of this study is to explore the pattern of adjacency pairs among Bing and his friends with their caregivers in the Bing Bunny animated series. This study applied qualitative methods and conversational analysis. The data was gathered from the conversation of all characters in Bing Bunny's official channel on YouTube. The result shows that adjacency pairs in five episodes of the Bing Bunny animated series consist of 10 types. They are greeting-greeting, summon-answer, question-answer, request-acceptance, request-refusal, offer-accept, blame-denial, apology-minimization, assertion-agreement, announcement-acknowledgement. The adjacency pair patterns reveal the successful engagement among the children and the caregivers. The exposure of adjacency pairs to children will contribute to language acquisition, cognitive development, social understanding, and overall learning.
