Abstract

The title of this research is deixis in the Song Lyrics “Level of Concern” by Twenty One Pilots. The objectives of this research are to identify the type of deixis and to find out the dominant types of deixis that are mostly used in the song lyrics entitled Level of Concern. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The researchers took the data from (Joseph, 2020) of the song lyric entitled “Level of Concern” by Twenty One Pilots, for it describes the current world situation, and the lyrics of the song contains a wide range of deixis that have attracted the researchers to examine this song. After conducting this research, the researchers concluded that three types of deixis namely personal, spatial, and temporal deixis. Personal deixis divided into three parts: the first person as speaker, the second person as hearer and the third person as others, with 77 words in that song. Temporal deixis showed a certain period of time which consist of 3 words, and the spatial deixis describes the location in a conversation which consist of  2 words. The major type from the whole data are personal deixis, because they represent the singer and the message which wanted to be delivered to the listeners. Keywords:  Pragmatic, Deixis, Song Lyric

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the use of transitivity in the tenth grade students’ recount text and to find out the types of processes that are mostly found in the text. The data are taken from five recount texts written by five groups of the tenth grade students in one of the senior high schools in Cimahi. The researchers used descriptive qualitative as the method of this research. From the whole data, the researchers found 69 clauses and those are divided into seven types of processes as stated by Halliday. After classifying them, the researchers only found six types of processes which are: material process found in 45 clauses (65.2%), mental process found in 11 clauses (16%), relational process found in 5 clauses (7.2%), existential process found in 4 clauses (5.8%), behavioral process found in 2 clauses (2.9%) and verbal process found in 2 clauses (2.9%). While meteorological process was not found in the data. The most commonly process found in the data was material process which consists of 45 clauses for the recount text was retelling something happened in the past which experienced by the students. Keywords:        Systemic Functional Grammar, Transitivity, Recount Text

Abstract

Writing is one of the skills in English. The five components of writing that must be grasped are content, organization, vocabulary, mechanics, and grammar. English grammar is different from Indonesian grammar.  Therefore, many students still have difficulty in writing texts by paying attention to aspects of writing. Especially in the grammatical aspect, there are still many errors made by students. The goals of this research is to find out kinds of errors in writing descriptive texts of the eighth grade students of junior high school in cianjur. The descriptive qualitative method was employed in this research. The research instrument was acquired from the students' tests. The result showed that the errors made by students based on Dulay (1982)  was four type of the grammarical errors, they were omission (14 with percentage 18%), addition (27 with percentage 35%), misformation (33 with percentage 42%), dan misordering (4 with percentage 5%). It means that misformation was the most common grammar error type committed by students. Keywords:  Writing, Error Analysis, Descriptive Text

Abstract

The title of this research is An Analysis of Connotative Meaning in the Proverbs of the Besemah Language (A Semantic Study).  Besemah language is identical of a phonem /e/ from indonesian phonem /a/. The language is used in some areas of south Sumatra especially in Lahat district, South Oku district, Bengkulu Province, and Pagar Alam City. This research was aimed to describe the connotative meaning in the proverbs of the Besemah Language. The object of this research was taken from secondary data which is the dictionary of Besemah Language written by Mahdi (2017). The writer used descriptive qualitative method in this research and some semantic theories both grand and supported theories to analyze the data. The results of this research showed that that the connotative meaning in the proverbs of Besemah Language are having great differences to denotative ones for it depends on individual experience. It means that we will understand the meaning of the proverbs from someone’s experience both through the direct story from the older people (anchestors) and witten book/dictionary. Besides, the connotative meaning of the proverbs in Besemah language mostly corelate the meaning of its proverbs to human life such responsibility, social concern, hard work, patience and love.

Abstract

Teaching English is one of activity in the classroom. A game can use to improve students’ vocabularies mastery in the process of teaching learning, so students do not get bored while studying English. This research is attempted to verify the effectiveness of the Crossword Puzzle Game in teaching vocabulary at the seventh grade students of SMPN 10 Cimahi. The main objective is to figure out whether the crossword puzzle game is effective to improve the students’ vocabularies or not. The method is used quantitative research and pre-experimental research design conducted in one class. The populations of this research are the seventh grade students. And the sample is one class of the seventh grade students, which is class VII.E that consists of 32 students. The data is collected with the pretest and posttest as an instrument. The data analysis shows the result of mean score of posttest is higher than mean score of the pretest. The result of computation using Wilcoxon based on the table of test statistics, asymptotic significance (2-tailed) = 0.000 which is lower than 0.05. It means the alternative hypothesis is supported. Therefore, teaching English vocabulary using crossword puzzle game is effective to improve the students’ vocabulary. Keywords: Teaching, Vocabulary, Crossword Puzzle Game

