Abstract

This study aims at finding out the effect on essays presented as handwritten and as computer printed text on raters' scores and whether the length of the essays influences the scoring. Twenty one (21) sample essays were randomly selected and produced by students of English Study Program of Lampung University. The essays were presented in three different formats: handwritten, computer text in single space, and computer text in double space. This research applied one shot case study design and the data were analyzed using one way ANOVA. The result revealed that handwritten essays received higher scores than those in computer printed texts. The F-value was 5.5 while the F-table was 5.05 and the p value was 0.006. It revealed that there was statistically different mean on raters scores. It is suggested that the future researchers to analyze the causes of presentation effect on raters scores and to apply the more valid strategies to reduce the presentation effect.Keywords: assessment, essays, handwritten, computer text, mode of presentation, raters

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meneliti perbedaan pemahaman membaca antara siswa dengan kepribadian ekstrovert dan siswa dengan kepribadian introvert. Penelitian ini menerapkan desain penelitian Expost Facto atau penelitian Kriteria Kelompok. Subjek dari penelitian ini adalah 30 siswa SMAN 14 Bandar Lampung. Kuesioner dan tes membaca digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data. Data dianalisis dengan menggunakan independen T-test. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan secara statistik antara murid berkepribadian introvert dan murid berkepribadian extrovert dalam kemampuan membaca dengan level signifikansi 0.05. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa kepribadian berperan penting dalam kemampuan pemahaman membaca. Dengan demikian, siswa berkepribadian introvert menunjukkan hasil lebih baik dalam kemampuan membaca daripada siswa berkepribadian extrovert. The current research was aimed at investigating the differences of reading comprehension between the students with extrovert and introvert personalities. Those applied Expost Facto research design or Criterion Group Study. The subjects of this research were 30 students of SMAN 14 Bandar Lampung. Questionnaire and reading test were used to collect the data. The data were analyzed by using Independent T-Test. The results showed that there was a statistically significant difference of reading achievement between introvert and extrovert students in with the significant level 0.05. This suggests that personalities play important roles in reading comprehension achievement. That is, the students with introvert personality perform better in reading comprehension rather than the students with extrovert personality.  Keywords: extrovert, introvert, reading comprehension..

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan picture strip story dapat meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa dan mengetahui respon siswa setelah pengimplementasian dari picture strip story dalam pengajaran. Subjek penelitian terdiri dari 20 siswa di kelas X.4 di SMA Kartikatama Metro. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa teknik ini dapat meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara dan siswa juga memberikan respon positif pada teknik ini. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain penelitian one group pretest posttest. Terdapat dua penilai untuk menilai penampilan siswa. Repeated measure t-test digunakan untuk menganalisis data kuantitatif menggunakan SPSS (16.0). Hasil menyimpulkan bahwa adanya perbedaan kemampuan berbicara siswa secara signifikan pada level 0.05 karena t-ratio lebih besar dari t-table (10.865 2.093), kemampuan berbicara siswa meningkat setelah mereka diajarkan melalui teknik picture strip story, dan 90% siswa memberikan respon yang positif.The aims of this research were, to find out whether picture strip story can improve the students` speaking ability and to find out the students response after implementation of picture strip story in teaching speaking. The subject consist of 20 students in X.4 class of SMA Kartikatama Metro. The result showed that this technique can improve students` speaking ability and the students also give positive response to this technique. The study used one group pretest posttest design. There were two raters to judge the students` speaking performances. Repeated measure t-test was used to analyze the quantitative data and the hypothesis testing was computed using SPSS (16.0). The result concluded that there was a significant difference on level 0.05 because t-ration more than t-table (10.865 2.093), students` speaking ability was increase  after they was taught by using picture strip story technique, and 90% students gave positive response.Keywords : improvement, oral communication, picture strip story
