Abstract

This study aims to respond the regulation of teaching and learning English in higher education. Since there is no clear regulation of what supposed to be taught, some institutions decide different requirement for the teaching and learning English. This study focused on analyzing and evaluating the students’ actual needs in learning English. A quantitative study was conducted toward 113 non-English department students who have taken English subject in an Islamic University in Jambi. This study explored both of the students’ actual needs and experiences of their learning English in the classroom. The results indicate that having the four skills as a part of teaching and learning English in the classroom is important for the students. The students also mentioned that completing their study is not the only reason to learn English. They believe that learning English is a golden key to be a part of world class community. In spite of mastering reading as the main focus of learning process, the students still face difficulties in understanding the ideas in English since they have limited vocabulary and grammar. They also stated that it is hard for them to get the meaning of what they read because they do not know how the sentences are put together. As the results, it is suggested that the process of teaching and learning English must be revisited

Abstract

Kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat dengan tema “Pelatihan Persiapan Pembelajaran Online Berbasis Edmodo” ini merupakan kegiatan kolaborasi antara beberapa dosen Prodi Tadris Bahasa Inggris UIN Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi dengan mahasiwa prodi yang dilaksanakan sebagai satu bentuk tindak lanjut kerjasama antara Prodi Tadris Bahasa Inggris Fakultas Tarbiyah dan Keguruan UIN Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi dengan SMAN 12 Kota Jambi. Kegiatan utama dalam program pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini ialah pelatihan pemanfaatan aplikasi Edmodo yang dapat digunakan sebagai media guru memberikan materi maupun membuat kuis atau ulangan bagi siswa secara interaktif sehingga menarik minat siswa. Sejumlah 60 guru mengikuti pelatihan interaktif ini. Pada akhir kegiatan ditemukan guru-guru memiliki persepsi yang positif terhadap kegiatan yang diberikan. Sebanyak 73% guru-guru yang mengikuti pelatihan menyampaikan bahwa kegiatan pengabdian yang dilaksanakan memberikan sesuai dengan kebutuhan peserta.

Abstract

Seiring perkembangan Zaman, tuntutan untuk memiliki keterampilan berbahasa Inggris semakin meningkat. Meskipun demikian motivasi siswa dalam belajar Bahasa Inggris masih dirasa kurang. Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat (PKM) ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan motivasi belajar Bahasa Inggris Pada Pondok Pesantren (Ponpes) Ainul Yaqin kota Jambi. Meski siswa-siswi pada Ponpes ini berada pada tingkatan sekolah yang sejajar tingkatan SMP ataupun MTs, peningkatan keterampilan berbahasa Inggris setingkat Usia Dini masih sangat diperlukan. Dengan pertimbangan tersebut, tim PKM melakukan kegiatan untuk meningkatan motivasi dalam belajar Bahasa Inggris. Kegitan ini melibatkan 60 Siswa siswi Ponpes yang terbagi menjadi 4 rombongan belajar. Tim menerapkan pendekatan komunikatif dengan varisi kegiatan. Hasil PKM menunjukkan dampak positif terhadap motivasi belajar siswa. Hal ini terlihat dari aktifnya siswa siswi ponpes terlibat dalam kegiatan pembelajaran dikelas

Abstract

This article describes the activities of implementing the CEFR-based communicative language approach at the junior high school level. There are 16 students involved and are at the level of Movers A1 and Flyers A2 based on the CEFR concept. The main purpose of this activity is to provide an English learning experience that is different from what is applied in schools. This activity avoids the use of grammatical theory based and prioritizes oral communication activities that connect students with the real environment. Activities using media that are already available in the learning environment of students and learning topics are designed according to the needs of students. The activity is very structured and involves five aspects of assessment, namely Range of Vocabulary, Accuracy, Fluency, Interaction, and Coherence.

Abstract

This service is a form of the English Education Study Program in carrying out the tridharma tasks of higher education. The aim of this service is to provide assistance and training to English teachers who are members of the MGMP Rayon 5 community in Jambi City. This activity consists of several meetings specifically with the aim of providing teachers with the opportunity to receive guidance on writing research articles for publication in journals. As a result of this activity, the teachers felt very helpful in writing research articles and they had several articles ready to be submitted to journals. In the future, the study program wants to carry out activities with an international reputation journal orientation.

Abstract

This community service program, conducted for teachers of the PGRI Association in Sabak Timur Subdistrict, Tanjung Jabung Timur Regency, aimed to enhance their language proficiency in writing research articles, particularly in English. Using the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach, the program focused on leveraging the community's existing potential and resources to address common challenges faced by teachers, such as mastering basic grammar, selecting appropriate vocabulary, and understanding scientific writing structures. The activities included intensive training sessions, workshops, and individual consultations, covering aspects like grammar, sentence construction, vocabulary enrichment, and the development of a clear and concise academic writing style. Teachers were also guided through the structure and format of scientific articles, enabling them to produce well-organized drafts. The program's outcomes included a collection of draft articles ready for submission and improved confidence among participants in contributing to academic publications. This initiative successfully empowered teachers to elevate their research writing skills, fostering a culture of academic excellence and innovation within their community.
