Abstract

Note taking is a type of activity that is inseparable in the academic settings; for example, making short notes on a lecture, creating a list of to-do assignments, or re-writing ideas from a textbook. However, these note taking activities are often done without any particular system since the majority of Indonesian students have little knowledge on how to properly take notes. In this study, the aim was to develop students’ note taking ability by introducing them to a note taking format, commonly known as Cornell notes. The study employed two-cycle class action research to implement the Cornell format to a total of 15 students of English Education Department of University of Muhammadiyah Aceh. The students were asked to take notes by following the procedure in the Cornell format, in which it required the students to write in short phrases/sentences in four blank columns: heading, cue, note taking, and summary. The students’ note taking results were compared to a note taking criteria adapted from AVID, which used a four-scale category. Findings indicated that, in general, ten out of 15 students were in the “fair” category and four were in the “good” category, while only one was “poor”, in taking proper notes by using the Cornell format in cycle I. These results further improved in the cycle II wherein five students had been in the “excellent” category, seven reached the “good” category, and the remaining three were “fair”. The students were eventually able to do appropriate note taking by using the Cornell format, and this suggests that the students can make a good habit in note taking if they apply a correct method. Further, they can also make a summary out of a long written text so that they can easily review and learn a topic better. Keywords:Note taking, Cornell Format.

Abstract

An issue faced by students nowadays is not knowing how to take notes effectively with certain techniques so that the results of a record or a summary simply copy the information verbatim from the existing text. The main purpose of this study is to improve the students’ ability in note taking on English texts with the Cornell format and to figure out the format’s benefits. Some important parts of the note taking process that have not been mastered by the students included finding important ideas from the text, describing and recording the conclusions of the text, rewriting ideas, and writing down bibliographic details such as names of the authors, titles of books, journals, publishers, publications, journal pages, and web addresses. This study used pre-experimental method with the one-shot case study design, taking a sample of 15 students from the Department of English Education, University of Muhammadiyah Aceh. Data were taken from the student worksheets using the Cornell format, and analyzed descriptively and compared with the scoring rubric adapted from AVID. The results showed that 60% of students were able to achieve category 2 (fair), and as many as 40% were in category 3 (good). These results showed that the Cornell note taking technique has been useful in helping the students improve their ability to take notes on the English texts. Abstract

This paper reviews the article written by Gregory Paul Glasgow entitled “Teaching English in English, ‘in principle’: The national language curriculum for Japanese senior high schools” published in 2014.  This paper aims to examine the author’ findings on teachers’ perception of new course of study by proposing some theoretical frameworks of communicative language teaching and the planned behavior analysis perspective to support the discussion. The article author raised the issue of Japanese English teachers’ perceptions towards the recently launched national foreign language curriculum for Japanese senior high schools including a provision of English classes to be conducted in English. The author tried to clear the issue by revealing how Japanese teachers of English (JTEs) interpreted the new initiative to conduct ‘English classes in English’ in Japanese senior higher schools and the relationship between official policy expectation and JTEs’ perceived new initiative in policy implementation.
