Abstract

Background: Aloe vera contains active components such as antrhaquinones, saponin, glucomannans, and acemannans that have been known for its antimicrobial properties. In vitro study showed that Aloe vera extract can inhibit the growth of Streptococcus mutans. Studies reported that children with caries have high level of salivary S. mutans which is the main pathogen in dental caries. The gold standard mouthrinse for dental caries is chlorhexidine gluconate, but it has several side effects. The objective of this study was to compare the effect between Aloe vera juice and 0.06% chlorhexidine mouth rinse on salivary S. mutans in children with caries. Methods: This experimental research with pretest and post-test control group design conducted on 30 children (6-12 years old) with number of carious teeth >4. Subjects divided into 2 groups: Aloe vera juice group and 0.06% chlorhexidine group, which instructed to rinse their mouth with 10 ml stated mouthwash, twice a day, during 7-day period. Unstimulated saliva was collected at baseline and after 7 days then inoculated on mitis salivarius bacitracin agar. S. mutans were counted and expressed in CFU/ml. Data were analyzed using paired t-test and independent t-test.Result: The result showed that a significant reduction in salivary S.mutanscounts was observed with Aloe vera juice mouth rinse and 0.06% chlorhexidine (p<0.05). The mean reduction of S. mutans counts was not statistically significantly between grup (p>0.05).Conclusion: These findings suggest that Aloe vera juice can reduce salivary S. mutans in children with caries so it can be considered as alternative mouthwash to prevent caries.

Abstract

Plasticizer is the content of the soft liner (with soft acrylic polymer (poly ethylmethacrylate)) or denture tissue conditioner material that maintains the soft said material. However, it will release as a result of the saliva or water solution being absorbed that could be effected on the acrylic soft liner physical properties such as a hardness. Selection of the denture cleanser is very important to minimize its impact, which is the traditional plant cinnamon (Cinnamomum burmani) can be used as an alternative of natural denture cleansure agents besides alkaline peroxide chemicals used frequently. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of different denture cleansers on hardness of acrylic soft liner. Method: Eighteen cylindrical acrylic soft liner samples (15mm x 10 mm (ASTM: D-2240 64T)) were divided into 3 groups : group I aquadest immersion, group II alkaline peroxide immersion and group III cinnamon immersion. The measurement of acrylic soft liner hardness was done using Shore A hardness D2240 after 7 days of immersion. The results were submitted to one-way ANOVA and post hoc Bonferroni. Results: The highest average of acrylic soft liner hardness was shown by alkaline peroxide immersion group followed by cinnamon immersion group and aquadest immersion group sequentially. There was a significant difference between all groups (p<0.05). Conclusion: There was effect of different denture cleansers on hardness of acrylic soft liner. Keywords: soft liner, denture cleanser, cinnamon

Abstract

Digital photo analysis is an alternative method of measuring the vertical dimension occlusion (OVD) in the denture processing by using graphic design softwares such as bitmap and vector-based software. The 2020 version of bitmap software has advantages such as online data storage, and upsampling feature that is used to improve image quality as well as the 2020 version of vector software. This study aimed to compare the results of OVD measurements using the analysis of several versions of digital photo softwares and direct measurements (Willis method). Methods: This study was an analytic observational study with a cross-sectional approach. The total sample in this study was 30 students of the Sriwijaya University Dentistry Study Program from previous studies, divided into 5 groups; group I Willis method, group II 2012 version of bitmap, group III 2012 version of vector, group IV 2020 version of  bitmap, group V 2020 version of vector software. The OVD was measured from subnation to menton in occlusion using the Willis method and several digital photo software analysis methods. The data were tested using one-way ANOVA test. Results: The results of the one-way ANOVA test showed OVD differences of the direct method and digital photo software methods were not significant (p>0.05). Conclusion: There was no difference in the results of the occlusal vertical dimension between the groups.

Abstract

Bond strength of tissue conditioner (temporary soft denture liner material ) on an acrylic denture base could be affected on the adhesion between these two materials by water solution such as chemical denture cleanser. Cinnamaldehyde contained in cinnamon plant extract (Cinnamomum burmani) is one of the natural agents that can be recommended as a denture cleanser and expected to have a smaller impact on  the mechanical properties of material. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of immersion time in plant extract denture cleanser containing cinnamaldehyde on the bond strength of tissue conditioner to acrylic resin. Method: Twenty four rectangular acrylic soft denture liner samples (64 mm x 10 mm x 2,5 mm (ISO 1567:1988)) were divided into 4 groups : group I and II, 1.5 % cinnamon extract  immersions (for 7 days and 14 days); group III and IV, aquadest immersions (for 7 days and 14 days). The measurements of samples’s bond strength were done using the Universal Testing Machine on the last day of each group after immersion. The results were submitted to one-way ANOVA and post hoc Bonferroni. Results: There was a significant difference between all groups (p<0.05). The highest average of sample’s bond strength was shown by group III and IV followed by group I and II, respectively. Conclusion: There was effect of immersion time in cinnamon extract denture cleanser on the bond strength of tissue conditioner to acrylic resin