Abstract

This research is entitled “Analyzing Thematic Structure in Indonesian Folktales in English Version: A Systemic Functional Grammar Study (SFG)”.  The objectives of this study are analyzing and describing the themes, their elements and thematic progressions of Indonesian Folktales in English Version. The collected data, in this research, were taken from the book entitled “Indonesian Folktales” published in 1981 by Pustaka Media Publisher. One data, Princess Sumur Bandung which consists of 50 paragraphs and 221 clauses was chosen to be analyzed based on the theory of Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) of Gerot and Wignell (1994). The method and technique used in this study are a descriptive qualitative method. The results of this research reveal that (1) there are two kinds of theme-rheme patterns are found; they are simple theme-rheme patterns and multiple theme-rheme patterns. In details, the simple theme-rheme patterns contain constant theme-rheme pattern, linear theme-theme rheme pattern, and derived theme-rheme pattern, while multiple ones contain a combination of constant and linear theme, a combination of linear and derived theme, and a combination of constant, linear and derived theme-rheme pattern. Besides, the combination of constant and linear theme-rheme pattern are the most frequently distributed.  While the elements of themes which found are textual, interpersonal and ideational elements. Textual elements cover continuative, structural conjunction, wh-relative and conjunctive adjunct. Interpersonal elements cover modal adjunct, vocative, wh-interrogative and finite verbal operator. Ideational elements cover nominal group, noun, adverbial group, prepositional phrase, process, complement, group complex and adverb.

Abstract

Sejak pemerintah melaksanakan amanat Peraturan Menteri Pendidikan Nasional Nomor 70/2009 tentang pendidikan inklusi yang mana aturan di dalamnya mengintegrasikan anak autis dari sekolah khusus ke sekolah umum merupakan gerbang memandirikan mereka. Dengan berlakunya aturan tersebut berarti setiap sekolah baik negeri maupun swasta wajib menerima siswa yang berkebutuhan khusus (ABK). Hal ini akan memunculkan permasalahan baru bagi sekolah yang belum memiliki kesiapan system dalam menerapkan methode proses belajar dan mengajar yang mengintegrasikan anak autis dalam sekolah umum. Sekolah mitra merupakan salah satu dari sekolah yang memiliki masalah dalam hal penyediaan media pembelajaran khususnya bagi anak autis dalam pengajaran bahasa Inggris yang inovatif. Untuk mencapai tujuan pembelajaran yang maksimal dibutuhkan kreativitas para guru dalam merencanakan dan menyediahkan media pebelajaran yang inovatif karena hal itu dapat berdampak pada minat siswa yang rendah dalam memahami pembelajaran bahasa Inggris khususnya bagi anak berkebutuhan khusus. Solusi permasalahan yang ditawarkan dalam Program Kemitraan Masyarakat Stimulus ini yaitu memberikan pelatihan terhadap para guru dalam merancang dan membuat media barang bekas yang inovatif. Pelatihan tersebut berupa diskusi tentang perancangan dan pembuatan media barang bekas yang terbuat dari bahan baku yang mudah didapatkan dari lingkungan sekitar. Media-media pembelajaran tersebut dirancang agar para siswa autis (ABK) dapat memahami dan mengaplikasikan bahasa inggris dasar yang sangat diperlukan dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Dengan pelatihan tersebut diharapkan para guru mendapatkan ilmu dalam merancang sekaligus membuat media pembelajaran bahasa Inggris yang inovatif dan interaktif khususnya untuk pengajaran anak yang berkebutuhan khusus (ABK). Media pembelajaran yang dipelajari dan dibuat dalam pelatihan ini diharapkan dapat digunakan dalam pembelajaran di kelas untuk meningkatkan hasil belajar siswa di sekolah SMP Inklusi sederajat.

Abstract

Reading has developed into a critical tool for education, particularly in the teaching and learning processes, and it is now considered as a standard practice. Reading comprehension is the process of constructing the meaning of reading by integrating essential facts that are important in the educational process and students' achievement in school. The purpose of this study is to gain an understanding of students' perceptions of teaching reading comprehension skills through the use of a conversation strategy provided via WhatsApp. The participants in this study are 35 students in the ninth grade at SMP Unggulan Al - Amin Cimahi. Depending on the results of the student questionnaire, the researcher concludes that students' reactions to the implementation of teaching reading comprehension of narrative texts using WhatsApp data are favorable, with a total of 78 percent of positive responses and 22 percent of negative responses to the questionnaire. Keywords:  Reading Comprehension, WhatsApp

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to assess the applicability of the eighth-grade English textbook “When English Rings a Bell” to the 2013 curriculum. This research employed a qualitative method known as document analysis. This textbook had eleven chapters, of which the researcher studied five. The researchers conducted the research instrument, and data were collected using the 2013 English textbook and curriculum outline. According to the findings, 16 of the book’s components, or 68.41 percent, are relevant, two are partially relevant with 17.40 percent, and three are irrelevant with 14.19 percent. Based on these data, the researchers concluded that the textbook appropriately addresses the topic’s objectives, linguistic characteristics, and social functions. Based on the data, it can be determined that the textbook covers 68.41 percent of the cognitive domain’s material relevancies and is capable of meeting the learning objectives, language aspects, and social functions of the ideal materials intended for the students. Keywords:  Content Analysis; Textbook; Cognitive Domain
