Abstract

Study of symptom and disease severity of stem spotting disease on red dragon fruit (Hylocereus polyrhizus, L.) was conducted from December 2012 to February 2013 in Padang Pariaman, West Sumatera. Laboratory and screen house work were carried out at Solok Tropical Fruit Research Institute and microbiology laboratory of Biology Department at Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science, Andalas University, Padang. This study used direct observation method and the data was analyzed descriptively. Objectives of the research were to characterize and identify the causes of stem spotting disease symptom and then to measure disease incidence in production centers of dragon fruit in Padang Pariaman, West Sumatra. The result showed that percentage of stem spotting disease of dragon fruit was 99,5% while disease severity index of it was 2,2 (moderate severity). Disease symptoms were spotting/patches of brown to black round surrounded by yellow halo. The pathogen was identified as Colletotrichum gloeosporoides. Keywords: Dragon fruit, stem spotting, identification

Abstract

Red dragon fruit Hylocereus polyrhizus is the fruit with a high value in industry. However, since the past two years, the fruit is being attacked by some pathogens and cause severe disease in West Sumatra. One of the diseases is black rot disease. The purpose of the research was to characterize the symptoms and disease severity of the black disease stem rot on red dragon fruit. The research was conducted from December 2012 until February 2013 and was taken place at Solok Tropical Fruit Research Institute and Microbiology laboratory of Biology Department Faculty of Mathematic and Natural Science, Andalas University, Padang, West Sumatera. This study was using direct observation method and the data were analyzed descriptively. The result showed that the percentage of the black disease of stem rot of dragon fruit was 47.3 % while disease severity index of it was 1.22. The isolated pathogen on the black disease stem rot of dragon fruit were Fusarium sp. and Xanthomonas sp.Keywords: Dragon fruit, black rot disease, disease severity

Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine level of virulency of several Vegetative Compatibility Group (VCG) of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense (Foc) isolates against cv Ambon hijau. The study was conducted at the laboratory of plant diseases and screen house of Solok Tropical Fruit Research Institute from August 2012 to February 2013.The experiment was arranged in randomized block design with seven treatments and four replications, each treatment consisted of fiveplants. The treatments were the mixture of isolates FocVCG 01213/16, 0121, and 0124/5 andthe single. The results revealed that several VCG isolates of Foc grouped in race 1 and 4 inoculated in single or mixture caused the highest disease incidence with the percentage of wilt was 100%. The fastest incubation period of disease on cv Ambon hijau caused by isolate VCG 01213/16 (5.95days), followed by VCG (11.35 to 12 days), single isolate of VCG 0121 (13.15 days) and VCG 0124/5 (17.45 days). Keywords :banana, Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense, Vegetative Compatibility Group, inoculation

Abstract

The study about on the description of symptoms and disease severity of yellow disease stem rot of red dragon fruit (Hylocereus polyrhizus, L) in Padang Pariaman, West Sumatera has been was studied from December 2012 to February 2013. The study was conducted at the Laboratory of plant diseases and the screen house of Indonesian Tropical Fruit Research Institute Solok and Microbiology laboratory of Biology Department of Mathematic and Natural Science, Andalas University, Padang. The purpose of the study was to characterize and identify the symptoms of the yellow disease stem rot on dragon fruit. This study was used direct observation method and the data were analyzed descriptively. The result showed that percentage of yellow disease stem rot of dragon fruit in Padang Pariaman was 99,5% while disease severity index was 2,59 (moderate severity). The microbes found at the time of isolation were Fusarium sp., Pestalotiopsis sp., Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, Sclerotium sp., fungi (sp.1) and bacteria (sp. 1). The microbes that caused yellow disease stem rot of red dragon fruit which was investigated by using postulate Koch test was Fusarium sp.Key words: Symptoms, disease severity, yellow disease stem rot, identification

Abstract

One of prospective banana collections at Indonesian Tropical Fruits Research Institute is Ambon kuning (Gros michel) origins from Jambi. The aim of the study was to find out the response of Ambon kuning to some Vegetative Compatibility Groups (VCGs) of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense. The research was conducted from November 2012 to February 2013 in the laboratory of plant disease and the screen house of Indonesian Tropical Fruits Research Institute of Solok. The treatment used a Randomized Block Design (RBD) with 6 treatments and 4 replications, each treatment consisted of 5 plants. Treatments were 6 isolates of Foc VCGs 01213/16, 0121, 01219, 0123, 0124/5, 0120/15, those were the Indonesian Tropical Fruits Research Institutes collection. The parameters observed were percentage of plants infected, the incubation period, index of diseases severity on leaves and corm. Data was analyzed by analysis of variance. The results showed that Ambon kuning (Gros Michelcv) was resistant to Foc VCG 01219 and VCG 0120, moderately resistant to Foc VCG 0123, susceptible to Foc VCG 0121 and VCG 0124/5, and highly susceptible to Foc VCG 01213/16 Keywords: banana, resistance variety, Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense, Vegetative Compatibility Group (VCG)
