Abstract

Smallholder native chicken farming continues to face challenges that include simple farming management as well as ND and AI diseases that lead to decreased productivity and increased mortality rate. The aim of the study was to develop a strategy to reduce the mortality rate of native chickens in extensive and semi-intensive rearing systems. This study uses survey method with 78 extensive and 88 semi-intensive native chicken farmers as respondent. This study explores the disease incidence, illness treatment, mortality rate, as well as AI and ND antibody titers which then analyzed descriptively. System dynamic model using Ventana software (VENSIM) was used to identify the contributing factors to the mortality rate of native chicken in smallholder farming. The results showed that the common diseases among native chickens reared in semi-intensive and extensive farming are AI, ND, CRD, and pullorum, with a high rate of disease-specific mortality (>5%). Compared to native chickens in semi-intensive farming, those of in extensive farming showed a higher natural immunity against AI and ND. The qualitative modeling produced seven reinforcing loops and five balancing loops. Some challenges in developing native chicken farming were disease incidence due to lack of proper land and cage, the occurrence of selling unhealthy chickens, farmers opting out for poultry vaccination, high operational cost, lack of business motivation, limited knowledge on poultry management and health, lack of extension programs, and traditional management. We concluded that the rate of disease-specific mortality (ND and AI) remained high in native chickens reared both in extensive and semi-intensive farming. It takes an effort to improve farming management, vaccination, and the government’s contribution through extension programs to decrease disease incidence and mortality rate of native chickens.

Abstract

Rice field constitutes 70 percent of Kaliputih village in Purwojati municipality, Banyumas and half of the community are farmers. İt motivated the community and Karang Taruna 'Tunas Harum -2' to raise ducks, but they faced some issues of obtaining DOD and high mortality of ducks. Therefore, it required some innovation to solve the problems, namely artificial insemination, hatching eggs in an incubator, feed processing by utilizing the available agricultural waste, and incorporating antioxidants from waste, tea dregs. Tugiyanti et al. (2019) reported that fermented tea dreg contains high antioxidants that could improve duck health and the quality of duck eggs and meat. This community service engaged an extension/technology adoption program through seminars, practice/demo, evaluation as well as training for instructors. The materials (theory and practice) designed for the members of Karang Taruna included the method of duck farming, artificial insemination for ducks, tea dreg fermentation, methods for feed formulation, and incorporating 3% tea dreg to the feed and practice hatching eggs in an incubator. The participants, including the village government officials and the community, had successfully partaken in the process of technology transfer and practice. Conclusively, the community service program can modify the community habit in duck farming and solve issues regarding DOD, feed, and production.

Abstract

Liquid Organic Fertilizer (LOF) is the utilization of animal fecal waste, which contains nutrients and beneficial microbes that can be applied to plants. The animal feces are mixed with EM4, which serves as a source of microbes, while molasses comes from sugar production waste and functions as food for the EM4. By doing so, mixing livestock manure with these materials and then fermenting them for 7 days allows them to be used on plants, making them more fertile. This activity is used as an ecological step to reduce environmental pollution that can cause unpleasant odors and serve as a breeding ground for disease. The activity was conducted using Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) through the Student Community Service Program for Community Empowerment (KKN-PMM) for farmer groups and livestock breeder groups to increase harvest yields and reduce unpleasant odors released along with animal feces. The community of Kalikuning Village, especially farmers and livestock breeders, gained knowledge about making liquid organic fertilizer to improve soil fertility for their crops. Conclusion: The community of Kalikuning Village gained new knowledge and insights into spraying liquid organic fertilizer to achieve good crop quality through the transfer of knowledge from the UNSOED KKN-PMM Team to the local residents.
