Abstract

Swearwords are natural part of our language. They are used as the most healing way to throw away some extra frustration or anger in a difficult situation. Anderson  lists  three  different  motives  for swearing:  psychological  motives, social motives and linguistic motives.  The primary aim in this research is to find out swearwords that are commonly used by Bengkulunese people and the most frequent motives behind them. There are 20 Bengkulunese people as the participants of this research who filled in questionnaire. The questionnaire contained a table which consisted of two columns. The first is the swearwords column and the second one is the circumstances of the occurred swearwords which must be filled in by the participants completely. Based on the swearwords gained from the participants, there are 43 swearwords that are generally used by them in their daily speaking activity. Some of them are still in Indonesian language version and some other swearwords are from Bengkulunese language version. For example the word “sialan” and “kurang ajar” are Indonesian languages that are still understood by those who are not Bengkulunese, while the word “sea’”, “bigal”, or “cuk mak” are based from Bengkulunese language.

In this study the researcher used a qualitative descriptive method by collecting data on all character conversations in “Split” movie. The data were analyzed based on Frued's theory of defence mechanism. Furthermore, the data were also anaylized by using Spradley's theory. There are three steps that must be taken in using this theory, namely domain analysis, taxonomic analysis and component analysis. The researcher found 8 Kevin’s egos that got involved in real dialogues in Split movie. They are childish, firm man, mother-like, effeminate person, firm and effeminate, cruel, cool man, and weak lady. The highest val ue of frequently emerging ego goes to childish. Based on observations during the study, students can explain the background of the problem they want to raise in their essay's argument, besides that the use of sentence structure is also quite well controlled by students. Furthermore, there are some transition signals as part of Cohesive Devices used by students in essay writing arguments in this study, starting with the most commonly used are and, but, because, however, so. Only a few use other transitions such as a result, on the other hand, although. According to Zemach and Rumisek (2015), the use of transitions is sufficient to meet the conditions for using transitions used in argumentation essays and / or cause and effect essays. However, students are still weak in writing essays coherently using cohesive devices especially in using transition signals. These constraints are caused by several things, among others, firstly students still cannot distinguish usage and place the transition signal in the sentence correctly. Second, students still cannot form the right argument by using the correct transition signal in the essay. Apart from that, students still try to express their ideas naturally in writing argumentation essays.
