Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the development of English teaching materials at the vocational high school (SMK) Mohammad Toha in Cimahi, the availability and suitability of English teaching materials to the needs of students, especially teaching materials / materials that students learn according to their level of needs in the world of work especially for SMK students. The research problem formulation is; 1) how is the development of English teaching materials used in vocational high school (SMK) Mohammad Toha Cimahi especially in computer and network engineering (TKJ) majors? 2) what difficulties did the teachers get in developing specific English language teaching materials ?. And the purpose of the study was to develop more specific English Language Teaching Materials in accordance with the field of vocational students at Mohammad Toha Cimahi Vocational School (SMK) especially in the Department of Computer and Network Engineering (TKJ). 2) To find solutions to the obstacles faced by teachers in developing specific English Language teaching materials. This research method uses descriptive qualitative method which aims to describe the development of English Language Teaching Materials in Vocational High Schools (SMK). The results and findings in the field that students have high motivation to learn English, but there are obstacles they face including; 1) The material presented still does not meet the target needs of students for their career world, 2) Authentic material is not yet available, 3) The absence of developers / innovations in the development of teaching environments conducted by schools and teachers so that the material presented still does not answer the needs of students in SMK, innovation has not been made in developing teaching materials at school so the material presented is still textual. Teachers experience difficulties in developing teaching materials because of the lack of knowledge, the absence of experts in the development of teaching materials and the lack of training and reference in the development of teaching materials.

Abstract

The title of this research is Teaching Derivational Process to Compose Proper Sentence. The objective of this study was to prove whether or not that Teaching Derivational Process influences students’ ability in using the proper words in constructing proper sentence. The group pre-test post-test design and quantitative method were used in this research. There were 26 students in this research to be entire population and they are from SMK Mohammad Toha Cimahi. This research used pre-test and post-test as the instruments. The data were collected by giving the instruments to the students, both pre-test (before giving the students treatment) and post-test (after giving the students treatment) and to analyze the data, the writer used t-test formula. The result of this study showed that  the mean score of pre-test was 50,38, the mean score of post-test was 82,30, the t-obs was 10, 96, the t-table with degrees of freedom (df) was 25 and level significance at 5 % (0,05) was 1,71. From the data analysis, the writer concluded that the students’ understanding about derivational process influenced their ability in using the proper word in constructing proper sentence and it also meant that the t-observe was higher than t-table (10,96 > 1,71), so the alternative hypothesis was accepted.

Abstract

Mastering vocabulary is very important, because vocabulary is the main aspect in teaching English. Vocabulary is a set of words for which an individual can assign meanings when he or she  listening, speaking, reading or writting. People interact in communication will not be effective if they do not master the vocabulary. Direct method is one of method that can help learner to learn vocabulary by themselves. The objective of this research is to find out whether teaching vocabulary using direct method can improve students’ vocabulary at seventh grade of MTs. Negeri Sukasari. The method of this research was quantitative method. The researchers used one group pretest-posttest design. The population of this research was the seventh grade students of MTs. Negeri Sukasari Cimahi and the sample taken from 31 students. The data of this research were collected by giving pretest and posttest, and the data was assisted by SPSS 23.version. Mean score of pretest was 71.61, while mean score of posttest was 89.68 and Wilcoxon test Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) significant level was .000. In the other words, the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected, because the Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) in Wilcoxon test .000 was lower than 0.05. It means that teaching using direct method can improve the students’ vocabulary.

Abstract

This research aims to find out students’ difficulties in learning reading comprehension using narrative text through whatsapp for the third grade students. In this research, the writer used qualitative research method.  To collect the data, the researchers used questionnaire and test. From the first test, results was obtained 12 of 48 students who managed to achieve KKM. While on the second test, there was an increase to 42 of 48 students who managed to reach KKM. It can be concluded that whatsapp can make it easier for teachers and students in learning reading comprehension using narrative text, especially in this pandemic covid-19. The results of questionnaire showed that the mostl influenced factor of students' difficulties in learning reading comprhension are lack of vocabulary mastery, internet network problems and family factors. Keywords:  Narrative Text, Reading Comprehension, Whatsapp

Abstract

Project Based- Learning (PBL) is one of teaching technique where the students work in group project and it is required students for designing, planning, and carrying out an extended project that produces a publicly- exhibited output such as a product, publication, or presentation. This research used Classrom Action Research as the research method. The sample of this research were  30 students of the tenth grade, Tehnik Instalasi Tenaga Listrik of SMK PGRI 3 CIMAHI. The students assessed by using speaking rubric by Brown 2004. The data were calculated by using SPSS. As the result, the technique can improve the students speaking skill. It is concluded based  on data analyzed. In the first cycle, the students categorized as the poor and low English speaking while the second and the third cycle, the students showed a significant achievement and categorized in good average. This technique can be the affective technique that can be used by the teachers who want to improve students’ speaking skill. Keywords:  Speaking, Students’ Difficulties, PBL

