Abstract

Prematurity had a very high risk in mortality of infants. An infant born with a pregnancy period of less than 37 weeks and with a body weight corresponding to the gestation period is referred to as a premature or less months neonate. Premature infants often experience low body weight problems. Stimulation is needed to raise the body weight of premature infants. One of the non-invasive actions that encourage weight gain is massage therapy. According to the American Association of Massage Therapy (AMTA), massage is defined as the manipulation of soft tissue using hands or body to hold, move, or apply stress manually. The research focused on knowing the influence of massage therapy on the body weight of premature infants in Dr. M. Djamil Padang. The study was conducted from March to April 2012 on 18 stable premature infants. This research used a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest measurement. It was done by recording the body weight of the infants before and after massage therapy was applied for 5 days. A dependent T-Test (paired t-test) was used for statistical analysis. The statistical test results with bivariate analysis showed that there was a significant change in body weight (p = 0.000). This indicates that massage therapy significantly affects the increase in the body weight of premature infants.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of deep breathing relaxation techniques and massage on reducing pain in post-appendectomy patients in the Surgical Room at Dr. M. Zein Painan Hospital. This research uses a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest design with a control group. The sampling technique is purposive sampling with a sample of 20 people. Data collection is done by using a verbal description scale (verbal descriptor scale) for the pain scale. Data analysis is done with a paired t-test to assess the differences before and after the intervention in each group and the Mann-Whitney test to assess differences between groups. The results of this study indicate that the average pain level difference in the control group pretest-posttest is 2.30, and the average difference in the pain level in the experimental group before and after deep breathing relaxation techniques and massage is 3.50. Results of statistical tests for the control and experimental groups show a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05). It is concluded that the technique of deep breathing and relaxation massage can reduce the pain scale in post-appendectomy clients. It is advisable to apply deep breathing relaxation techniques and massage as one of the non-pharmacological techniques to reduce pain in post-appendectomy clients.
