Abstract

The image of an American man has come into an important discussion since the eighteenth century. The characters exposed in literary works and visual media have created the images what the American man is supposed to be like.  In fact, the concept of what the American should be like has been through some changes along with the historical records of The United States. This study used social construction theory to elaborate how the idea is constructed. The study found out the contribution of social, economic, cultural, and political aspects to the idea of what the American man is like.

Abstract

Both Carl Sandburg and Wiji Thukul are poets whose poems mostly deal with the lives and struggles of common people. Due to this similarity, comparative study is worth doing to dig out more deeply the similarities and the distinctions that may exist due to the different as well as similar social–historical experiences of the poets. The study results that both poets share a similar vision of common people. Both attempt to elevate the condition of common people. Yet the slightly different social-historical experiences enhance a small distinctive attitude. Sandburg tends to insert his admiration as well as pride of being common people in his poems while Wiji Thukul does not.

Abstract

Kampung Biru Arema is one of thematic tourist villages in the city of Malang which provides economic benefits to the residents. The potential development of Kampung Biru is also supported by its strategic location. However, people have difficulty in communicating with foreign tourists due to their limited English speaking competence. Related to this problem, the community service is aimed at improving the quality of human resources by providing foreign language training (English and Chinese). The training was given for two months (June - July 2019). The results showed an improvement in the trainees’ skills and confidence in communicating in English. In addition, the team also have completed writing a booklet that can be used as a reference whenever the residents have difficulties in communication practices with foreign tourists visiting Kampung Biru Arema Malang.