Abstract

This article is an analysis study of tone in a speech, and this analysis based on the theory by Michael McCarthy and Crystal. The article is aimed to know about kinds of tones, the dominant tones and the meaning of dominant tones in the speech. The writers found that this speech used five kinds of tones, namely Rise, Fall, Fall-rise, Rise-fall and level. The result showed all answer of the question. In this article we can know the meaning from the speaker in his speech, how is his feeling and  his expression just from their tones in speaking that is Steve job’s showed how Steve Job’s is Encouragement, Urgency and Straight (positive face) because the dominant types of tone he used in his speech is Fall-rise. In the video showed. The writers suggests for the further writers can use other sources which are more than interesting from this one.

Abstract

Affixation is a bound morpheme process for an affix is attached to a base, which may be simple structure or complex structure. Bound morpheme only has two kinds of affixes namely prefix and suffix. Bound morpheme classified into derivational and inflectional morphemes. Derivational morpheme is a bound morpheme that changes the form of the word classes in a sentence. Inflectional morpheme never involves a change of class. The aims of this research was to analyze what kind of derivational and inflectional process mostly used in the text and also describes what kind of affixation that are attached in derivational and inflectional process entitled “The Ugly Duckling” cited from English for Specific Purposes by (Subandi, 2017).This research used descriptive qualitative method. This research founded that the most frequently in morphology on text is inflectional, there were 29 words of inflectional processes. The last, it was found the most frequently in affixes on text only two process of affixes First, there were nine words of kinds the suffix, there four kinds that attached to derivational process there five kinds that attached to inflectional process. Secondly, there was only one kind of prefix that attached to inflectional process.

Abstract

The title of this research is analyzing the Deixis of Song Lyrics in Adele entitled “All I Ask”. The researchers used a descriptive qualitative method in this research. This research are aimed to find out the types of deixis (Personal, Spatial, and Temporal) and the most dominant deixis which found in the lyrics of Adele's song. Based on the results and discussion, the researchers concluded that all deixis which proposed by Yule are found in Adele’s song lyrics. Personal deixis is mostly found in 38 occurrences dominate in this song. The words are “I, me, we, our, ours, us, and my” as the first person deixis, “you, and your” as the second person deixis, and “they and it” as the third person deixis. In the second position is spatial deixis, this, and in your eyes which found in 5 occurrences. The third position is temporal deixis, coming next, tomorrow, and last night which found in 3 occurrences. Keywords:  Deixis, Song, Lyric

Abstract

Inflectional is the smallest part of morphosyntax but it becomes important because it is the basic knowledge that students have to comprehend in learning and producing correct sentence. To understand them, the students have to learn it through virtual learning in COVID-19 pandemic era which  has changed the way of teaching and learning process especially in Morphosyntax. This research aimed to explore the types and the students’ difficulties in understanding inflectional process of morphology. This research used descriptive qualitative method to describe and to analyze the data. To collect the data, the researchers used two kinds of instruments namely pre-test, post-test, and interview. The population in this research consist of two classes from English Education Study Program at the fifth semester at IKIP Siliwangi.The result showed that the student mostly found the types of inflectional process namely plural form, 3rd singular person, past tense, progressive, comparative and superlative correctly while participle both in present and past tense form are mostly found incorrectly for they are having the higher function which are having similarity as verb progressive and as adjective at the same time. To understand the difference of the both function, the students are demanded to recognize well the structure of both. Keywords:  Inflectional Process, Morphosyntax, Online Learning

Abstract

This research is about flouting maxims on the dialogue of characters in UP! Animated movie. Hence, it is aimed to know flouting maxim on  UP! animated movie. This research is used qualitative research. The data of this study was taken on flouting maxims on the discourse of figure in UP! animated movie from he main characters namely old name Carl Fredrickson and Russel. There are several steps in collecting the data namely, finding a script UP! of the animated movie, next is analyzing the script with the UP! movie and the last is to list the utterances of the main personality of UP! animated movie in flouted maxims and finally analyzing them based on the chosen theory. After conducting the research, the writer found 20 sentences that flouted by Mr. Fredickson and Russel animated UP! movie. Those kinds of maxims are 6 flouted maxims of quantity, 7 flouted maxims of quality, 3 flouted maxims of relevance, and 4 flouted maxims of manner. Keywords:  Flouting maxim, Dialogue, Movie
